Kadie Elder to represent Persephonia at BJSC LIV

For the 54th edition of the BuzzJack Song Contest (Persephonia's 33rd contest), we will be represented by Danish band Kadie Elder (a male group rather than the female solo artist that name may suggest) with 'Simple Guy'.

We are hoping the song will deliver us a seventh qualifier in a row following our major success last contest.

The contest is being held in #00274E following their win last contest.

Kadie Elder are the first Danish act to represent Persephonia, the eighth different nationality that we've sent. The majority of our entries have been by either UK (14, including one joint UK-Austrian) or US (11) acts. Sweden and Canada have both represented us twice while Australia, Iceland, Norway and now Denmark have each been sent once.

Kadie Elder bring Persephonia back down to Earth with a DNQ

After six straight contests of qualifications, Persephonia's streak of good luck is over as Kadie Elder fail to qualify.

A contrast from last month where we scored our biggest hit ever, 'Simple Guy' came 24th (2nd last) in the second semi-final of BJSC LIV in #00274E, scoring 21 points from seven countries (N DNTN, #00274E themselves, D'yermak'er, Terra Avium, Espen, Lake Thermwoods and Umiiruka, who gave the highest score of 6 points).

It's the worst performance for Persephonia since The 2 Bears' 'Bear Hug' finished dead last in its semi (also 24th) with just twelve points way back in BJSC XXXVI. The Wonder Villains' 'Zola' also only scored 21 points in its semi-final in BJSC XLI however this was with a deduction for Persephonia failing to vote.

Carellis Maps produces updates political map of the BJSC world

In light of some changes in Persephonia's diplomatic relations, Carellis Maps have issued an updated version of the political map of the BJSC World.

Notably, the Union of Jubirdia has been extended to include three new full members - Aeroche, D'yermak'er and Sandénia - and a new category has been added for co-signatories of the Shadeux Pact which has significantly strengthened Persephonian relations with a number of other nations, most notably Batidas and Budtar. Aeroche are in both categories as both a Jubirdia member and a Shadeux Pact signatory.

The map now includes the recently discovered new continent of Defunctia, though Persephonia has not established official relations with the vast majority of the sparsely populated continent.

Scruvovnia has been reclassified and is no longer an official Enemy of the State. Relations between Persephonia and Scruvovnia are steadily improving but still remain somewhat strained.

Skall win BJSC LIV

In other news, the winner of BJSC LIV in #00274E is Skall. The nation win for the first time in their history on their 29th attempt. They've come 2nd twice in the past. The winning song is 'Supreme' by Postiljonen, which took the win home with 174 points.

It was a good month for the Union of Jubirdia with 4 members making the top 10 and a fifth just outside - Hendinia came second with 'Epilogue: I & II - Shadow Of The Sun' by Taped Rai; Aquafina were 5th with 'Glowing' by Nikki Williams; Séyetana were 6th with 'Amaranthine' by Amaranthe; Bignia-Zaragovina finished 7th with Katy Tiz's 'Red Cup'; D'yermak'er just missed out on a second top 10 as 'Hustler' by Josef Salvat came 11th. Aeroche came 20th with Massive Attack's 'Paradise Circus', but Sandénia and Bellamia made up 2 of the bottom 3 - Ida's 'Underdog' came 30th and Alyssa Reid's 'Running Guns' 31st respectively.

Skall, Caerfyrddia, Yehesi, Terra Avium and Sandénia (a debutant) all scored personal bests. Caerfyrddia made the top 5 for the first time with 'So Close' by Ólafur Arnalds feat. Arnór Dan coming 4th, aided by 12 points from Persephonia. Yehesi improved on their #20 debut wiuth a 12th place finish for 'Tonight' by Galavant. Terra Avium finished above the bottom 2 for the first time in their fifth final appearance, coming 21st with Kissy Sell Out's 'Gimme Sin' (feat. Saint Saviour).

Kopečka made a strong comeback, coming 9th with Minnie-Oh's 'Step Up'. Fljótavík made a record-breaking regression from 3rd in the semi-final to 25th in the final with 'Fantasy' by Juveniles. Allecian's first entry under the new name of Scruvovnia performed poorly, Kentö's 'Complicated' finishing 28th.

The wooden spoon award went by some distance to Sandebörg's entry 'The World Is A Dancefloor' by Artymove. The song scored just 24 points, less than half the points 31st received and the lowest score in a final since BJSC XLIV when Greenfroze entry 'Bullets' by Janine And The Mixtape scored 19. Artymove benefited from auto-qualifying to the final thanks to Sandebörg's success last contest.

Yeah 'Be With You' is definitely one of your best entries, shame it DNQed especially after your monstrosity last contest.

MAASAI going for gold (or whatever metal represents 22nd place)

Persephonia's 34th entry to the BuzzJack Song Contest is from Swedish duo MAASAI. The song, 'Memories', is a return to female vocals after 2 male-vocalled entries and a return to the Swedish nationality which has represented Persephonia twice, both times coming exactly 22nd (Savage Skulls and Douster's 'Bad Gal' (feat. Robyn) and Karin Park's 'Restless').

The Persephonian BJSC committee is simply hoping to return to the final after a crushing DNQ last contest and it's definitely not a cheap ploy to do well because Swedish acts have won the last five contests. (note: this is only partially sarcastic, I haven't actually sent a Swedish act for the sake of sending a Swedish act)

You can listen to the track below if you so wish.

MAASAI DNQs

After a run of good fortune Persephonia seem to be firmly back on flopping form as MAASAI's 'Memories' provides us a second straight DNQ in BJSC LV, hosted in Skall.

Nonetheless, Persephonia is looking forward to the next contest. President Salim Zosimus would like to send out a message to all other countries:

'PERSEPHONIA LVI: BE AFRAID.'

UPDATE: MAASAI came 18th in semi-final 2, receiving 46 points from 11 different countries. The biggest supporter was Isconia (who gave 'Memories' 8 points), while points were also received from Batidas, Kylienips (6 each), FNT Nickodonia, N DNTN, Utopia (5 each), Kluminican Republic (4), Mdiče, PRoJ, Umiiruka (2 each) and Terra Avium (1). Big thanks to all those countries.

Caerfyrddia win BJSC for the first time in Skall

Following last month's debut win for Skall, there's another debut win in BJSC LV, this time for Caerfyrddia. They set a personal record of 4th place last month but that record only stood for a single contest as Marcel Woods' 'Bring It Back' (feat. Vanbot) blasted to the win with 168 points.

That was a 20 point lead - Aeroche had to play 2nd fiddle, their first top 10 hit that didn't win, with 'Cold Nights' by Chordashian totalling 148 points, while Mdiče made a long overdue return to the top 10 after 10 misses, coming 3rd with 142 points with Young Galaxy's 'Fall For You'. Syndare (ASTR's 'Operate', 6th) and Umiiruka (Bebe Black's 'Never Forget', 10th) also made returns to the top 10 after 11 and 7 misses respectively.

Aside from Aeroche and Umiiruka, 2 other Jubirdia members came top 10. D'yermak'er charted their second top 10 and a new peak, coming 7th with 'Slow Love' by Pawws to beat their previous peak of 8. The other was a debut top 10 on a debut entry for the latest addition to the Union, Jayrusalem. They came 9th with Sharon Doorson's 'Killer'.

Other Jubirdia positions: Lune's 'Leave The World Behind' representing Aquafina came 16th; observer member and host Skall came 21st with the auto-qualifier 'Princes' by Gang Gang Dance feat. Tinchy Stryder; Daehun were 25th with Ayumi Hamasaki's 'Microphone'; Hendinia managed 26th with Cazzette's 'Beam Me Up'. Persephonia were joined by a long list of other Jubirdia DNQs this month - Bellamia, Bignia-Zaragovina, observer state FNT Nickodonia, Ramrynia, Sandénia and Séyetana all also failed to qualify.

In other significant news, Varakë scored a strong 11th place finish with Smallpools' 'Dreaming' after failing to qualify with both of their previous entries, while returners Utopia came 12th with 'À Tout À L'Heure' by Bibio after sitting out the last two contests. Scruvovnia finished in dead last with Meow's 'Radio Silence' scoring 46 points, to the delight of many Persephonians who continue to hold a grudge against the historical rival, though relations between our two countries are steadily improving.

James Blake to represent Persephonia in BJFestivalen II

Persephonia did not participate in the first edition of BJFestivalen, a spinoff of the BuzzJack Song Contest. However, the snub has not been repeated for the second edition and we can now reveal our maiden Festivalen entry.

Most Persephonian BJSC entries are by new and unknown artists, but for BJFestivalen we've decided to go for an old track by a somewhat established artist. Our entry is 'Unluck' by James Blake, an album track taken from his 2010 self-titled debut album. Blake has had 2 top 10 albums in the United Kingdom and is a major star in Persephonia, having one of the biggest hits of the year with 'Retrograde' which spent 3 non-consecutive weeks at #1 on the official Persephonian singles chart.

The track has been drawn 5th in Heat 4 of the contest, hosted in Benctsin City, Numayania.

Thus it is mere days before the grand unveiling of our next BJSC entry. Be afraid.

James Blake crashes and burns at the second hurdle in BJFestivalen

Persephonia's hopes were initially fairly high for BJFestivalen II as James Blake managed to finish in the top 4 of Heat 4, making it through to the 'Andra Chansen' round with his song 'Unluck'.

But unfortunately the second round was not nice to us and the track finished a distant 4th out of 4 in round 1 of the Andra Chansen.

The song was notably different in sound from a pop-dominated round and it shows in the results. 3 of the other 6 AC participant voters awarded the song the maximum of 3 points, while 4 of the 15 non-participant voters did the same - but aside from an additional 1 point in each set, the song received nothing from anyone else. The 13 total points received from non-participants was by far the lowest tally out of any of the tracks in round 1 and indeed round 2, so the 'jury' votes added 0 leaving 'Unluck' with a total of 10 points.

Nonetheless, we are still proud that we made it as far as Andra Chansen especially with an extremely niche track among a sea of wide-appealing pop songs.

Umiiruka won round 1 of Andra Chansen despite not voting in it and receiving a 6-point deduction, while Caerfyrddia won round 2 despite receiving the fewest points of any track in the round from participants. This caused some distress to some Persephonian viewers resulting in 30 complaints to Persephcom accusing the jury of having too much power in the results. No action is expected to be taken from this, mainly because Persephcom is not actually a real organisation.

Orphic Oxtra somehow DNQ

Despite blanket predictions from Persephonian audiences that the track would win and set a record for number of points received in BJSC, Orphic Oxtra's 'Skeletons Having Sex On A Tin Roof' has somehow failed to qualify for the final of BJSC LVI in Caerfyrddia.

The song finished 19th in the second semi-final, receiving a total of 33 points including 4 scores of 7 or more points (8 from Skall and 7 each from Botanikka, Kluminican Republic and Terra Avium). Zechonia (3) and Kylienips (1) also awarded points to the track.

It's the third consecutive DNQ for Persephonia, the first time this has happened since shortly after the One Big Final era ended, from XXXIV to XXXVI, where we DNQed with Beat Connection then SBTRKT then The 2 Bears. After missing a contest there was then a 4th straight DNQ but not in 4 straight contests, from Joe Goddard in XXXVIII.

Now that joke entry (which was almost bloc voted to glory but was failed by the draw) is behind us, we can move forward to bigger and better things and are hoping our next entry can continue where Truls left off with major success. Hooray.

Beat Connection *.* 'In The Water' was a great track and iirc, you lost out because you never voted in the semi final and would've gone through as you had the most voters (think 3 songs all ended up on 34 points each).

Oh yes, Batidas are firmly behind the next Persephonian entry. :D

The track was alright, but it didn't really float my boat, but it got a pointer for comedy value. As there was a load of shit tracks in Semi 2.
