no percentages don't work like this.

If the second placed has 50% (let's say 50 units) and the first placed is on 100% (100 units) than the first placed has twice as many units sold, that means it has a 100% lead over the second placed song.

At risk of being a pedant, it can work either way.

The relative percentage increase is 100% As in, Cheryl has sold 100% more than a song on 50% However, the percentage difference is 50 if you are talking in absolute terms, where the top song is defined as being 100%

So long as you are clear on whether or not you are talking about relative or absolute percentage increases - and what you are relating it to (as in the song on 100% or another song on the list) - either is correct.

In the world of science and medical journalism, there is a push amongst the more responsible writers and statisticians to use absolute percentages when talking about your increased risk of getting a particular disease, as it is more meaningful. Whereas the more sensational papers and headline writers like to use relative percentages (without saying so) as it makes it look much more scary than it really is.

I appreciate that in terms of iTunes sales, everything is at least a bit relative, as it's in relation to the top selling song having 100% - but I still think it's much easier and meaningful to just treat the top song as 100% and to base percentage discussions against that figure.

No matter which way you describe it, it's very impressive for Cheryl. I'm pleased she's proven all of the doubters wrong, as it was tiring having people claim she was only successful because Simon Cowell plucked her from obscurity to be on X Factor.

Thanks Nosey. Of course I wasn't pedant so your correction is welcome and of course true. :)

As percentages are hard to describe I would say, the difference between Flo and Cheryl is of course 100-50=50 (but in units rounded up) but Cheryl has a 100% lead in front of Flo because she sold twice as many units.

Well of course we can go on, but it would be more science where I will be lost in the end

There's a new update on kworb but nothing seems to have changed in the top 15.

And thanks Nosey for you post, a rather interesting read, although I would second Ben on his previous post.

Good to see Gary hanging on in there :cheer:

I wonder why the official Song for the Euro "Endles Summer" by Oceana has not been released in the Uk yet.

Her album is planned to be releaed on June 22nd - you can pre-order it on itunes. So, maybe they're just hoping the track will be individually downloaded from then on

Payphone is at #16. I think we can expect the real version to be released anytime in the next two days, no?

Because nobody knows who she is here and therefore nobody cares. Sad really, I liked Cry Cry and as usual the UK is treating the European cup as a place to show national pride rather than European solidarity.

I do hope so! Don't want to see this fake version in the official top 40 :(

I hope Maroon 5 do release Payphone at some point this week - preferably in the middle (so Wednesday/Thursday) to minimise their chances of getting #1

Tyler #25 and Max nearly top 40 :cheer: Tyler should almost certainly be on for top 40 officially now. I wish they'd reveal who actually came 2nd instead of just having both Tyler and Bo as 'runners-up'.

 39. Heart Attack - Trey Songz

Ooh, maybe this could go top 40 then? :o I heard this a few weeks ago, sounds quite decent. It's odd that R1 have playlisted it though, they've never supported him before besides the Chipmunk song he featured on. Without wanting to sound like Eric, is this the influence of 'Climax' at work?

'Three Lions' climbing rapidly, now up to #53. I suppose it should have been expected that it'd only start to take off when England's first game is about to start! This could go top 10 later in the very unlikely event of us winning. ('Vindaloo' is up to #95 also).

Surprised to see "Ordinary People" that low, are our attention spans really that short?

The John Legend version is still at #99.

You really don't like them do you?!

Thanks Ben, I was about to correct vidcapper but you just did it B-)

I *did* include a winking smiley...

Gary Barlow on the increase? REALLY?

Surprises me too. And together with the 2nd version at 34, he is comfortably in 3rd place. The way things look right now he might even be able to hold that position until sunday. :o

Payphone Fake  #15 - heading for the top 10, just like Whistle last week!

Higher Love - Tyler James  #25
