It's that time of year, an opportunity to look at the year just passed and reveal my favourites of the year. It won't be as long winded as usual, certainly not for the albums rundown, but here are some stats:

Number of #1 singles: 16 (2011 had 23)

Number of #1 albums: 32 (2011 had 27)

Number of top ten hits: 154 (2011 had 158)

I can reveal that every song in my top 100 singles of the year reached the top ten of my weekly chart, and there is at least one non #1 in my top ten of the year!

Albums first and a quick look at 21-40 before spending more time looking at the top 20 and commiserations to Steps and Bruno Mars who just missed out at #41 and #42 for being overtaken in my affections by other Xmas albums in the case of the former, or being just a little too recent in the case of the latter. As per last year, compilation albums are excluded. Melodifestivalen 2012 would have been the top compilation, followed by Eurovision 2012 and Now 82.

Some great albums in here, some real returns to form or improvements on previous eras from Mika, One Direction, Carrie Underwood, Cheryl, Cascada and Alanis Morrissette, hits collections from Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Lopez and Girls Aloud which are naturally amazing but not really deserving of being up there in the top ten of the year as I haven't really listened to them that much in comparison to other albums. An unexpectedly great little mash-up project from Elton John and Pnau and an interesting experiment from Kylie, some songs working way better than others. Decent albums but poorer than their predecessors from Rihanna, Ellie Goulding and Leona Lewis. Great, very promising, debuts from X Factor stars Little Mix and Lucy Spraggan and not mentioned are strong efforts from Gotye, Charlotte Perrelli, Ke$ha and South African singer Nádine!

Rumer - P.F. Sloan (EOY #91)

Delta Goodrem - Uncovered (EOY #88)

Nora Foss Al-Jabri - Somewhere Beautiful (EOY #84)

Kicking off the top 100 is the woman who after waiting a decade and a half for her big break, was absolutely everywhere this year, or at least featuring on a number of huge hit records. It's Sia's collaboration with Flo Rida, Wild Ones. She may have sold her soul to 'shut down the club' but it was one of the year's catchiest hits. Tone Damli continues to strike gold with another MOR pop hit with the lovely Look Back, whilst One Direction's third single, One Thing just creeps into the top 100 too. Courtesy of BJSC and a surprising source in Mikey, Ariel Pink's quirky but great 90s Eels-esque indie anthem Only In My Dreams finds a place in this chart as does a brilliant track from one of the best pop comebacks of the year, As I Go by Whigfield! Alanis Morrissette's lead single from her current era, Guardian, harked back to the legendary sound of the Jagged Little Pill era whilst Nelly Furtado's comeback was less well received but I still loved the zany Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)! Spain's best showing in Eurovision for years came courtesy of the big voiced Pastora Soler with her big ballad whilst Rihanna's Diamonds may not have been the lead single that I wanted following the monster We Found Love (EOY #4 last year), but I still like it a lot. Rumer's delightful P.F. Sloan sounds like the theme tune to a 70s TV show about a detective and rounds off the first ten.

A welcome return to the year end top 100 for Salem Al Fakir who provides vocals on Avicii's UK hit Silhouettes whilst Darin's early 2012 single, the frantic Nobody Knows also pops up. Delta Goodrem b-side Uncovered proves that it should have been on the album by becoming the first of five entries in the top 100 for her this year whilst the new Calvin Harris single, Drinking In The Bottle, may have an 'impact date' of next year but it's impacted me already! Rihanna's second single from this era, Stay, hasn't been around for long but already pops into my top 100 of the year, quite gorgeous it is indeed. Talking of gorgeous, Little Things by One Direction is their second of three appearances in this top 100, and is more cute than anything but a very welcome choice of single from them indeed, showing a different side. The beautiful Disney-esque ballad Somewhere Beautiful by Nora Foss Al-Jabri finished second in Norway's Melodi Grand Prix this year, but the winner of that is still to come. Following the monster Euphoria was never going to be easy for Loreen and Crying Out Your Name did a stellar job, certainly worthy of a place here, but obviously can't compare. Italy's Eurovision entry was tipped for the top three, even a surprise win, by many but lightning didn't strike twice, the public weren't interested and Nina Zilli's L'Amore E' Femmina finished in the bottom end of the top ten, I really enjoyed it though, moreso the Italian version. And the woman that we've all seen more than enough of this year, Emeli Sandé, rounds off this section with her jaunty and oh so catchy UK #2 single Next To Me.

Mirakel is blatantly that song in your Top 10 that hasn't reached your #1 throughout the year (iirc).

I have plenty of songs in my top 100 that never reached my top 10, even though I have a similar amount to you. Ah well.

My favourite so far in the singles are (quite predictably) the two Rihanna ones , saving Stay for next year in my own one but great to see it up here already. As for Diamonds, it's good to see it here, I was convinced you had a complete feeling of indifference to it. I still hugely prefer it to We Found Love but then I almost always prefer her downtempos and midtempos.

I'll look forward to what's up ahead as there should be some excellent songs in there.

Alanis could never improve upn Flavors Of Entanglement -_- but YAY for including Celebrity and Spiral in your highlights

Guardian shoulda been top 2 :kink:

I'm sure it'll be unsurprising to you that I know little of what's gone so far. I like 'Silhouettes' and 'Wild Ones' though the former isn't a patch on 'Levels' or any of the versions of 'Penguin'. Listening to that Rumer video you linked, I do rather like it.

Thanks Eyes! For some reason my tastes by the end of the year have never strayed too much from my weekly charts. I made two massive errors last year though, most notably the #19 peaking Pierces' You'll Be Mine which ended up comfortably in my top 50 of the year! Thankfully no such errors in judgement this year though, no non top tens were even close to making it into my EOY chart!

I like Rihanna's new era but it does seem a little behind Talk That Talk and WAY behind Loud. That said, Diamonds and Stay are both miles better than You Da One and Talk That Talk, I do like Diamonds a fair bit but I've certainly preferred other singles of hers. It didn't hang around my chart for long but it did peak in the top five. I'm the opposite, as more of a ballad lover in general, Rihanna's one of those artists whose uptempos I tend to prefer, in fact all of her single ballads have peaked at #5 for me - Unfaithful, Take A Bow, California King Bed, Stay and Diamonds if you count that  How bizarre, I've only just realised that, maybe it's a glass ceiling!

Alanis could never improve upn Flavors Of Entanglement -_- but YAY for including Celebrity and Spiral in your highlights

I didn't like that era much  This is a really strong album though, Guardian did well to make my top 100 :P

I like Silhouettes more than Levels, probably due to Salem's feature but the whole song just feels warmer to me somehow, even the production. Glad you like the Rumer song, she always delivers such great Karen Carpenter-esque stuff.

-----------

Into the top twenty then with a one time one hit wonder who have 'done a Robyn' and managed to surprisingly claw back a decent career out of nowhere after a decade away. It's US rock band Train with California 37, lyrically one of the more questionable albums of the year but I was won over by some of them and the melodies were great, as was the country-esque duet Bruises. A return to form for Christina Aguilera with the brilliant and hugely underrated Lotus, after the mediocre or downright crap for the most part Bionic! And Taylor Swift's biggest era yet is a very solid album packed with potential or already realised hit singles! Jessie Ware still feels like she's about to blow up at some point, Devotion is pure high quality class from start to finish. Another criminally underrated album was the top 50 SMASH from Nelly Furtado, a solid follow up to Loose I thought, take a few tracks from the deluxe edition and plonk in place of a few on the standard and you have a very stellar effort. The collaborations were all especially great.

Swedish girl group Timoteij's Tabu was more to my taste than their debut, bringing some dance beats along for the ride, whilst Ed Sheeran's #3 of last year, +, manages another year in the top 20 by virtue of continuing to be a favourite of mine during 2012! A UK #1 album maybe but few would hail Madonna's MDNA as an enduring classic. It's not by any means but it had a good haul of pop on it that made it far better than Hard Candy! Masterpiece was her most respectable single in a long time and it's a shame that it wasn't a proper hit anywhere. Having been won over by Maroon 5 with Moves Like Jagger, few would have expected their 2012 album to rank higher in my affections than Christina's but Overexposed was a very good pop album, quite different from their old more rocky sound and suddenly they're one of the biggest bands in the world once again. And falling just shy of the top ten is Canadian bubblegum pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen with the excellent Kiss, packed full of catchy melodies, sugary production and her cute charm.

75. Jessie Ware - Night Light (#7)

73. Mando Diao - Strövtåg I Hembygden (#4)

72. Katy Perry - Wide Awake (#6)

71. Marigold - You & I Know (#5)

70. Ria - The One (#4)

69. Adele - Skyfall (#4)

68. Elisa's - Linjen I Min Hand (#4)

67. Jenny Langlo - Million Dollar Signs (#3)

66. Minnie-Oh - You & I (#4)

65. Frida Amundsen - Rush (#3)

63. Tooji - Stay (#4)

62. Jennifer Lopez feat Pitbull - Dance Again (#4)

61. Olly Murs feat Flo Rida - Troublemaker (#6)

Brooke Duff - Till The End (EOY #78)

Mando Diao - Strövtåg I Hembygden (EOY #73)

Ria - The One (EOY #70)

Elisa's - Linjen I Min Hand (EOY #68)

Into the top 80 with my favourite Calvin Harris single from this era, even if it's an unpopular choice, Let's Go sounded to me like a danced up version of S Club's Let Me Sleep and I love it! Usher's unexpected comeback single was the chilled R&B of Climax which I very much approved of before he returned to generic dance with Scream. New Zealand singer Brooke Duff looks a bit like Taylor Swift and sounds great on a huge pop anthem Till The End, give it a listen if you don't already know it! Kylie's Timebomb was far from her best but it's always nice to hear new material from her and it was pretty instant and catchy. Onto Melodifestivalen 2012 and the first of many entries is from Swedish girlgroup Timoteij with the rather good (but not as great as Kom) Stormande Hav. My personal highlight from the brilliant Jessie Ware is the sublime Night Light, whilst Lana Del Rey's second single Born To Die makes an appearance here too. The stunning Strövtåg I Hembygden by Mando Diao has only been in my chart for three weeks but does enough to make it as high as #73, you owe it to yourself to hear this beautiful song. Katy Perry's Wide Awake was the final single from the neverending Teenage Dream era and a brilliant way to go out, the electro ballad like nothing she's ever done before. And an underrated BJSC entry from Ghosty comes in at #71, Marigold's lustful indie-pop song You & I Know.

After finishing inside last year's top 100 with Over You, New Zealand's answer to Rihanna, Ria, returns with The One which was her second top five hit and just as good. Another great pop song from the nation with a very strong chorus. Adele's Bond theme Skyfall can't compare with her big three singles from the mammoth 21 era but it's still another very good song with suitably epic production. Some schlager from dansband Elisa's at #68, the huge cheesefest that is Linjen I Min Hand, surely a rejected Melodifestivalen entry? Norwegian singer Jenny Langlo's Lana-esque Million Dollar Signs makes an appearance as does fellow Norwegian Minnie-Oh with Melodi Grand Prix entry, the electro-poptastic You & I, which sadly didn't make it anywhere near the final, their loss. And it's three Norwegian's in a row with Frida Amundsen's cheery and charming 90s-esque Rush up next. Over to Sweden and the artist formerly known as September makes an entrance with the anthemic Viva La Vida-esque Handerna Mot Himlen, her first single under her birth name Petra Marklund! Back to Norway for the eventual MGP winner and therefore their Eurovision entry, the Eastern tinged modern pop sound of Stay, sadly it came last. Perhaps like with Javine's Touch My Fire, Europeans can't accept Eastern sounding songs from Western countries. Yet we're constantly happy to accept Western sounding songs from sell out Eastern countries, looking at you Azerbaijan! Following their amazing On The Floor, my EOY #3 last year, Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull teamed up again for the brilliant Dance Again, with more ridiculous raps from Mr Worldwide, and the world's most beautiful woman. And finally for this section is Troublemaker, the recent UK #1 from X Factor 2009 runner up Olly Murs who seems to get better and better with each album, even if he's transformed into a one man Maroon 5 for this single!

92. Rihanna - Diamonds (#5)

86. Rihanna feat Mikky Ekko - Stay (#5)

85. One Direction - Little Things (#9)

81. Emeli Sandé - Next To Me (#9)

77. Kylie Minogue - Timebomb (#5)

69. Adele - Skyfall (#4)

62. Jennifer Lopez feat Pitbull - Dance Again (#4)

61. Olly Murs feat Flo Rida - Troublemaker (#6)

Not alot but yey for Olly & Rihanna. Suprised at J lo being so low :o

99. Agreed, the album really highlighted how great her back catalogue is!

96. Definitely, a real return to form, although the album just missed my top 40 of the year

93. I hope so, their entry sounds very promising!

89. I wouldn't have thought anything of his will get a UK push but I'll buy the album, it's out at the end of Jan apparently!

83. Yes! I do have a lot of love for Crying Out Your Name but it's certainly nowhere near as good as Euphoria, looks like a bit of a weak follow up but it would be strong in anybody else's catalogue!

82. I like it a lot but I always thought it was being overrated purely because it's better than their crap entry which came 2nd in 2011. As I kept saying, lightning doesn't strike twice and just because that one did well doesn't mean that everybody would flock to this as well, and they didn't.

77. Agreed, would have given people more of an incentive to buy it, it's a pretty basic pop song, but I do enjoy it! They play it a lot at work

76. It was criminal wasn't it! :(

71. One of the few BJSC nations that are, one of my favourite entries of the year!

68. I'm sure it must have been! Indeed, we need one entry like this every year imo, only Sweden make music like it!

66. It's brilliant, I'm gutted that it did so badly, she seemed like quite an interesting performer too!

Already a top 20 hit for me in 2011, Spectrum by Florence + The Machine turned the grand indie-pop song into a huge dance anthem and it worked brilliantly, kicking off my top 60 of the year and going to #1 in the UK! Another BJSC entry next and it's syrupy voiced Gossling's Wild Love. Brazillian singer Gusttavo Lima's European smash Balada is up next having been a summer smash for me whilst another BJSC entry comes from British indie act Still Corners with the hauntingly great Fireflies! Icelandic indie band Of Monsters & Men had a big UK hit with Little Talks and it finishes just shy of my top 50 of the year as does Girls Aloud's ballad Beautiful Cause You Love Me, from their Ten album. Christina Aguilera's big comeback single the Max Martin penned electro pop of Your Body was a huge step up from Not Myself Tonight and Keeps Gettin' Better and finds itself a respectable position in this chart. And over to my opening Unknown Pleasures entry of 2012, the fantastic Danish singer Freja Loeb with the atmospheric electro-pop song Never Stop Coming Back. Nicki Minaj just fails to reach the top 50 with RedOne's biggest smash of the year, the fantastic Starships! Only a #7 peak on my weekly chart, it beats a ton of top five hits to make it this far!

But she does kick off the top 50 with Pound The Alarm, which harks back to a number of great 90s dance songs and borrows a siren from Britney's Stronger too! Train's 50 Ways To Say Goodbye barely dented the public's interest, unlike the huge Drive By which came just before it. It may sound similar but the lyrics were far more entertaining! Little Mix's proper debut single Wings finds itself a place in the top 50 as does Charlotte Perrelli's Melodifestivalen entry The Girl. A huge pop anthem, how on earth did a twice former winner exit the competition in her heat with this gem? Cyprus' Eurovision entry this year was the excellent La La Love by Ivi Adamou. It finished mid-table having had most of its votes stolen by a certain other huge pop/dance song but was still a big hit in parts of Europe, going top five in Sweden who awarded it 12 points! No Doubt's summery comeback single Settle Down and one of the year's biggest hits, the anthemic alternative song We Are Young by fun. and Janelle Monae both just miss out on a place in the top 40. Engelbert Humperdinck was oddly and controversially chosen to represent the UK at Eurovision this year. A crooner in his mid 70's, he had two million sellers in the UK - almost 50 years ago. But Love Will Set You Free was a charming and strong ballad but his early draw and outdated approach didn't help and he finished second to last, even though the public unexpectedly liked him more than the juries! After Blue last year you have to wonder what the juries have had against us recently! It was a long running #2 hit in my chart and makes a strong showing here. And just before the top 40 is Swedish indie-pop singer Laleh's gorgeous Some Die Young and One Direction album track, hopefully future single, I Would, both former #3 hits in my weekly chart!

56. Of Monsters & Men - Little Talks (#4)

Poor Engelbert. He only made 123 on my chart  Great bunch of songs here. A fewof those are in the higher reaches of mine :D
