Ah, it's Horatio's.

I enjoyed the CD. And yeah, I can understand why you were terrified about me receiving it. I probably have a very questionable music taste.

I knew I wrote something a bit incorrect in the first track review before posting it. Oh, well.

i don't THINK i've seen anyone with my disc yet~ might just be blind tho.

I have 'ADJUST', the artwork is gorgeous and the music I've heard suggests that I'm listening to yours. Could be wrong though! Will post a review once I've properly digested it!

Thanks for making this compilation. I'm going to have to investigate a few of these artists further, including James Levy, who's probably by favourite find from this.

By the way, I did a little bit of searching, and it turns out that Dive changed their name to Diiv (pronounced the same) and released an album last month, 'Oshin'. Might have to pick that one up too.

Oh wow thank you! :D 'Oshin' is on iTunes so I'll definitely be listening to the previews of it.

ADJUST

1. A rocky intro, very short song with female screamo style backing vocals and a more pleasant female vocal in front. Not bad though, reminds me of something from the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World soundtrack, which is a good thing! 7/10

2. More my sort of thing, a big dance/electro song with a great Tiesto style intro/ravey bit in the middle. Definitely one I'll be returning to. 9/10

3. Bloc Party's Hunting For Witches isn't it, or perhaps a remix of said song? It's good but I've heard it in some form before. Bloc Party are one of those rare indie acts who I seem to like most things by, I'm yet to purchase one of their albums but I own loads of their singles. 8.5/10

4. Sounds like Everything But The Girl, or Tracey Thorn at least, quite a decent electro song with the lyric 'everybody loves you here'. I've heard better by them/her if it is indeed the act I'm thinking of but it's decent, I like the 'whomp whomp' bass style. 8/10

5. Really like this, it's quite minimalistic electro but the chord structure is excellent. It's an instrumental that sounds like something I made on Dance eJay about a deceade ago but that's all part of the charm! 9/10

6. A 9+ minute indie electro song, much like the rest of the album so far. It's decent enough but didn't really hold my attention enough for the whole duration to warrant being quite so long. 6.5/10

7. A really atmospheric track that's quite nice after all the electro at the start. Will be a grower. 8/10

8. Does this sample an old 50s song or something? It sounds like something from the soundtrack of an old black and white film looped around a drum and bass song. Interesting idea though and it's quite good! 7.5/10

9. Lovely airy female vocals on this simmering track, the piano interlude is gorgeous too. 8.5/10

10. Quite an eerie sounding atmospheric instrumental track thanks to the continued presence of the violin. That said, I really enjoyed it. 8.5/10

11. A bass heavy track that goes on for 7 minutes, it's not an instrumental as such but has some gruff groaning noises in the background. Not a fan of that but the music itself isn't bad. Probably my least favourite so far though. 6/10

12. Oh I know this one, it's Toy Solider by Keri Hilson. One of the highlights from her No Boys Allowed album definitely but it sounds so odd to hear on this playlist! Nice to be reminded of the song though and I'm one of Keri's 14 fans so you're preaching to the converted here. 9/10

13. A female led moody indie track, it didn't leave much of an impression on me on the first listen but got better with each subsequent play, still nothing spectacular for me though. 7/10

14. Really like this, a really catchy and melodic electro pop song with a huge 80s influence and excellent female vocals. Brilliant. 9/10

15. French! Nice to hear a different language song on this CD actually and this is pretty decent electro! Really like the singer's vocal style too, almost rap like. 8/10

16. This is very lo-fi La Roux and the background music is very simple but effective plinky-plonk pop, liking this one quite a bit. 8/10

17. Finishing off with a beat-led R&B song, like something Lumidee might have released a decade ago. Quite different to the rest of the CD so an interesting way to round up the compilation but I can't say that I was overly taken by it. 6.5/10

Overall: This was a really strong compilation, I expect that Lewis was responsible for it looking at the genres and types of music on here (and the artwork which is very The Naked & Famous!). It flowed rather nicely for the most part although the Keri Hilson song and the final track were completely unlike the rest of the CD! My favourite discoveries were tracks 2, 5 and 14 so I'll be interested to hear who they're by and more from the respective artists! Thanks for a really enjoyable listen!

'ADJUST' sounds like a CD I could be interested in, can the one who made it send the link to me in PM? Thanks!

On a sad note I don't enjoy the CD I got at all! I'll be listening to it again (& v properly) but be prepared for a review that won't be very nice.

001 Le Tigre - The The Empty

002 The Kills - Cheap And Cheerful (Fake Blood Remix)

003 Bloc Party - Hunting For Witches (Crystal Castles Remix)

004 Tracey Thorn - Grand Canyon (Dirty South Remix)

005 AFX - Crying In Your Face

006 Tomboy - Flamingo (Trentemøller Remix)

007 Massive Attack - Special Cases

008 Venetian Snares - Öngyilkos Vasárnap

009 Emika - Professional Loving

010 Venetian Snares - Felbomlasztott Mentökocsi

011 SALEM - Better Off Alone

012 Keri Hilson - Toy Soldier

013 High Places - On Giving Up

014 Shiny Toy Guns - Major Tom (Coming Home)

015 Ladytron - Black Cat

016 DMX Krew - You Can't Hide Your Love (Aphex Twin Remix)

017 Nivea - Watch It

Well described! #01 is a track I discovered about three or four years ago, but it must be over 10 years old now? Now one of my most-played songs evurrrr. You were spot on with a LOT of your guesses (that is what happens with vast musical knowledge!) #05's description however about the Dance eJay thing might piss off the creator of this track (one Aphex Twin~ oops). As you can see there is more Aphex Twin to be had down below (the remix at #16).

#06 is another of our beloved Trentemøller Remix creations (<3) but not a patch on any of his solo stuff, but a fab minimalist remix that makes me all tingly and chilled mmmm. The two Venetian Snares tracks are from an album of his called Rossz Csillag Alatt Született where he married breakcore and classical elements, #08 has a sample of Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday" (the famous suicide song). Surprised you didn't get the subtle hints in #11 that this was a cover of one of (if not the) favourite song ever!

The Shiny Toy Guns comparison was great, considering that is a cover of a song from the 80's indeed. The Keri Hilson track I always find to be one that's underrated and actually of amazing quality (considering she's an R&B artist, the production is uber-smooth and the vocals are fantastic, it's not as basic bitch as most R&B hoes), but Nivea was just shoved on at the end to indulge my hood sensibilities yoll.

As for the title -- idk I felt ADJUST appropriate as it wasn't really a coherent record in my eyes but was a collection of lots of different songs from different genres I've loved over the years, I'm really really glad you liked it (tbf I thought you'd probs be one of the most ideal candidates for it!)

I seriously hope we get a PROPER savage review at some point during this and I think Atonement should be the one to do it :D

Yeah, you're admittedly more ~hipster~ than me but we share a love for dance and electronica so I was always going to approve of the majority of your CD, I shan't be deleting anything from it as it all flows really nicely and even the tracks I don't like so much are nice enough in the background. Cheeers Lew :D

Also, that cover of Better Off Alone is insane listening back, the melody has been stretched and distorted so much that I honestly didn't notice that it was an Alice Deejay cover despite the original being one of my top five favourite songs of all time :o Listening back with that knowledge though, I can't see how I missed it before!

IT'S MENTAL ISN'T IT

hopefully that makes it go up in your affections ^_^ (can't whack a bit of SALEM <3)

I wish the title was truer about the way I feel about this collection of tracks but...

The first time I heard this CD was in the car coming fairly soon after a mammoth Black Sabbath session so I wasn't particularly receptive to its charms but on second listen on a pair of headphones it did make more sense.

01. My hopes were up for all of the first two seconds of this. I don't know why but I really was hoping for a female vocal on this so it was a bit jarring to hear the male vocals but that's more my expectations than anything else. The track then turns into mid tempo electropop and I realise I have heard it before - Gold & Youth I think. Not a bad start to the CD at all. 6/10

02. Female vocal this time. Quite a slow electro-ballad. It's enjoyable enough but this isn't exactly setting my pulse racing. It should probably click more with me but it does slowly build into quite an effective climax. 5/10

03. Pretty guitar pattern joined by a male voice repeating the vocal phrase. Then the dance beats kick in and the whole effect is quite pleasant but again it's nothing earth-shattering. The beats do mark a welcome change of pace. 6/10

04. The beats merge really well into the next track but I really don't like this. Much too close to europop for me and way too like too many of those totally forgettable BJSC songs that I delete after about 30 seconds. 4/10

05. This is very skilfully mixed as the beats continue to flow into each other. Really quite an interesting intro but once again this is really doesn't hit the mark for me as the singer starts wittering on about Vanilla Skies or something equally profound. No doubt some of you would have been orgasmic over this CD by now but I tire of this faux-indie pop that doesn't hold a candle either to true 80s synth pop or anything that could be called indie from the last 30 years. Forgettable. 2/10

06. Think this is Meg Myers. I can't make my mind up on her or this. Sounds like some hideous major label US pop strumpet bigging it up in an indie-ish stylee. Nope I have made my mind up - really don't like it. It just sounds fake and laboured to me. Terribly generic. 3/10

07. Few strings bring in the next track. A better female vocal starts up but on yet another mid-tempo track. Pleasant enough again but when's there going to be a stand out track. It's all starting to get a bit moribund for me. 4/10

08. Ooh this is more interesting. The tinkling ringing of tuned percussion (and whistling?) is joined by a thumping bit and a semi-decent vocal. This one has got a bit of oomph to it and gets the comp going again. 7/10

09. The sort of tasteful art-synth-pop that bores me rigid. I want some jagged edges please. 2/10

10. I really really do not like this. Spoken word section gets very angry, bemoaning the state of the world over a backing that could barely drag its sorry ass out of bed. This is not the kind of rap I like at all and that skewed guitar sample is f***ing annoying. Love the message this is preaching but the medium sucks. 1/10

11. Reggae-lite. Absolutely. Fukkin. Hate. This. Nnnngggghh. 0/10

12. Oh give me some bleedin' guitars. Please! This starts off much better but it seems to be a bit of a mess production wise. Sounds like too much has been thrown at this and not enough sticks. The song itself is quite a mess and doesn't really hang together that well. Not convinced. 4/10

13. Apologies to whoever's comp this is but it really isn't doing much for me at this moment. Yet another fairly unremarkable track is drifting by. Tasteful beats and a soaring female vocal but I really couldn't care a less. How can music be this unexciting? The singer's voice is also faintly annoying. Oh sorry, just reaching the soar - totally unexpected. Not. 2/10

14. Ah! Bliss! Now here we have the absolutely wonderful Niki & the Dove. Under The Bridges boasts a truly wonderful chorus. Shame too much of their album had already been released so it was a bit of anti-climax. But this sounds as good as the first time I heard it. 9/10

15. Starts off with what sounds like a beat that must have been ripped off from some eighties rock track. Driving bass and guitar effects under a nice vocal. Oh hang on. This is Metric. Recognise Emily Haines at once. Is this off the new album? I must have heard this before and I really didn't rate this. But it sounds much better in this context. 8/10

16. Pianos kick this one off with some bint moaning over the top of it. Thudding bass adds a bit of tension then it all goes horribly wrong. I have reached overload with this kind of 80s synth pop rip off. Please find something else to copy/assimilate/steal from and then come back when you've found it coz this proper got on my tits. Drivel. 0/10

17. There is something really creepy about the treated male vocal on this. Really not sounding good. Could be the greatest song in the world but that vocal sound really is putting me off. More bad 80s rip off sounds. The female co-vocalist has a fairly reedy voice that does not help. You can safely say that I do not like this. Bringing me right down. 0/10

18. Oh this is just getting silly now. Is this what indie/pop really is about in 2012? God this could be an A Flock of Seagulls b-side. This is valueless tosh. 0/10

19. Thank god there is a change of pace. Lush beginning signalling a belated bit of quality. Really like the singer's voice on the understated verse and there is a quirkiness to the chorus melody that is more intriguing than the last 3 tracks. Nice. 7/10 (Could very well be higher with more plays.)

20. Don't like the style of the singer or her phrasing - very fashionable production with little glitches and electronic touches dressing up an Adele-lite song that could have been written at any time in the last 30 years. Really really not my cup of tea. A disappointing end to a fairly disappointing CD. 4/10

While I really do appreciate the effort that was put into making this, this just doesn't float my boat at all and once the track list is revealed, I hope someone else gives it a go and finds it more rewarding than I have done. But thank you for making me give the latest Metric album another chance coz I really did enjoy that track.

I've been waiting for that! Sorry Grebo but you got mine this time around... my heart sunk so low when I saw you had received it on the one occasion I decided to give pop a bit of a try! :D

I'll post the tracklist at some point soon but I can't say that I'd expect you to like any of the other stuff from the artists included.

Typical isn't it! Glad you took the review well!!!! (I just have to give my honest reaction to these things, hang the consequences!)

Thanks for provoking me to listen to Metric again though. I think I have unfairly dismissed their latest a bit.

Seriously though, someone else really should give this comp a go!

I know! Last time I made something really difficult to get in to that I think you would have probably appreciated but this one was firmly aimed at the likes of Ghosty (and then, bizarrely, I received his CD instead!) - ah well!
Just checked out the tracklisting for that compilation you sent last year and I think I would have enjoyed it.

Anyways... the tracklist:

As said previously, the aim this time around was to try and make a playlist that was more accessible and pop-friendly than the usual sort of thing I'd do but without going for the obvious acts that most of the pop fans here would have heard of. I don't really know where to begin in response after THOSE comments(!) but I was most amazed that you didn't recognise the Destiny's Child track - the inclusion was supposed to provide a comedic moment halfway through and was my attempt at a nod to the classic moment in the Soulwax 2 Many DJs comp. Surprised you didn't care for Visions Of Trees as I find them a bit like Purity Ring (although no idea if you like them or not?) and I thought you may have been okay with Saint Saviour also - but I suspect you'd only appreciate original Kate Bush and not mock Bush. A lot of the rest of it was, as you say, synth pop and guitar pop so I can't say that you would like anything by them - I wouldn't even particularly think you'd like many other Noosa tracks either as it happens as they tend to veer into pop territory also. The final track, now you mention it, is rather similar to a straightforward Adele like ballady thing with a few glitchy moments - it's actually a local singer who I just thought I'd throw on the end to see if anyone liked her.

In retrospect I wish I had made it a bit more varied so you didn't have to sit through quite so much pain! I always tend to get sucked into obsessing over flow and ordering of tracklists to though. Maybe one year I'll try not to.
