So after Diamonds reached the 600K sales mark this past week, Rihanna now has 8 platinum songs in the UK.

Does anyone have any info on this matter?

I suppose Madonna, Elvis or ABBA could have more, but I would like to know if there's anyone with a list or some kind of info about this

Amazing record for Rihanna if only her record company bothered to properly certify her releases.
"Diamonds" may have sold 600000 but it's not Platinum until it's certified

Madonna actually only has 5!

01. Into The Groove - 860,000

02. Like A Virgin - 780,000

03. Holiday - 770,000

04. Crazy For You - 670,000

05. Papa Don't Preach - 645,000

She possibly has another with "Hung Up" now; Gezza's female best-selling tracks of the 00s had it on 547,000 and I'm sure it could've sold 53,000 copies in 3 years!

I did wonder about Hung Up. If Hung Up has passed 600k, then it should be safe to say that Like a Prayer has too - it sold 550k up to September 2010 and is frequently in the Top 1000 on iTunes thanks to often being reduced to 59p; it normally reaches the Top 200 when it is first reduced.

Gaga must have a few? Poker Face, Just Dance, Bad Romance, Born This Way, Edge of Glory and maybe Telephone?

I checked her totals, but she didn't beat Rihanna I'm afraid.

Just checked and Edge of Glory is just under 600k, but Telephone is well over 600k!

Spice girls:

Wannabe - 1.3m

Say you'll be there - 950k

2 become 1 - 1.18m

Mama/WDYTYA? - 690k

Spice Up Your Life - 875k

Too Much - 620k

Viva Forever - 680k

Goodbye - 850k

Here are ABBA's Biggest Selling UK Singles:,

1. Dancing Queen - 1,060,000

2. Knowing Me Knowing You - 845,000

3. Super Trouper - 815,000

4. Fernando – 775,000

5. Take A Chance On Me - 705,000

6. The Name Of The Game - 700,000

7. The Winner Takes It All - 620,000

8. Chiquitita - 575,000

9. I Have A Dream - 570,000

10. Waterloo - 510,000

11. Mamma Mia - 505,000

So the Top 7 have all sold enoiugh to go Platinum.

The next 4 have sold enough to go Gold.

'Money, Money, Money', & 'One Of Us' also went Gold.

ABBA have had 13 UK Gold Singles, via the old criteria - 500,000. Plus, 2

more via the new criteria - 400,000. They are 'Voulez'Vous/Angeleyes',

& 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!'.

However, neither ABBA, nor Madonna, have ever been given any UK

Platinum Singles Awards. When ABBA were together you had to sell

1 Million to get one, & 'Dancing Queen' did not reach it until after 2005.

Madonna has 12 UK Gold Singles Awards, to ABBA's 10, but ABBA did

pretty well, when you consider that she has released more than twice

as many Singles as they did. Well over 60 for her, to 26 for ABBA.

10. Waterloo - 510,000

11. Mamma Mia - 505,000

These figures are from September 2010, so it wouldn't surprise me if Chiquitita has sold over 600k by now since it's had 3 Christmases where it will experience a boost in sales. Same goes to I Have a Dream.

Rihanna has done a handful of good tunes but she is completely over-rated. Unlike Madonna, her albums are not consistent with only one or two really good tracks on them. I really don't get her massive appeal!!

Madonna doesnt have any singles certified platinum in the UK as qualification for a platinum award up until 1989 required shipments of 1000000 units. i do wonder however how the certification process works if combined sales span pre and post 1989.

Still absolutely amazing. We all marvel at how Rihanna has done but it has taken her 7 years to get the same amount of platinum singles as the spice girls did in 2.5 years.

On Rihanna you have to admire her, no one but no one thought she would ever be as big as she is. Her transformation into global popstar now verging on legend has been nothing short of amazing.

I do wonder if in 15 years time we will look back at Rihanna and her records and think 'I remember when Rihanna having 2 songs in the top 10 was sort of par for the course' like we do with the Beatles now.

People might knock Rihanna but we all know new years eve when 'We found love' comes on at parties everyone will be on their feet and loving it.

BTW... by some estimations Who's That Chick is about 25K from that mark... so it could be Rihanna's 9th Platinum single

Singles released before 1989 had to sell one million copies to be eligible for platinum certification, regardless of when the sales actually occurred. But, of course, it's not as simple as that thanks to downloads.

Once upon a time record companies could re-issue singles and add subsequent sales to earlier totals for certifications. In a few cases sales of remixed versions were added to sales of original mixes to upgrade certifications. By about 1989 this had been banned and so unless a single was a genuine reissue of a release sales of the new version started at zero for certification purposes. At least two singles have been certified twice by the same artist, due to different mixes selling enough copies for silver at least.

No single has ever had its certification upgraded as a result of download sales being added to physical sales of an earlier era. So it would seem that the download version is being treated as a different product to the physical versions for these purposes, but not for OCC lists. Most 1990s hits were at their maximum number of formats anyway for chart purposes, so any new version would have been treated separately for chart purposes anyway.

As for download releases - they are a different beast to physical releases and the old rules have been waived or amended for certification and chart purposes. Downloads do not ship a minimum number of copies to retailers to be eligilble and they sell at below the minimum price for chart eligibility under the old rules, though any physical version of the release would have provided a way out of that even without a rule change.

Oh, and the Beatles have no BPI certified singles at all because all their biggest hits pre-date the BPI system which started in 1973.
