It was a flop, based on all the hypr that it was riding! Gypsy would have done far better. Now Applause is just remembered for being trounced by a far better song.

Should not have been lead single and should not close the album either in my opinion. I.. enjoy it but don't LOVE it~ the video is great though, it's just the song doesn't excite me as much as she is capable of.

Applause was definitely not a flop and was the only possible option for ARTPOP's lead single. The album doesn't have any other radio-friendly songs besides Applause and DWUW. G.U.Y. is ok but had no radio spot in 2014.

Applause is so euphoric and infectious for me. It's classic Gaga and I loved all the performances for it. I still go back and watch the VMA, GMA and SNL ones every few months. A perfect song, a perfect single and a decent hit in hindsight. I always wished this was performed at the Super Bowl over Telephone because that way all of her studio albums would've had a song each (at least) and plus without Beyonce, what's the point of Telephone on that main stage. Anyways, happy birthday Applause! LOVE YOU!!

5 singles from.a bad album. Not bad

Applause is currently her 13th most streamed track on a daily basis on Spotify (Above Alejandro among others) so it's really become a staple in her discography. I think it's solid and the best first single from the album. The video is amazing!

A slightly reworked 'Sexxx Dreams' (with as much fire as the iTunes fest performance had) would have been a BLAZING first single 🔥

 

Also I think 'Gypsy' would have been an ideal single in the new year to keep the album selling (in a more smoothly run era), rather than a lead single.

 

I guess we'll never know what could've been though!

I think it was clear choice for first single really based on the album and DWYW was an obvious second choice (should never have had R Kelly on it obs, the Christina one is better anyway). G.U.Y was the wrong choice should have gone with Gypsy love for third.

 

I think the problem overall is just that ArtPop wasn't as strong as the previous two albums. There was a lot more focus on image over substance compared to her other albums.

 

I also agree a reworked Sexx Dreams could have been a decent single but I'd go with single 4 to keep the album selling.
