June 1, 201214 yr Surely if you only like 4 out of the 49 songs on the playlist, Radio 1 is not the radio you should listen to/care about. :D And what gives you the idea that I like less than 4 songs from the overall 49 on Radio 1?. I merely just wanted a Loreen addition so I have no idea how you come about with that idea. Edited June 1, 201214 yr by Oricon
June 1, 201214 yr They've already got tons of pop songs on the playlist from Usher, Chris Brown, Sean Paul, Labrinth, Taio Cruz, Flo Rida, Avicii, Cheryl, Rihanna, will.I.am, etc. none of these are pop except Cheryl and maybe some of Rihanna's songs....
June 1, 201214 yr If you're going by pop = popular, then yes, those do fit it. But if you're going by pop, the genre, most of those are not pop artists. Especially not Sean Paul or Avicii. Pop isn't a genre. A song is pop if it's catchy, trendy and doesn't have strong ties with any genre.

They're not pop artists mostly, but those particular songs are pop songs. They're not much different to what David Guetta, Britney Spears and Katy Perry do. RnB and hip hop songs are generally supposed to have slower tempos (maybe around 80 beats per minute or something), and a stronger beat on the third beat of each bar, and so on. Most of those songs aren't RnB songs, even though most of the discographies of those artists may be.
June 1, 201214 yr none of these are pop except Cheryl and maybe some of Rihanna's songs.... 'Cept all of those are "pop" besides, MAYBE, Avicci. All of them have the exact same producers between them all, just because they're not white doesn't mean they aren't pop y'know...
June 1, 201214 yr 'Cept all of those are "pop" besides, MAYBE, Avicci. All of them have the exact same producers between them all, just because they're not white doesn't mean they aren't pop y'know... Exactly. You base genres of songs off the actual song itself, not the artist. On a Chris Brown or Usher album you get mostly RnB songs, so they're called RnB artists, but they also have some hip hop songs and some dance-pop/europop songs (usually for UK singles so Radio 1 playlist them ). I actually read somewhere that most of the chart hits in the US from black artists during this century so far have actually been electropop and crunk, rather than RnB and hip hop like most people would expect.
June 1, 201214 yr Right? It's silly to classify Usher, Rihanna and Chris Brown songs as any less pop than Cheryl's. Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Alex da Kid, Calvin Harris... they all have the exact same production teams and beats. People are obviously basing on the color of their skins, not the actual songs.
June 1, 201214 yr Author Pop isn't a genre. A song is pop if it's catchy, trendy and doesn't have strong ties with any genre. Pop IS a genre. I suggest you dig more into it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_music

It happens the other way around too. Lots of white pop artists release RnB-influenced songs sometimes, but when you say those songs are RnB you get laughed at, yet I'm pretty sure if those songs were sang by Beyonce or Usher, everybody would classify them as RnB no problem.
June 1, 201214 yr Time Bomb went straight into the alist on radio 1, looks like radio 1 have moved to radio 2!!

Michael Jackson was black and he was & still is the King of Pop... many other black artists did pop & dance....but Usher is an R&B artist, and Flo rida & Labrinth are hip hop even if Labrinth is British... Taio Cruz is black & pop... Sean Paul is reggaeton and is NOT Black.... Eminem is white and that doesn't make him less hip hop.... so there goes your race theory down the trash bin.... The one of the playlist at the moment is a dance-pop song. Scream wouldn't sound out of place at all on one of AATW's Clubland albums.

That's got nothing to do with what I was saying. vidcapper said that Radio 1 are supposed to support pop music, and I listed a lot of artists who have pop songs currently on the playlist. Usher did Yeah!, which was the biggest club song of the decade in the US, and was released in 2004 during the Confessions era (which, yes, OF COURSE I've heard, have you heard any songs from 21?). It's a crunk song, so not really RnB or hip hop. He also did Love in This Club in 2008, which popularized synth-pop and electropop in the US (although it was already popular before then). And he also released What's Your Name as a single in 2008. These paved the way for songs like Boom Boom Pow and Just Dance to later become hits. d0MpRXCgtFA

Love in This Club does have RnB influences, but in the same way that OMG does. They're primarily dance-pop songs. And crunk and electropop are similar in many ways. They serve a similar purpose musically, it's the same artists doing the songs, involve a lot of synths, up-beat, made for clubs, etc. Yes, it wasn't solely Love in This Club and What's Your Name that paved the way for the BEPs, Gaga, etc. There were dozens of electropop and dance-pop hits during 2006-2008, so they all contributed a bit, but my point was that Usher was doing that type of music before 2009/2010. Not every single song he does is proper RnB. That's beside the point anyway. Scream is a pop song that's on Radio 1's playlist, so they are supporting pop music.
