This set kicks off with two songs that have been ever-presents in the top 200. Snow Patrol's 'Run' is generally overshadowed by Leona's cover version here, having never finished above it, but it has resulted in the original becoming more successful anyway, comfortably top 100 in each of those years whilst only making it once in the previous three. Pink's 'Just Like A Pill' fell to a new low position last year and it doesn't stop falling this year, although it falls only three places this time around. With 'Who Knew' falling sharply from 29 to 85 this is the first year Pink does not have a song in the top 40!

'Dare' has always been moderately successful for Gorillaz but this year marks the first time its been in the top 100, and it comfortably made the final. Just like the 2005 game, it looked like it was going to be the top Gorillaz song until a late rush from 'Feel Good Inc.' meant it had to settle for its customary second place. Hurts were something if a surprise qualifier, but after running away with the play-off round it was only natural for it to perform well again in future rounds. It just misses out on the top 40, but that's still quite remarkable for a song which wasn't that big a hit. Katy Perry is someone who I think has always underperformed somewhat in this competition given how popular she generally is on this site, 'Hot N Cold' reached a peak last year of #18 but drops back out of the top 40 this year, to be one place above its position two years ago. Once again it's her highest placed song.

'Dare' is horrific, honestly one of my worst songs ever ... do not see the appeal at all.

Good to see 'Just Like A Pill' hasn't fallen too much, easily Pink's best.

Pleased to see My Immortal, really didn't expect it to be so high  Really wish SUBG wasn't higher than other Kelly songs, I do adore it but with how amazing she is it's only like 15th in her best songs for me...

The Fear is ultimately my Lily Allen favourite I think, so I'm glad it finished decently. The Girl And The Robot is overrated but good. Baffled at how the hell Wonderful Life and especially Dare got so high, the former is admittedly good but the latter just awful. Quite surprised at Hot N Cold being higher than say Firework, but it is one of her best (along with Firework, E.T. and I Kissed A Girl) for me so yay I suppose.

Yeah, Dare never reached the final before, how did that happen? SUPERB, lovely to see the recognition (h8ers out thx).

I am not getting Hurts' extreme popularity though, I like the song, but sheesh.

Further proving how of-the-moment a song it was, Lady Gaga's 'Poker Face' suffers another six-place dip to #40 after its catastrophic plummet last year from initially being deemed the second best song of the century behind her own 'Bad Romance'. The latter track is very much still a contender for the top but will it do it for a third year in a row? Nelly Furtado's 'Maneater' fell every year from its debut until last year when it made a very slight recovery. It makes a slightly bigger jump of 8 places this year, back into the top 40 at #39.

Florence + The Machine's first of two new entries into the top 40 is last year's 'Shake It Out' which goes straight in at a respectable #38. Their other new entry to come is, oddly, two years older than it, just always ignored in previous editions of the game. The two other songs of the section are both at least four years old but both hit new peaks. Gnarls Barkley have had a yo-yo run with 'Crazy' and this year fly up 82 places to a new peak of #37, only the second time it's even been top 80 after being #48 in the second of its six appearances. M.I.A. has had a more standard run with 'Paper Planes', ignored for its first two eligible editions but entering last year at #52 and now going up 16 to #36.

35 - 11 Gorillaz - ‘Feel Good Inc’ 234pts (40 - 136 - 89 - X - 59 - 11 - 35)

34 - 71 Evanescence - ‘Bring Me To Life’ 235pts (17 - 19 - X - 99 - 68 - 71 - 34)

33 - 33 Alicia Keys - ‘Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart’ 236pts (33 - 33)

32 - 15 Coldplay - ‘Viva La Vida’ 236pts (15 - 51 - 15 - 32)

31 - 49 Girls Aloud - ‘Sound Of The Underground’ 238pts (81 - 35 - 35 - 48 - 30 - 49 - 31)

Feel Good Inc drops from the high it reached last year, but it is still a good position for Gorillaz’ best regarded song... regardless. It’s become a clear favourite around here over the past couple of years so a decent finish in the final is unsurprising, but welcome. No less of a great is Evanescence’s 2003 huge hit Bring Me To Life, which returns to the final after 4 years outside it.

Well, it's quite clear to me that this section is doing its best to be all my very favourite songs in one sitting, but our next song is the first non-mover this year; Alicia Keys’ Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart, which, despite its recentness is already praised by most as a highlight of Alicia’s career, while Girls Aloud’s debut single continues its pattern of moving in and around the 30-50 region.

Coldplay’s Viva La Vida loses its symmetrical chart run by finishing almost in the middle of the previous two positions. Viva La Vida is generally regarded as Coldplay’s signature song, unquestionably until the arrival of Paradise, and it has always done reasonably well in this competition.

30 - 25 Britney Spears 'Everytime' 242 points (55 - 165 - 16 - 17 - 55 - 25 - 30)

29 - 27 Girls Aloud 'Biology' 249 points (62 - 130 - 46 - 06 - 35 - 27 - 29)

A couple of ever presents now both falling small amounts. Both of these songs have finished in a high position in 6 of the 7 years the competition has been running and weirdly, it was the same year in which they didn't, back in 2007. 'Everytime' has always finished lower than its predecessor 'Toxic' but this is the 4th top 30 position for it which is still excellent going. Girls Aloud had the most songs in the final but their highest placed single 'Biology' only just makes the top 30. Girls Aloud have been less successful in this game than you'd perhaps expect. Their highest positions by year are 62-35-30-06-16-17-29, gradually becoming more successful each year before reversing each year after.

28 - 7 Rihanna ft. Jay-Z - 'Umbrella' 253pts (5 - 2 - 3 - 7 - 28)

27 - 57 Kylie Minogue - 'All The Lovers' 256pts (57 - 27)

http://www.xarj.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/rihanna.jpg

Quite a surprising result here. Having been in the top 10 ever since being first eligible for this game, the 10-week #1 Umbrella takes a nosedive in popularity this year, although the fall for several other Rihanna songs up to now makes it a little less surprising than the stats may suggest. Umbrella being the breakthrough huge hit that solidified Rihanna's presence on the pop stage, you might expect it to be Buzzjack's favourite. Not so, for the first time since Umbrella was released, it is not the highest song from the prolific Bajan pop princess.

Leapfrogging Umbrella, up 30 places, is a favourite from Kylie, All The Lovers was possibly the last big hit from Ms Minogue - at this time of writing, her last top 10 hit, and seemingly found a place in our hearts at the same time. Given how many Kylie fans I thought we had, 27th seems a little low for the highest Kylie song, but there's not much competition that would be both eligible and a big hit that everyone remembers to be honest.

(Bré is at Reading I think, and we should get this moving in his absence, even though I've not been great with my own timing)

Really will never get Evanescence, even in 2003 I hated them. Overwrought bilge of the highest order!

"Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart" 33rd best song of the last decade? :( Anyway, on with the positives: great to see "Paper Planes", "Feel Good Inc.", "Viva La Vida", "Shake It Out" and "Crazy" represented here.

26 - 124 Snow Patrol ft. Martha Wainwright 'Set The Fire To The Third Bar' 261 points (X - X - 96 - 131 - 124 - 26)

25 - 31 Leona Lewis 'Run' 264 points (16 - 10 - 31 - 25)

I've always thought that, along with 'Run', 'Set The Fire To The Third Bar' was as good as Snow Patrol ever got, a beautifully written song with the voices of Gary Lightbody and Martha Wainwright complementing each other superbly. Unfortunately at the time of release it was completely overshadowed by their monster 'Chasing Cars', despite the latter being deleted to give more attention to 'Set The Fire...' It was the case here too, as 'Chasing Cars' started off with a couple of top 10 finishes of 9th and 6th before dropping down like a stone falling 29-102-217-329 since, whilst this was totally overlooked. It finally made a play-off round this year, finishing third in its play-off round before performing similarly in the final, making the top half and finishing as the 9th highest song to qualify through the play-offs.

It's joined by another Snow Patrol song, and the only song to have ever made the top 100 for two different artists, 'Run'. Once again Leona's cover version beats the original on here. Originally recorded for Radio 1's Live Lounge it instantly went down as one of the greatest ever covers recorded there, and demand was so high a studio version was recorded to promote her re-released album, and easily went on to become her third number one hit in the UK. I thought 'Bleeding Love' would go on to be better remembered but 'Run' has held up much better after its initial popularity whilst 'Bleeding Love' fall a long way quite quickly.

24 - 118 Sigur Ros - 'Hoppipolla' 265pts (X - X - X - X - 118 - 24)

23 - 26 Lady Gaga ft. Beyonce - 'Telephone' 266pts (26 - 23)

http://static.nme.com/images/gallery/SigurRosPL090212.jpg

While the highest Scandinavian presence on this countdown is still to come, the second-highest takes the unlikely form of Icelandic band Sigur Ros, with their most well-known song Hoppipolla rising almost 100 places on only its second year in the top 200. With a very recognisable tune forming the foundation of the song, it is the best of the small amount of songs I have heard from the band. Despite only ever making #24 on its release in the UK, it matches that number as its peak in this game - which is all the more impressive given its age now.

Telephone continues to climb with support from both Beyonce and Gaga appreciators, despite no longer relying on its video. It comes as a small surprise to me that it is Gaga's 2nd most popular song here - we all know the first - as while I think it is a highlight of her career and an excellent pop song, I could have sworn it was regarded as a bit basic by some. Nevertheless, just like the record in real life, it continues to slowly climb the charts... if we see it at #1 in a few years, I'm calling shenanigans and interference from Bré in order to conform to his chart patterns but for now, it climbs 3 places, 3 outside the top 20.

I'm surprised but pleased 'Telephone' has climbed this year, I thought that would definitely be something that peaks first year and falls sharply.

Delighted Sigur Ros so high too, so beautiful.

I didn't think Telephone would have got better with age for a lot of people, but i love it nonetheless. It is perhaps my least favourite single that Gaga has ever released though!

"Telephone" is still very much my favourite Lady GaGa single, so I'm pleased to see it climb this year!

I'm surprised at the fall, but I half expected "Umbrella" to be quite low this year. Rihanna's had so many huge hits that have sold more since then that it's almost been pushed aside despite it (imo) still being her strongest single.

Pleasing debut for Shake It Out, it's now among my all time favourites I'd say

Nice to see Run climb as well, stunning track and easily Leona's best! Set Fire To The Third Bar is horrifically overrated on here though, as far as Snow Patrol go I prefer the likes of Run, Chasing Cars and Crack The Shutters. Crazy by Gnarls Barkley needs to just DIE as well, awful awful awful song and I never got the hype whatsoever!

22 - 19 Shakira 'Whenever Wherever' 266 points (03 - 12 - 04 - 11 - 27 - 19 - 22)

21 - 08 Outkast 'Hey Ya!' 270 points (13 - 135 - X - X - X - 08 - 21)

Despite newer songs tending to do better in this contest we have a bit of a shift this year. 12 of the top 22 are from the first 4 years (2002-2005) with 10 from the following 6 years (2005-2011). Two of those older songs drop out here just shy of the top 20, both falling from top 20 positions last year. First is Shakira with her first big hit 'Whenever Wherever'. It has been an ever-present finalist and this is only the second time its been outside the top 20 having been 5 places lower two years ago.

Outkast started off here exceptionally well finishing 13th in the first Record of the Decade competition but fell away quickly before dropping out of the yearly final altogether, having to be nominated again last year where it had an incredibly high re-entry position of #8 overall. It's fallen 13 places this year and is the third song from last years top 10 to appear.

Set The Fire To The Third Bar climbing so high is very much appreciated actually, it's the best thing Snow Patrol have ever been associated with for me. Shakira has had a very good run with Whenever, Wherever; to be expected but it holding up so well all this time is excellent.

I won't reveal any songs which remain however I will give the top 20 by year:

2002 - 1 song

2003 - 3

2004 - 3

2005 - 3

2007 - 3

2009 - 2

2010 - 1

2011 - 4

Despite having the most songs in the top 20, the 2011 yearly round winner ('Shake It Out') couldn't manage anything like the same success finishing 38th overall. Neither 2006 or 2008 have any songs representing them in the top 20, with 'Hoppipolla' and 'Run' being the best songs from each of those years despite both of them having to qualify for the final through the play-off round.

2006 top 3:

01 - Sigur Ros 'Hoppipolla' - 24th (4th in 2006 round)

02 - Snow Patrol ft. Martha Wainwright 'Set The Fire To The Third Bar' - 26th (7th)

03 - Gnarls Barkley 'Crazy' - 37th (2nd)

The rounds winner 'Maneater' was the 4th highest 2006 song in 39th.

2008 top 3:

01 - Leona Lewis 'Run' - 25th (6th in 2008 round)

02 - Coldplay 'Viva La Vida' - 32nd (2nd)

03 - M.I.A. 'Paper Planes' - 36th (3rd)

Again, the rounds winner was only 4th top song of the year, 'Hot N Cold' finishing 41st overall.
