See that’s the problem- I consider myself quite up on 90s music but I had no memory of how this went, I’ve just listened to it and I’m still not really any the wiser, deserved all it got.

FOLLOW UP TO: A LITTLE TIME

 

Another song which got lost in the festive rush, for their lengthy career the Beautiful south only had one No 1 hit, “A Little Time”, but for me the lesser hits were all greater treasures (especially the fantastic “Let Love Speak Up Itself”). A typical piece of witty and dryly observed comedy from them comprise the lyrics and it would probably have been a considerably bigger hit if they just left it until January.

 

MORAL OF THE STORY: DON’T PARTICIPATE IN THE CHRISTMAS RACE WITH TOO CLEVER A SONG!

 

Three more flops later!

I loved (and bought) My Book at the time, I remember listening in at 4pm every Sunday to see where it charted and never getting to hear it - I was gutted!

Proving what a cruel world pop really is, Hawkes was thrust into the pop limelight thanks to a starring role in the film “Buddy’s Story” and the theme “The One and Only”, and was briefly a heartthrob for about a month before Smash Hits decided to pick up on a facial mole and suddenly it all crumbled.

“Hello Mr Dizzee, yes we’d like you to record THE official song for the Olympics.....yes it’ll be massive and you’ll be at the opening ceremony- a number one and no doubt about it”- This is how I imagine the telephone convo went where Dizzee got hired for the job, only to find out later down the line that his track was one of 67 that were the “official” Olympic release. After two No 1’s in 2010 with “Dirtee Disco” and “Shout” this disappointed at No 22.

 

MORAL OF THE STORY: WHEN YOU DO A TRACK FOR A BIG EVENT MAKE SURE YOU GET EXCLUSIVITY AS ALAN SUGAR WOULD SAY

OK confession time, I bought the RSF album- Well I got my mother to buy it for me- she’s shameless. Anyway this was clearly a release too far, even a cover of the Lovin Spoonful hit from 1966 which wasn’t on the album couldn’t inspire much interest. I still like this so shoot me!

Dizzee - meh, that song was. I had NO idea Deep Blue Something released a follow-up to "Breakfast at Tiffanys"! I think people bought the song thinking it would be like their #1.

 

I LOVE that Blondie song....shame they can't recapture former glories :(

Really Alesha (Dixon the vocalist here) has it come to this? I know Roll Deep had just a duo of No 1 hits so you should reasonably expect something big to happen with this, but 2010’s answer to So Solid crew (on a lesser scale) were always gonna have limited appeal.....oh now I see the appeal- naughty Alesha.

Everything about this track should have said a hit. William Orbit on production, Guy Chambers on songwriting duties, a rather good video and a slightly more cutting edge delivery from Melua. Quite why it flopped I don’t know- I actually quite like it, presumably her previous crimes against music must have weighed too heavily especially “What A Wonderful World” which was only available through a supermarket! Sacrilege.

Time to be honest now, much as I love “Brimful of Asha” and much as I have little time for Fatboy Slim’s solo career the combination of the two was clearly what made that song a No 1. Many, including myself, were surprised when this came out and we discovered that making commercial dance tracks were not what Cornershop were about. I was such an out and out chart ho back in those days that anything outside the top 40 I rarely bothered with and this tale probably reflects exactly why this failed to ignite in quite the same way as BOA.

 

MORAL OF THE STORY: FATBOY SLIM IS NOT THE FRIEND YOU THINK HE IS

 

The Flood is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. Its a crime that it flopped.

I was a bit surprised that Take Control flopped at the time, but i can see why now. Green Light might've been identical to Good Times, but at least it had a chorus which could actually get stuck in your head. I've heard TC quite a few times and have no recollection of how it actually goes :lol:

Tbf, Roll Deep weren't really that successful - Green Light was such a non-number one (it was midweek #2 as well) and Good Times plummeted after leaving number one, despite being there for three weeks!

With "Good Times", I find that ironic it was #1 the week the shower of shit.....coalition was elected - how wrong were those record buyers and voters?

 

"The Flood" should have been HUGE....poor Katie. I knew the Cornershop follow-up would be in there. The last I heard, they did a single wirh Rowetta (the man like woman from the first series of X-Factor) and that was 2006! :cry:
