Spitfire

Public Service Broadcasting

Album: The War Room EP

Taking public information films and turning them into electro-rock masterpieces? Only Public Service Broadcasting could have pulled it off with such aplomb. "Spitfire" takes samples from a propaganda film from World War 2, and somewhat ironically adds a krautrock backing to the proceedings. Who said that learning couldn't be fun?

Jennifer

Little Comets

Album: Life Is Elsewhere

And falling at the final hurdle is Newcastle based group Little Comets, with "Jennifer". The band combined elements of afrobeat and 80s mainstream pop music to create a song brimming with pathos, impassioned pleas, and a chorus that really sticks in your brain.

The number 1 song of 2012 will be revealed tomorrow. What song do you think has beaten all other competition to reach the top of the pile?

Maybe this one:

Gotye feat. Kimbra - Somebody That I Used To Know ?

Love your No.3. Was my chartopper.

I have a large inkling what the #1 may be..

The song is very likely to climb to #1 on my personal chart tomorrow morning. :D

Great list.. will comment more tomorrow.

Heart Attack

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

Album: Out of Frequency

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - pop is not a dirty word. Which is why I'm glad that the song that I have judged to be the best of 2012 that is absolutely brimming with pop goodness. "Heart Attack" by Danish duo The Asteroids Galaxy Tour is the sort of joyous tune that make you either glad to be young, or pine for your youth. It's smartly produced, with an infectious keyboard riff, a vocalist (Mette Lindberg) who is absolutely brimming with attitude, and an effective dual-chorus that builds to a satisfying conclusion. The Asteroids Galaxy Tour are a group who have discovered the formula to the near-perfect pop song, and "Heart Attack" is the captivating proof.

The No.1 Song in Heaven

The Futureheads

Album: Rant!

On paper, it was a terrible idea. Take a moderately successful rock group and get them to record an album of covers using only the voice. However, by a stroke of luck, the finished article turned out to be a work of genius. Their take on Sparks’ “The No.1 Song in Heaven” is absolutely superb, and in my humble opinion, is probably better than the original.

:o I really like this version but I don't think I can accept that a cover version can ever improve on the magnificent Sparks.

Not what I expected/hoped to be the #1. :(

"Heart Attack" is ok, but it's got nothing on 2008s brilliant "Around The Bend" which narrowly missed out on being a Christmas #1 for me.

Anyway I know/like the following:

[*] The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Heart Attack

[*] Public Service Broadcasting - Spitfire

[*] Foals - Inhaler

[*] Django Django - Default

[*] Passion Pit - Take a Walk

[*] Eugene McGuinness - Harlequinade

[*] Jake Bugg - Lightning Bolt

[*] Various Cruelties - Great Unknown

[*] Public Service Broadcasting - Roygbiv

[*] Howler - Back Of Your Neck

[*] Jack White - Sixteen Saltines

[*] Of Monsters and Men - Little Talks

[*] blur - Under the Westway

[*] The Vaccines - Teenage Icon

[*] Alabama Shakes - Hold On

[*] Lucy Rose - Lines

[*] Muse - Madness

[*] The Big Pink - Hit The Ground (Superman)

[*] Grimes - Genesis

[*] Underworld ft Alex Trimble - Caliban's Dream

[*] The Black Keys - Gold On The Ceiling

[*] Spector - Celestine

Lots of those will be in my Top 100 of 2012 for certain, especially Alabama Shakes, Grimes, Underworld and Foals who may even be inside the Top 20. :D

It was a bit of a shock for me too, but it's an absolutely class song. I'm going to guess the song you thought would be number 1 was Breezeblocks by Alt-J, a song that narrowly missed out on my top 50.

And 22 songs there that you liked? Wow! I'm guessing that I'm going to enjoy your list when you get around to doing it.

On The Road

If Tom sang in a New Jersey accent, and the synth solo was replaced with a guitar, it would easily have fitted onto any full band Bruce Springsteen album.

My picks here B-B;

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour - Heart Attack Nice #1, I never liked them before, I saw them support Katy Perry a few years ago and thought they were tragic. But this is a very strong pop song which changed my opinion of them a bit

Passion Pit - Take a Walk

Bruce Springsteen - We Take Care of Our Own This is probably my favourite song of his in years

Jake Bugg - Lightning Bolt

Of Monsters and Men - Little Talks

blur - Under the Westway This was really quite pleasant actually but not a Blur classic

Ren Harvieu - Open Up Your Arms

Lucy Rose - Lines

Muse - Madness

Grimes - Genesis

Imagine Dragons - It's Time

Jake Bugg - Two Fingers

Hello,

It's taken me longer than I anticipated but I have now listened to all of the songs here which I didn't know. A few I thought were quite rubbish (although all seemed to be low down) and plenty I quite liked, but these were the seven that grabbed me and I will download them.

31 - Cashier No. 9 'Death of Fun' - This really should've been on the album

25 - Ren Harvieu 'Open Up Your Arms' - This is really lovely

19 - Public Service Broadcasting 'Roygbiv' - This is the one of theirs I hadn't heard, I am completely sold

18 - SOAK 'Sea Creatures' much better than the remix sent to Unknown Pleasures

09 - Passion Pit 'Take a Walk' - I hadn't bothered with listening to anything new from them as I didn't like too much of their previous material, but this is as good as anything they've done.

04 - Japandroids 'The House That Heaven Built' - I thought it started slowly but I was enjoying it a hell of a lot by the end.

02 - Little Comets 'Jennifer' - I only knew 'One Night In October' by these, this one is much better, I might have to check these out further.
