yeah but would it have made any difference whether it was another rapper on these tracks??? i don't think so, therefore while i only regard 'Right Round', 'Club can't handle me' and 'Good feeling' as Flo rida number 1's but i can't count 'Right round' as a Kesha number 1 or 'Club can't handle me' as a David Guetta number 1....

You could just as easily apply that to the lead artist though, especially with rappers ('would it make any difference if Flo Rida did 'Give Me Everything' instead of Pitbull?' for example).

Rihanna delivers a few example of defining featurings too :

Live Your Life (T.I. Feat. Rihanna)

Love The Way You Lie (Eminem Feat. Rihanna)

Who's That Chick? (David Guetta Feat. Rihanna)

In everyone's mind, those songs are by Rihanna.

I won't dispute the other two but I don't think I know anyone who thinks of LTWYL as a Rihanna song.

Rizzle Kicks made HSAB better even though they were only on the song for a short amount of time, I get the point you're making but it's better to ensure everyone gets the credit they deserve.

True true, but I think the song would be nothing as popular without the Rihanna bits in it. More like a Eminem & Rihanna song.

It depends. Undoubtedly sometimes a big name will make a hit single, whereas with their name missing it might bomb. We can never definitively say how many sales are due to a featuring credit but I suppose leaving to the artists in question is ultimately the fairest answer
give me some examples plz....

Eminem - Stan

edit ....someone already mentioned it.

I think there should be a Buzzjack poll to decide when a featured artist gets credited every time a new track that features someone enters the Top 200.

Lol :w00t: let's get that run past the OCC and see what they say!

If an artist is credited on a song, then I think it should count towards their number ones. Because whichever way you look at it, they have technically received a number one. That said, I'd be more interested in seeing a list of number ones by artists in their own right when they have minimal input to songs e.g. the Flo Rida situation etc.
I think it should depend on how much the featuring artist has contributed to the song. If a song would have charted as high or sell as much without them, then NO they shouldn't be given the full credit. But if the featured artist has made significant impact on the song then YES.

Calvin isn't featured on it, he's only a remixer and the remix is combined to the original version for chart purposes (the OCC don't list the '(Say My Name)' either).

Re: 'not singing a note on the track', does that mean instrumentals shouldn't be credited to anyone? :P

But the question here is would Spectrum have got to no1 in its own merit as single 5 from Ceremonials without the Calvin Harris unique input?

no, of course not... Calvin Harris turned it into a hit just like Todd Terry did for Everything but the girl's 'Missing' back in the 90's and turned it into one of the biggest hits of the decade after it was ignored the first time it got released....

but both of them didn't get any credits, just loads of cash $$$$ :w00t: ....

a featured artist is a featured artist in my opinion and whether his input is minimal or not, should NOT be given the same credit as a lead artist, if he deserved it, then they would've called it a duet...

People over-react to this issue so much imo. If an artist is credited on a song, it goes on their discography. Nobody is saying the song was successful because of the artist or whatever.

Likewize, if an artist isn't officially credited, it doesn't count for them, even if they had a massive input on the song (e.g. Kanye West on Party or Calvin Harris on Call My Name).

Often even the lead artist isn't responsible for the song being successful anyway. It's more to do with the producers and record labels, especially in pop music. Like Diamonds isn't a hit because of Rihanna, it's a hit because of Stargate, Sia, etc, and would've been a hit if they gave it to a different artist (and it got radio airplay, TV airplay, etc.).

that's gotta be the worst example ever  Diamonds wouldn't even have charted if it wasn't for Rihanna, if it was performed by Sia or even someone more popular like Kylie or Madonna it would've been completely ignored... so it's Rihanna's name, and her name only that made Diamonds such a hit...

I think they should be credited myself as they have added some work to a song. I completly agree about diamonds by Rihanna it has sold on her name and the support she gets, its not soley based on the song, had another artist recorded it it would most likely be ignored.

Yeah but the point is, there's no real way of measuring how much a featured artist has contributed to a song, or how much it would have sold without them. So how would you decide whether they should be given the full credit or not?

i think the reason why producers (e.g. calvin harris, afrojack, david guetta) are now getting featuring credits on songs maybe down to a deal with the record label and the producer. I bet some producers who sent songs to artists in the past were then missed out on the credits for making that 'hit' song. So i think producers are stepping up and making sure they get a featuring credit on the chart so that they get

a) the notoriority for the song

and

b) the money for making the song from the label.

I dont blame producers. I just wished example had given featured credit to Michael Woods for his no. 1 hit 'changed the way you kissed me' lol

I'd like to say, no, "featured artists" don't deserve full credit, but as there's no way of quantifying how much their input , or how much the success of any song was down to them, I have to allot equal credit to all named artists
