The only thing that seems odd is that it wasn't done two weeks ago after they were terrible against 10 man Norwich. It's baffling that it took a 1-0 defeat to the runaway leaders for it to happen, you suspect that it's more down to Villa and Wigan's results that Sunderland's. As far as I'm concerned they have nothing to lose by doing it though, they looked dead certs to go down. If they can appoint a manager quickly (as opposed to Wolves pissing about last year) they might at least have given themselves a chance of staying up.

Well, this is what I was thinking - had they sacked him then, when like you say they were pretty awful, their replacement had a good 10 games to try and turn things around and help them stay up. They've left themselves with 7 now - I assume they have a manager lined up, otherwise this could be quite a risky move for them. Mind you, like you say they probably don't have much to lose, under O'Neill, they were more or less a sinking ship anyway.

Reading are guaranteed to go down. QPR might come close to safety, but I don't think they'll have enough in the end

That leaves one position and I'd say it'll be been Aston Villa, Wigan and Sunderland. Right now it seems like Sunderland are the most likely

I did the BBC predictor and this is what I ended with

1 Man Utd +47 95

2 Man City +42 84

3 Arsenal +33 70

4 Tottenham +20 69

5 Chelsea +29 68

6 Everton +11 62

7 Liverpool +25 59

8 West Brom -2 51

9 Swansea -2 46

10 Newcastle -12 43

11 West Ham -13 43

12 Fulham -8 42

13 Southampton -12 40

14 Norwich -23 40

15 Stoke -13 39

16 Wigan -22 38

17 Aston Villa -27 38

18 Sunderland -14 37

19 QPR -27 30

20 Reading -32 27

Sunderland - Southampton in the penultimate weekend and Southampton - Stoke / Wigan - Villa on the last day!

This season seems to be dominated by a change of manager. It seems ludicrous to me that a change was required when they are so near the play offs.

I am surprised by the late changes though.

The timing of the O'Neill sacking is a bit off, but I'd imagine that it's because Wigan and Villa seem to be picking up wins every now and again and QPR are so bloody unpredictable nobody knows what will happen. Their best player is out for season, and they're hiring a manager who was bankrolled massively by Swindon Town so they're taking a bit of a risk hiring Di Canio. That said Martin O'Neill is truly dire, he plays outdated football. If he wasn't such a media darling I'm sure he'd of been getting levels of stick to the likes of Benitez.
Safety all but secured for next season. I will wait until it is an absolute certainty. Away to Doncaster on Tuesday.

I read if Van Persie doesn't score in his next game for Manchester United, he's equalled Torres' longest drought at Chelsea, funny how things turn out!

Surely not? He went 24 hours without scoring didn't he! RvP is only 5 PL games without a goal.

Not sure I only read it! I'm sure he's gone 12+ hours since his last goal though, but the media are only starting to pick up on it now. He looks jaded though, not sure what's happened to him (or Manchester United) lately!

I saw that on twitter

Surely not true though? Didn't Torres go a few months without scoring? Well it seemed like ages

(Watch RVP score a hattrick at the weekend)

Unexpected result for us against Doncaster. Clean sheet too, can't say that that has occurred very often this season.
RvP is showing his Arsenal end of season form since about February.. but last season he finished on 37, I'd be hard pushed to predict he'll score over about 26 (3 more this season).
Good point for us today. Now for a difficult trip to Bournemouth next weekend, hoping for a point there based on recent form.

I don't know if you will get anything at Bournemouth unfortunately :(
