As much as she appreciates her fans, she needs to stop taking their advice... "Marilyn Monroe" was a fine choice.
Yeah it's generic but it has a certain appeal to it I think. It's much more feel good and feels less basic than those two songs you mentioned. Her raps in it are really good too. I'm happy it's the next single anyway, was always my favourite on the album.

Pound the Alarm is a LOT more generic than Back in Time, sorry. And I'd say it's more generic than Whsitle. Whistle is closer to hip hop than anything Nicki Minaj will dare to release here.

Yes, Nicki's raps are better, but the song as a whole is generic as. It's Taio Cruz stuff. Pitbull's song samples a track from the 1950's for starters.

It's sad that Nicki and her label wont release anything from the hip-hop side of her album in the UK i would like to see Champion released in the UK but that will never happen, still i dont blame Nicki unless you're Eminem the chances that you will chart in good position with a rap song is unlikely

Don't Go by Wretch 32 managed to go to #1, so if that song can get to #1, I'm sure Nicki can get any of the hip hop songs on her album top 20.

If she rapped on the instrumental to Heart Skips a Beat, E.T., Right There, Read All About It, Champion or Just Can't Get Enough (the first half obv), those would've all passed as hip hop songs, and would've been massive hits and probably got to #1 (both UK and US) if they were released in place of Starships, with the hype Nicki had around her at the time.

But I agree. Her record label probably won't let her release any hip hop songs. It's a shame though, as the Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded album era is honestly turning out to be the most boring hip hop eras in years. I really like the album, but it feels like nothing has happened, and the album came out ages ago. I thought it would be massive and go down in history like Watch the Throne or something at first. :(

She is having a huge bust up in the US at the moment with the New York radio station Hot 97, she was meant to be headlining thier festival but before she came out the host of the radio station claimed that Starships is garbage and pop , i love Nicki so most songs she releases i will support but she should release more hip-hop again :(

She could've easily released 'Right By My Side' fully and made it a bigger hit than it is. I think 'Champion' is the only one left on the hip hop side that would be a Top 20 hit though. 'Sex In The Lounge' and 'Roman's Holiday' too at a push.
Should have been 'Automatic' or 'Va Va Voom'. :smoke:

Personally, I think the strategy they're doing is working fine: hip hop for the Urban audience in the US and pop singles for the pop radio there and rest of the world. Because when had Nicki actually had a big hit with a rap song outside the US?

Of course we can always discuss the pop single choices but PTA is very good for summer and Marilyn Monroe/Va Va Voom for autumn.. Although the latter appears only on deluxe version so there's a chance it might never get a single treatment because it's not on all versions

Gonna see her show tomorrow! Lots of bad lip syncing and colours

Super Bass, Fly, Girls Fall Like Dominoes and Moment 4 Life were all big hits here.

If Nicki is going to continue for the rest of her career only releasing pop songs, then she needs to leave Young Money imo, and just admit that she's not a hip hop artist anymore.

Va Va Voom MUST be a single.

A video has already been filmed for it

I don't understand it. It was originally the lead single. They chose 'Starships' instead and that was VERY last minute. Like literally a few days before 'Va Va Voom' was supposed to be released. But then they decided to relegate it from the main album to bonus tracks. Odd...

If being popular, well-liked and successful makes you "not hip hop", I'd rather her not be "hip hop" - Nicki Minaj

I'd never call Super Bass a hip hop/rap single but the other two, yes.

I disagree there. Hip hop is very popular, and has been for decades. Whether a song is hip hop is based on it's instrumental more than anything. Nicki's biggest chart hits in the UK have been Super Bass, Starships, Where Them Girls At and Turn Me On, so at this stage I can't really call her a hip hop artist (only Super Bass you could get away with).

I'm very liberal with what I consider to be hip hop aswell. You can see me in other threads saying songs like R.I.P, Talk That Talk, E.T., etc. are hip hop. So it's hardly like I'm one of those people that is really strict with this sort of thing. Just Nicki can't get an urban hit for whatever reason, and I think it's getting ridiculous now. She's not even trying. Even Britney Spears could have hits with urban songs.

How is Nicki Minaj NOT a Hip Hop artist Eric.. :o. Sure she makes some pop songs but her roots are from Hip Hop.

amen!

I know I always say this but it annoys me when a good song gets dismissed just because it's 'generic'. it may not be too different too 'starships', but it's a GOOD SONG and is perfect for the summer which I assume is coming up. she can release one of the hip-hop songs LATER.

She's not going to release any of the hip hop songs. It's clear at this stage. All her new Twitter fans won't let her release one ever again now.

And no offense, but I probably like (and know) much more of Nicki's discography than most of you do.

I'm actually quite confused really. Most of you don't like any other hip hop artists, and most of you don't like those artists like Pitbull, Taio Cruz, Usher, etc. so why on earth do you like Nicki?

I always imagined Nicki would be releasing songs like these:

But instead we've just got all these Taio Cruz-esque songs.
