Don't Go was the 2nd best #1 of 2011 imo. It's such a beautiful song. That was a big surprise for me that week that it got to #1 (along with Moves Like Jagger debuting at #3, both Don't Go and Moves Like Jagger had very limited airplay at that point). I bet it makes some pop stars feel inadequate when they're having to release songs like Last Friday Night, Just Dance, Starships, All About Tonight, etc. to get hits, and then someone deemed "irrelevent" like Wretch 32 comes along and gets a hit with a song like that!

Heaven I thought would obviously be #1 since the song was also amazing and on every major radio station constantly for over 2 months. I was gutted that Forgiveness didn't reach the top 40. It did well to even get top 50 in the end, since I remember it wasn't even close to the top 100 on iTunes, but on its release week I guess the EP helped it out a lot.

Reggae as a genre makes only an occasional appearance in the chart and usually in force (1993 is one such example, as is 2003 oddly)

Wow. Fingers crossed for 2013 then!! :o :cheer:

I almost feel stupid pointing this out since it's so obvious but it is amusing that you place a 2008 (ie. the year the soul revival reached its peak) song alongside three from the last two-and-a-bit years.

I love you Eric, but that is definitely one of the most obnoxious things you've ever said

Personal taste aside for individual songs, pop/dance music isn't the scum of the earth, and those artists don't have to release those songs for any reason apart from wanting to.

Yay for a reggae revival! Get Patra back out of retirement...she was the Rihanna of the 90s with her songs such as "Worker Man", "Scent of Attraction" and "Hardcore".
There have been a couple of reggae/reggae-ish hits recently but neither of them started a proper revival (Gyptian's 'Hold You' and Sean Paul's 'She Doesn't Mind').

I knew Soon Be Done by Shaggy would be on this list. I expect Jimmy Nail - Laura to show up as well!

YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE- LMC

PEAK POSITION: 30

Mash ups can be gold, so LMC proved in 04 by fusing Whitney Houston and U2 together for a chart topping mix but took 2 years before making their next full release with this “update” of the New Radicals 1999 hit and was met with general apathy. It’s a rather lame affair and for once the charts got it absolutely right.

LIFE WITH YOU- THE PROCLAIMERS

PEAK POSITION: 58

SALES: 9K

FOLLOW UP TO: I'M GONNA BE (500 MILES)

This was of course entirely predictable. The brothers hitting the top was much more to do with Comic Relief than their efforts and thusly small wonder that the follow up, without the aid of the charity, was obviously going to perform poorly relatively speaking. Not a bad little tune but it’s no “Sunshine On Leith” (which is fantabulous FYI) and return from whence they came followed soon after.

MORAL OF THE STORY: YOU GOTTA TRY I SUPPOSE, BUT IT’S UNLIKELY.

Slightly off topic, but how come this song credits U2, when Whitney Houston was also sampled. Did U2 ask to be credited on the song? Because usually samples aren't credited.

DANGEROUS- CASCADA

Who could have foretold just how badly Cascada’s follow up to “Evacuate The Dancefloor” would perform? A piss poor chorus pretty much sums up its failure and whilst I’m no fan of ETD I do have to concede that it is commercial and I can see why it was a success and moreover the failure of this and subsequent singles would seem to suggest the end of them.

Whitney wasn't sampled as Rachel McFarlane sings on it. The words are of course lifted from "How Will I Know" but she didn't write them either.

The back story was that LMC were originally going to sample Whitney's original vocals from "How Will I Know" but Whitney or her team quickly nipped that idea in the bud and hence Rachel McFarlane sang on vocals instead.

THIS! Still so, so bitter

Cascada! "Dangerous" is a decent track, but #67 was a bit too low imo. I think #25-40 would have been fairer, though still included in this rundown :D

LMC - Serves them right. Rachel McFarlene is a good singer, but the songs/remis were TOO narrow for her to sing as it did not show her voice off.

:D

Whilst I understand why 'Man In The Mirror' got the biggest boost in airplay post-MJ death, I still don't regard it as a "legacy song". That will always be 'Billie Jean' to me.

Was going to say exactly this. Cascada beating Michael Jackson to #1 is still the worst thing to happen in the charts since I started following them.

Did

ever charted in the UK?
