Hello all! This is a list I've made myself using end of year chart figures, music week sales reports and any other information I can gather so hopefully it's reasonably accurate, I thought mid-way through 2012 would be a good time to start

The criteria I've used for a song to be eligible for this countdown is slightly different to the one Gezza used when he did the best selling female hits of the 80's and 90's where songs with a featured artist are permitted. I've decided to include sinWgles with featured artists as long as the female artist is credited as the lead artist, so for example:

Eminem feat. Rihanna - Love The Way You lie is INVALID because Rihanna is credited as a featuring artist however Rihanna feat. Drake - What's My Name? is VALID because Rihanna is credited as the lead artist

Hope that makes sense?

When should I start? No time like the present!

100. Britney Spears - Till The World Ends (146,200)

Britney's 2011 comeback was a bit of a blip in the UK to say the least. A lack of promotion meant that unless you were a hardcore Britney fan you probably weren't even aware she had an album coming out. Till The World Ends was the second release from the 'Femme Fatale' album and limped to an unimpressive #21 in the charts, her second lowest peaking single at the time after 2009's 'Radar' (#46). 146k sales for a #21 single isn't bad by any means and says a lot for the high 2011 sales climate but it does not disguise the fact that this era was a bit of a flop for Britney in the UK anyway, the album was her first to spawn three conescutive top tens in the US. The sad thing about this is the album was actually her best work since 'In the Zone' in my opinion and Till The World Ends a highlight. Hey ho, there's always next time eh Brit?

99. Avril Lavigne - What The Hell (146,400)

Speaking of relatively unsucessfull 2011 comebacks. After an absence of four years from the music scene Lavigne returned in January 2011 with this which peaked at #16 in the charts, her lowest peaking lead single which would come from her lowest peaking album, Goodbye Lullaby, which limped to No.9 and her only album not to have hit the top spot. I don't think it takes much to figure out why this under preformed, What the Hell is terrible and at ten years into her career is the kind of song she really should've grown out of singing. The rest of the album is decent but neither subsequent singles 'Smile' nor 'Wish You Were Here' troubled the Top 100 leaving Lavigne's UK career a bit in limbo. Hopefully she'll turn it around with her next album as Avril is still one of my favourite artists

Both Till the World Ends and What the Hell were quite a lot bigger in the US than the UK unfortunately. :( Both the songs are really catchy, I loved both Britney and Avril when I was younger, so I wish those songs were bigger here, but oh well.

PM Gezza7T6 and see if he has any plans to do a thread like this one in the future :D

Till The World Ends

After loving Britney my whole life FF was the first album I didn't get into at all but the first three singles were incredible and deserved to be massive!

This is not a rule in the forum guidelines. Shouldn't you put it there if you want to enforce this? Personally, I don't see why people can't post their own lists - I'm sure Gezza doesn't have time to do them all.

It isn't like I have a monopoly on these lists just that they take some time to research and compile, so it's just nice to make sure you aren't stepping on other peoples toes accidentally. In addition to that, this follows in a similar line to previous threads I have done, that's why Jester suggested this.
'Till The World Ends' should have been so much bigger than it was here. Amazing song and definitely one of her best.

I was very surprised TTWE flopped actually. It's easily the best song Britney has released since 2004 in my opinion, and one of the few highlights of her dodgy comeback period circa 2007. I guess the dodgy release and lack of promotion ruined its chances. Her and Madonna really need to understand, that they're not exempt from promoting their material because they deem themselves to be such massive stars etc.

WTH was a disappointment and felt too much like a recreation of 'Girlfriend', but I still liked it, even though my love affair with Avril is pretty much over now.

Oh let him get on with it, this'll be an interesting countdown.

Can't believe Till The World Ends only shifted just under 150k, it's her best single she's ever released (imo).

It's quite sad actually, because if TTWE had been released by Rihanna/Katy/Gaga or someone it probably would have been 2X Platinum by now!

Would have been interesting to see how well Umbrella and Telephone would have done had they have been released by Britney a few years ago though...

I don't think Umbrella would've been as big if it was released by Britney. Maybe in the UK, if she released pre-Womanizer/X Factor disaster, but not in the US, since it would've had much less radio airplay if Britney released it. It still would've been big of course, but not "2nd biggest song of the year" big imo.

98. Marina & The Diamonds - Hollywood (151,100)

I wasn't really sure whether to include Marina or not in this countdown so I researched and found out 'The Diamonds' are not her backing band as I had thought, they are her fans "I am Marina, you are the diamonds" is the statement I came across I believe. Anyway, Marina rose to fame after coming second to Ellie Goulding in the BBC Sound of 2009 poll and her debut album was released in early 2010. This was the first cut from the album and a personal favourite of mine at the time and I have to confess I have loved everything Marina has done and really want her to get some more commercial success as she well and truly deserves it. 'Hollywood' peaked at #12 and this years 'Primadonna' (still to come) managed #11, hopefully this is a pattern and her next lead single will go Top 10

97. Ke$ha - Take It Off (155,500)

The first of a few entries now for the second strangest recording artist to come out of America in recent years (Gaga wins this of course). Bursting onto the scene with Tik Tok in late 2009 Ke$ha gathered a further three top twenty entries throughout 2010, this being the lowest peaking coming in at #15. Though her next single would reach number one Ke$ha seems to have dissapeared off the face of the earth and I for one aren't all that bothered to be honest. The only thing she's done I'll listen to by choice is We R Who We R though I'm partial to Tik Tok when drunk though to be fair Take It Off isn't the worst thing she's put her name to
