It looks like going from 490k to ~200k in a week - that's a 60% drop, so a similar one would see it on ~80k next week. That would make it easy prey to the Xmas voucher market...

In fact, here is my XF sales drop spreadsheet, updated :

Year - Wk1 - Wk2 - Wk3 - Wk4

2010 - 439007 - 299996 - 113037 - 46116

Looking at how high Matt Cardle's sales were after week 1, it helps supports the fact that the amount of snow was preventing people buying the physical over Christmas.

Thanks for this!

Why did the sales drop off so much in the 2nd week of 2005? :o That was the year Shayne Ward won, wasn't it? Brenda was by far the best that year imo.

Thanks for this!

Because a lot of his sales had already been bought in its first week.

What do you mean? Songs can't "run out of sales". Although I guess downloads hadn't fully taken off by then. Were they running out of CDs in the shop or something?

One Pound Fish  #27 :cheer:

I've just youtubed this. I can't make up my mind whether it's brilliant or terrible.

Hope it makes the T40 overall, so Radio One have to play it!

You had a TV then :o :kink:

Good to see James back at #1. I hope he can do it officially (so i can win my bet).

Also sorry if it's been answered but what is Pursuit of Happiness doing back at #70?

It was a CD single driven market. He would have lost 2 days sales on Xmas day and boxing day, making the drop in sales bigger than normal. His 2nd week was basically 4.5 days of CD sales.

You can definitely see the Woolworths effect for 2008 as well - 104k in Alexandra's third week!
even if Scream & Shout get to #1 on iTunes arent those two other songs primarily being bought via physical singles? Meaning next week even if S&S takes over iTunes #1 the other two songs still have a decent shot at being #1 due to the strong physical sales?

Yeah. It was only after I moved out that I didn't have a TV.

I had a dial-up Internet connection back then, so watching anything on the Internet, unless it was porn, or the Call On Me video, was simply just not worth it. So TV it was. :coffee:

Eric your comment got deleted- and don't EVEN pretend to not understand why! :D

Well, when you sell that much on week 1, it rather depletes potential future sales (especially in a CD-driven market, as it still was then)!

It's a hard-ship every 13 year-old boy was facing in 2004.

Imagine being that 13 yr old boy in 1989 and welcome to my world- however that's another thread

CD singles made up a much bigger percentage of overall sales back then. Music Week even reported last week that 'That's My Goal' sold over 250k on CD in 1 day when it was released. It's like 'Amarillo' (2005's biggest selling single) I'm certain that at least 3/4 of its sales were from the DVD single (remember them? :D ) whilst 1/4 were likely to have been downloads.

Also I think it's safe to say Joe McElderry benefitted from battle with RATM looking at how much his sales decreased in the 2nd week. Without the RATM chart battle, Joe might've entered at no. 1 struggling to get anywhere near 400k, and then the 2nd week sales would've most likely been lower too.

I just worked out the X Factor winning singles that had the biggest selling total sales in their first week, second week, third week and fourth week:

06 Matt Cardle - When We Collide (439,007)
