NIP must be one of the biggest hits of 2012 in terms of impact - it is one of the sounds of 2012 for me. This Rudimental and TNGHT are by fav songs!

NIP should ease into the ytd top 30 as well!!

Kiss You is holding up incredibly well considering it has no video yet! Fingers crossed for a top ten repeak when the video is released.

Unless Xmas sales of the album undercut it...

Just so we're clear, I am most definitely talking about 'Rudebox' the single and not the album (as I havent heard that! :P)

Rudebox the single would have been great if Robbie had physically stayed out of the video  , he was the Master of his own destiny in that one I'm afraid :P

The album is well worth a listen btw ..

I deliberately didn't even *use* the word 'rap' in my post!

Why LP, specifically?

Apparently my smiley was invisible again.

The point being that I assume you thought the US charts were full of hip-hop because it's got a lot of rappers in it, when the two don't equate. LP because they're just a good example of a non-hip-hop act who often have rapping in their songs.

So what you're saying is : if Taylor Swift made a rock song, she'd no longer be a country/pop artist?

[Just kidding, so hopefully the 'usual suspects' won't leap at my throat like they usually do]

She already did, "State of Grace" sounds like Paramore.

I wouldn't go quite that far, unless you think 'The Only Exception' sounds like Taylor Swift... ;)

You don't?

'No Church In The Wild' is also back in the top 100! (Barely).

Wow. :o Is it discounted as well?

From what I've experienced, I think the song with the most cultural impact this year is The Motto by Drake. I hate to sound dramatic, but it seems to have changed some people's outlook on life completely! And it's one of the biggest party/club tunes this year as well.

I could imagine The Only Exception being sang by Lady Antebellum. It's got that kind of pop-rock sound like Need You Now.

lol. I think the song is catchy as. When a song gets stuck in my head like that, I just can't care about anything else.

It can't have had that wide of cultural impact, else it would surely have got higher than number 80 in the charts. Surely "Gangnam Style" has had the widest cultural impact this year?

£1 Fish out of the top 40

Yes, I know. It needs (desperately) a price cut. :(

Yes, to £1k per download... :P

Psy definitely wins the 'cultural impact' crown - it's been utterly inescapable from the beginning of September onwards, both in clubs and every single house party I've been to (or if not played at least discussed in detail). Even my local barber and queues at CeX have had conversations about it :P

Before then it was probably a tie between Gotye and Carly, maybe fun as well.

Call Me Maybe and Gangnam Style definitely did. I saw so many parodies and Facebook statuses about those songs and all that sort of stuff. We Are Young is a great party tune as well, but it didn't seem quite as huge as the others.

I said "from my experience", and considering I know approximately 0 people that use iTunes, I don't think I should really use the charts to determine that.

I agree Gangnam Style had wider impact. I doubt many people over the age of 30 have ever heard The Motto before, but they'll know Gangnam Style.

The Motto is quality but it hasnt had as big an impact as NIP. If you asked the average person on the street alot more would have heard NIP even if they didnt know what it was called!

Trouble is, I don't even know what record you're abbreviating to NIP

Call Me Maybe is the most overrated song of 2012.

Discuss. :kink:

It doesn't help that the radio stations name it differently. I've even heard "Ballin in Paris" used as the title before. :drama:

I think if I asked people my age, probably 99% of them would know Niggas in Paris, but I know for a fact my parents or univeristy lecturers would have no idea what the song is, for example. If I played Niggas in Paris to my parents, then played them R.I.P. by Rita Ora, they would probably not be able to tell the difference between the two, even though they sound completely different to me!

Basically, I'm trying to say, songs like The Motto and Niggas in Paris might be two of the defining hits of 2012 for the average (straight) 16-25 year-old male, but they'll be practically irrelevent if you polled 30-39 year-old females. For them maybe a defining song of 2012 was something like Stronger by Kelly Clarkson.

I don't know. Obviously it was a massive hit, but considering so many people say it's their "guilty pleasure" (or something along those lines), it's as if a lot of people think it's a bad song, but just find it so catchy. I think a lot of people also regard it as a bit of a gimmick, so I would say it isn't the most overrated song of 2012. One positive thing for me was the fact that the song was more acoustic-sounding (string-synths) was quite refreshing. I've not really listened to the song much this year personally, but I heard it quite a lot elsewhere.

Imagine this song being played at the Christmas/New Year party at an old peoples home

30 is hardly over the hill (music awareness wise). 40 maybe....

Id say more people over 30 will have heard NIP due to heavy radio 1 rotation throughout the year but the Motto didnt get much support even on radio 1(i know radio 1 isnt the be all and end all)!
