SUGABABES- FREAK LIKE ME- NON NUMBER ONE

http://cdn.hmvdigital.com/static/img/sleeveart/00/000/942/0000094241_500.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 3

Let the hate mail commence but I'm afraid the truth is the Sugababes were always a prime candiate for relegation here. In the 7 chart weeks starting the week before this was released the Sugababes victory on 4th May 2002 was by far both the smallest winning margin (just over 1k) and the lowest weekly sale by a No 1 hit through that period. By the time this climbed to No 3 on this version of the chart one of those ahead of it was actually S Club Juniors!

Get The Party Started didn't make it then! I can't see any promotion happening in 2002 now. How close were the sales between it and George Harrison, out of interest?

Shame to see two of the few decent #1s in 2002 both gone, but Aaliyah was extremely obvious and Sugababes always had the risk. I think Round Round should be okay though - in the usual summer slump it was far from the weakest chart topper in that period. It's Blazin' Squad who should be getting ready to feel the axe there. :D

So I guess it now goes four weeks for Will, five weeks for Gareth, Oasis getting to #1 a week later (in place of Sugababes) and then Holly Valance going to #1 as normal?

So many questions Superbossanova!

The answers-

1) 2k behind

2) There are 5 demotions still to happen in 2002

3) You'll have to wait until Sunday to see the full list! :D

Only the first of those was actually a question to you! The last bit was more like me questioning myself. And I fail to see the question I asked to get the second answer. :D

And I've just realised, it's probably SIX weeks for Gareth as he'd eat into Will's last official week with his ~800k opening sale. Deary me. :drama:

More than a Woman is amazing and the second best number 1 of the decade behind All the Things She Said.

BLAZIN SQUAD- CROSSROADS- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/54/Blazin-Squad-Crossroads-304876.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

Yes as predicted the fact that Blazin Squad topped the charts in 2002 with a poor first week sale coupled with a decline of 1-2-4 means that it's goodbye Blazin Squad from their No 1 status on this thread, partly also due to the fantastic first week sale of Atomic Kitten who exploded out of the stalls with a sale of 144k almost three times that of the boys.

When Blazin' Squad went to no. 1 with 'Crossroads' it was like the UK charts had suffered a severe heart attack. You can imagine what I thought when 3 Of A Kind 'Babycakes' topped the UK charts just over 2 years later. Death was so close!!! Luckily the charts recovered and UK record companies realised the error of their ways and actually started to sign artists with that beautiful thing I call "talent". :D

PINK- JUST LIKE A PILL- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bf/JustLikeAPillsingle.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

Consigned to the runner up spot thanks to a mighty debut by Will Young & Gareth Gates (who collectively stood NO chance of getting demoted with any of their 2002 chart toppers), Pink loses her first No 1 single. It's first week sales of 49k were no match for the 132k recorded by Will & Gareth and so was defeated before the battle really started. She came much closer, as we know, with "Get The Party Started" than she does here, perhaps 2008 will be kinder to her?

"Just Like A Pill" is great but it was very lucky to get to #1.

The true classic of the latter parts of 2002 (well, in terms of the #1s at least) should be able to hold on here, good job it didn't come a week later though.

I actually didn't think 'Just Like A Pill' would be a UK #1 at all. That same week a much more dreadful song was released - namely 'That's What I Go To School For' by Busted which I was convinced would be a chart topper. Luckily for me, Pink managed to get the no. 1 with a much more superior single. :D

LAS KETCHUP- THE KETCHUP SONG (ASERJE)- NON NUMBER ONE

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/cb/Las_ketchup.jpg

NEW PEAK POSITION: 2

A fortnight at No 2 is the best this song can muster on this thread, perhaps another surprise demotion, and probably unfairly considering how much it sold in total and how long it stayed on the charts. Its respectable opening week tally was still a 100k less than Nelly & Kelly Rowland who they get stuck behind on this chart.

Overall I'm glad this never happened, a lot more good records (for my tastes) here seem to get demoted and some terrible number ones get promoted or prolonged stays at the top.
The Ketchup Song can rot in hell for bastardising Rapper's Delight. Other than that, it's not too bad.

I thought we'd lose Just Like A Pill here which is a shame. She shouldn't get demoted for So What in 2008 given the fact it was top for 3 weeks which would guarantee her at least one week with this system. But JLAP was such an odd no.1. I loved it at the time but it came as a surprise no.1 as I thought the fight was between Busted and Eminem that week. Glad that Pink got no.1 for my 14th birthday though.

I wonder if there'll be any promotions in 2002? I can only think that Cheeky Girls might be a contender.

All of the "non-#1s" on this page are still very well-known today tbh. Especially Just Like a Pill, Heart FM play that all the time still.
I'll finish 2002 tomorrow- 2 more demotions to happen!

I predict

Westlife 'Unbreakable' and Blue/Elton John 'Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word'

but I don't know the exact sales for them so I may be wrong. I think I've got at least one of them right due to what came out the week after.

And if Tomcraft's Loneliness becomes a non-#1 I will not be a happy bunny :arrr:

NO! Genuinely one of my favourite songs ever, but I only began to fully appreciate it last year when some Spaniards came to my school and at any mention would begin to sing/dance to it

Hopefully "Sound of the Underground" will remain débuting at #1, could it possibly get five weeks at #1?! :o :D
