Just because I love her pop stuff doesn't mean I don't love her hip hop stuff, don't be ridiculous! I adore 'Moment 4 Life', 'Beez In The Trap', 'Stupid Hoe', 'Champion', 'Roman's Revenge', 'Did It On Em', 'Here I Am' and countless others. She's great at doing both, and the quality is far better than any old ropey Taio Cruz song. I can just appreciate a song if it's GOOD and 'Pound The Alarm' is, is it generic? Of course it is, doesn't stop me from loving it as it's got great production, Nicki has great rhythm and it's very feel good.

Starships, for one, sounds like an exact clone of Dynamite. The production on it seems to be trying it's absolute hardest to copy Dr. Luke's production style, but failing. I admit, Dr. Luke is a good producer though, but he has better songs she could try and copy. I dislike Taio Cruz's songs for the same reason that I don't like Pound the Alarm, but I can't really understand how you'd like one and not the other. Taio Cruz has better beats than that, and he's better at singing than Nicki is.

If you seriously do like Beez in the Trap and Champion and all those songs, there's many other artists out there who do songs like that. They may not wear colourful wigs all the time, but the music is the same. :D

Anyone can feel free to bump this thread in the future and embarrass me if Nicki releases a hip hop song and it goes top 10 though. Although chances are the embarrassment would be outweighed by my happiness for Nicki's success at that point.

Sorry to burst in and go completely off topic but God, Fergalicious is still as amazing as ever.

You don't have to patronise me, I do like hip hop music as well! :P Just Nicki is one of my favourite artists as of now. I love Drake's stuff, I used to be a huge Missy and Eve fan and I love the occasional song by Eminem and Lil Wayne too.

I do like some of Taio's songs, but that's neither here or there, the lyrics are laughable for his songs and he doesn't have much of a personality. Shame as I loved his earlier stuff in 'I Can Be', 'Come On Girl' and 'Movin' On' but everything since has been mostly dreadful. But that's for another discussion.

I love Nicki, her mixtapes were awesome but i understand why people like her pop stuff, in my opinion some of her pop music is great for example her first verse on Pound The Alarm is bloody awesome she makes feel good music and i would say the quality is better than Taio Cruz, she is creating a huge buzz in the UK right now and who knows she might release hip-hop in the future but why should she do it now when she is having so much success, Starships has sold over 600k in the UK so i dont think her label is complaining

I'm with Jack here, I don't really care if it's generic when the songs are as good as Pound The Alarm, Whip It and Starships, I know it's double standards to criticise Taio but his stuff since 'going American' is awful aside from Break Your Heart, Higher and Dirty Picture.

I really like hip-hop as a genre too and tbh I do sort of miss mixtape Nicki but I prefer pop Nicki now. Plus I think she did a good job at pleasing everyone with a half and half album, she could've done a wholly generic pop album and ditched her roots completely, but she didn't. Admittedly it's a little questionable releasing two generic bangers in a row as singles, but why ignore obvious hits? Plus it's summer so anything other than PTA or WI (maybe Va Va Voom) wouldn't work anyway.

It's VERY questionable to release two generic bangers in a row as singles. Even Rihanna has never done that before.

But you don't really have to worry with Rihanna. She's only got two dance-pop songs on her album, so she can't release two in a row really. But with Nicki I had a feeling for a long time it would happen.

Azealia Banks has recently come out with a statement saying that she's NOT a hip hop artist (she's probably seen the enourmous backlash that Nicki is getting), which is a good move for her career, as she can now release an album of dance songs and not let anybody down.

I think Nicki should do the same. I think she honestly wants to do dance-pop to be honest. Nicki likes getting chart hits, and the only songs from this album she ever talks about, or seems to care about are the dance-pop ones. And most of her fanbase now consists of people who discovered her in 2011 and like pop music. So I think she should do her next album of all dance-pop, and move to Interscope if she can. She's trying to juggle the two at the same time and failing miserably, and she clearly doesn't want to do hip hop anymore.

Don't go to see her tour even if you love her. I adore her stuff but one hour (no encore so 55 minutes) of pointless medleys and very bad tour production is not worth the money.

I'm a big fan of Nicki Minaj, have been since she released 'Your Love' way back in 2010. Saying that, 'Pound the Alarm' is just awful. Admittedly at first I thought 'Starships'' instrumental was very 'in your face' and irritating, but 'Pound the Alarm''s is just an insult to music production. The selection of it as the next track is purely a selfish one by that of the fans, though I think single #3 will struggle enormously - especially if she takes the pop-route again; her credibility of a rapper has been in decline since 'Turn Me On'/'Starships' - this'll just push it over the edge.

The thing with Nicki though is she clearly has 2 seperate fan bases, the Hip Hop fan base who have been with her from the beginning, well before she made it mainstream, and the Pop fan base who have only discovered her in the past 18 months or so, which I'm guessing is why she made a half Hip Hop, half Pop album, to keep everyone happy. I myself would rather have a Nicki album full of tracks like Beez In The Trap, over an album full of dance RedOne bangers, only because I think she does Hip Hop better then anyone else does right now, and those type of tracks are the reason I fell in love with her in the first place, (also because I think others can do the dance bangers much better than Nicki).

Eric, you're going on about Nicki never having a Hip Hop top 10 or whatever, but in the UK who the hell does nowadays? Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Tyga, Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa and Drake have all had massive hits in the States recently, all of which failed to set the UK chart alight. Yes, Nicki Minaj is a much bigger name than most of those, but that alone wont make the radio stations play a Hip Hop track where every second word is a swear word. Speaking of America, if she does ever do a full Pop/Dance album, there's half her US fanbase lost already, and she knows that.

I say stick with half Hip Hop, half Pop albums, or release 2 seperate albums in the same year, a Hip Hop album and a Pop album. Simple.

Pound The Alarm is an AMAZING song, but as a single, right after Starships? I'm not 100% sure about that one. It's not really any sort of progression from Starships; I think she would have been much better releasing Marylin Monroe or something else from the album and releasing PTA in a few singles' time. However catchy and loveable these dance songs may be, anyone could do them, and I think Nicki really thrives when she is doing something that only she can do. Her recent songs are good, but really don't compare to most of her first album.

The Nicki I really love is pop Nicki, songs like I'm The Best, Your Love and Super Bass (the latter is in my Top 10 favourite songs ever). I liked it when she rapped as well as sung, because I'm not really a fan of proper, dirty rap songs, so rapping over a pop beat really appealed to me. She used to have something special and unique about her, but PF:RR just made her sound generic and faceless. I'm worried that its success will only mean she will never return to the way she used to be.

Didnt want this as the next single but it is going to be huge, the radio's are jumping on it already its Scott Mills next big thing on Radio 1, Choice FM has play listed it and no doubt Capital FM will soon, i think it is a potential #1.
If Starships and Turn Me On couldn't make it how could this? Not saying it won't go top 5 but #1, no.

Starships made it to #2 with less hype around it, now she has a couple of big festivals like Wireless, V festival and she's headlining Radio 1 big weekend, hopefully she releases the video on time as well, that should help it.

So it'sofficially the single?

This song is EVERYTHING that I've come to hate about Nicki Minaj. Its alright faceless blah music. I can't even find the right words to describe it. 'Beez in the Trap' is GREAT though. Why doesn't she do more stuff like that? Where is "Hairdresser from milan that the MONSTER DO" Nicki? Sad timez.

I thought she could be as good as the QUEEN but evidently not. *Plays 'How Many Licks' and remembers when hip hop used to be GOOD*

She has to release this music if she wants any chart success. I prefer 'Beez In The Trap' etc. though!
