As the final eligible chart week for 2012 hasn't happened yet (spoiler: it's tomorrow's chart), I won't put the #1s of 2012 here yet, but instead here are some of the usual stats from the previous year plus a reminder of what I loved in 2011. December 29, 201212 yr Looking forward to this. Seeing as your taste in music is probably the closest to my own taste, I have a feeling I might discover some hidden gems amongst this.
December 29, 201212 yr Looking forward to this. If the top 10 is half as good as last years it'll be excellent. 6 were in my top 21. 2 more top 50 and 1 top 100.
December 30, 201212 yr Author ^Thanks guys. Hopefully I don't disappoint! There are some hits from acts who had massive hits in 2011, namely from The Drums ("Days" at #98), but also including Bombay Bicycle Club; who continued a successful run of hits from the ..Fix era with "How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep?" just about making it to the 100 in at #97. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs also re-released "Household Goods" (#95) which went Top 10 in September but failed to bring the #2 success of "Garden" which remains Orlando Higginbottom's biggest hit to date. The big hit here is one that has yet to fulfil it's potential, "Wings" grabs the #93 after just 8 weeks on the chart, and so far 5 of those have been inside the Top 10! Crocodiles (entered in '11 by me to Unknown Pleasures) round out the 100-91 section with "Sunday (Psychic Conversation #9)" which peaked at #8 in April. 0WG0e9yu1Gg #093 HAERTS "Wings"

Gaslight Anthem were back this year, getting their biggest hit since "The '59 Sound" hit #7 in June 2009; the catchy "45" leapt to #9 in July and is enough for #90 on the 2012 countdown. Another band who returned this year to little fanfare were Eel Pie Island residents, Mystery Jets, whose fourth studio album Radlands was largely ignored but still managed to make the UK Top 40. Lead single from it "Someone Purer" (#84) put them back in the Top 10, reaching #6 in April. 2012 was a bit of a flop year for me on Unknown Pleasures, though my favourite entry from the year still makes my Top 100, that being the wonderfully summer-like "Neptune" by Lemonade at #83, it peaked at only #12 but is not the highest non-Top 10 peaking single, that is much, much higher! :o The first Top 5 hit to fall here is Burial's "Kindred EP" (#85) which made #4 but had a less-than-consistent chart run, the fantastic EP did become his highest peaking hit/EP to date, just barely out-peaking "Street Halo EP" which made #5 last year. The first Lana Del Rey and M83 hits to fall ("Ride" at #86 and "Reunion" at #87) are follow-ups to their massive chart success last year, though Lana Del Rey does suffer somewhat from the year running out with "Ride" and does still have 2 more massive hits still to come. All to be revealed later... XILvOrna0RA #084 Mystery Jets “Someone Purer”
December 30, 201212 yr "How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep" was actually one of my instant faves from Bombay Bicycle Club's album. DoYaThing and Household Goods are especially awesome, and i'm starting to like Wings too
December 30, 201212 yr Together Forever is the best thing on Two Wounded Birds album by some distance. A shame I completely missed it at the time. Nothing in here I don't like, one song which is still to come in my top 20.
December 30, 201212 yr Author ^I agree, I do love the album as well. Here's ten more, and I will hopefully get to the Top 60 before tomorrow. All of the singles from it have made my Top 10 ("The Fox" and "Drummer" both in 2011) and here at #80 is the first of two in twenty twelve; "Tomorrow" made #4 in May and followed-up a single which is to come. "Myth" by Beach House at 76 was a little ill-suited to early summer and therefore suffered a little on its chart run in May/June but I would say it has about found its place. Friends return at 71 with "Friend Crush" after "I'm His Girl" (which made #2 late in 2011) and the fantastic "Hold On" by SBTRKT started 2012 in the Top 10 and hung around long enough to make an impact. There were returns to the chart this year for Hot Chip (#78 with "How Do You Do?"), The xx (#79 with "Angels") and from London band The Maccabees whose brilliant "Pelican" returned them rightfully to the Top 10, peaking at #6 in January and gets them to #77 on the EOY countdown. The biggest and most impressive return though was from Colchester's finest Blur. I've always been a huge fan of the band, particularly their nineties output, but "Under The Westway" was a brilliant return to form and return to the chart for the band who hadn't charted in over 9 years. It soared straight into the Top 10 in July following an on-air/on-sale release - on reflection it deserved to do a lot better but in the end peaked at #4. At 72 is a song which may have escaped your attention in 2012, the beautiful "Bashful" by Kwes, a London singer and record producer, which spent a few weeks Top 10 in early summer. We will hopefully be hearing much more from him in 2013! z9llB97Qj_8 #072 Kwes “Bashful”

Elbow were selected, and what a fine job they did- instantly iconic and grand, "First Steps" is not only beautiful, but also perfect. Their best single since "One Day Like This" but unfortunately it narrowly missed out on #1 in August, though another song (still to come) associated with the Olympics did make it to #1 at least. Jessie Ware is at 67 with the soulful "Running" marking her first of a record-equalling 5 appearances in the 100 - but can any of them make it as high as the Top 10, or even the number 1? Speaking of number 1s, the first to fall is of course the most recent (well excluding Laura Mvula but she didn't make the Top 100); this is when I regret making the chart points based, but as the stats go Foals are at 64 with "Inhaler" but deserve to be much higher of course - the song is a guitar charged epic that is riffs heavier than any of their output to date, but also unmistakably sounds like the band themselves. Hope is high for "Holy Fire" in February! Then at 63 we have CHVRCHES who are tipped highly for 2013, and its easy to see why with the excellent "The Mother We Share" managing enough longevity to propel it close to the Top 60, and just 1 place away from that Top 60 is The Tallest Man On Earth with the heavenly "1904" - again, another hit that deserved to do somewhat better, but the stats don't lie - it was the 61st biggest charting hit in 2012. 40aqF7OvQfs #061 The Tallest Man On Earth “1904” Edited December 30, 201212 yr by Doctor Blind

On reflection it certainly deserved to do a lot better and is one of my favourite songs and videos of the year, I think because "Wonky" was released at the same time I split listening time between the two tracks, but the far better one hung around more and therefore makes an appearance here. Jamie N Commons (another Sound of 2012 hopeful that made little impact this year on the UK chart) makes the first of two appearances at #58 with "Devil In Me", and there are 2011 hangover track from Cults and Foster The People. Jack White came back with a brilliant album Blunderbuss this year, and highlight from it was first single "Sixteen Saltines", a garage rock throwback that wouldn't have been out of place on an earlier White Stripes record - it charged to #6 in June. Icelander's Of Monsters and Men are at #56 with the wonderful "Mountain Sound", but how high is "Little Talks"? nOGM1V6lCgM #059 Orbital ft. Zola Jesus “New France”
December 31, 201212 yr Author Into the Top 50 then, and there are only Top 5 hits to come from this point onward. There were 22 number 1s in 2012, the highest total for a year since 2008 (coincidentally that was also a leap-year of course), 21 of them feature in the Top 50 - only Laura misses out because of its relatively recent status and will therefore chart in 2013's countdown. Lets get on with it then... http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51kyzROZzLL._SL500_AA300_.jpg #050 Fiona Apple “Every Single Night” (690) Debut: 15th July 2012 Chart Run: 32-20-14-09-04-03-04-08-13-20-29-41 (12 weeks) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41wfHFTU0BL._SL500_AA300_.jpg #049 Arctic Monkeys “R U Mine?” (691) Debut: 4th March 2012 Chart Run: 14-09-07-05-04-04-06-10-21-32-42-49 (12 weeks) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51W9hppHSkL._SL500_AA300_.jpg #048 The Black Keys “Gold On The Ceiling” (693) Debut: 4th March 2012 Chart Run: 42-29-15-08-05-06-10-15-23-30-33-41-46-50 (14 weeks) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/513HbpFipmL._SL500_AA300_.jpg #047 Dan Croll “From Nowhere” (720) Debut: 2nd September 2012 Chart Run: 35-24-17-11-08-05-05-07-10-14-22-30-40 (13 weeks) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41Zlzcq8+TL._SL500_AA300_.jpg #046 School Of Seven Bells “Lafaye” (722) Debut: 15th January 2012 Chart Run: 44-31-24-14-10-06-05-07-11-16-24-33-42-48 (14 weeks) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41XhT32LBdL._SL500_AA300_.jpg #045 Jessie Ware “Wildest Moments” (724) Debut: 1st July 2012 Chart Run: 22-13-08-04-06-08-10-15-15-19-26-32-43 (13 weeks) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61moX9Y44eL._SL500_AA300_.jpg #044 AlunaGeorge “Your Drums, Your Love” (734*) Debut: 14th October 2012 Chart Run: 45-28-17-11-06-05-04-04-04-07-09-14* (12 weeks... so far) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51NBFX2YPPL._SL500_AA300_.jpg #043 Niki & The Dove “DJ, Ease My Mind” (737) Debut: 8th January 2012 Chart Run: 37-25-15-05-02-02-05-10-15-21-30-36-46 (13 weeks) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61hPd7YGcOL._SL500_AA300_.jpg #042 Santigold “The Keepers” (743) Debut: 10th June 2012 Chart Run: 37-19-10-06-03-05-08-13-19-26-30-35-40-49 (14 weeks) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51TAwzYXBCL._SL500_AA300_.jpg #041 Jamie N Commons “The Preacher” (745) Debut: 20th November 2011 Chart Run: 38-18-09-06-04-02-03-07-13-22-30-39-48 (13 weeks) Fiona Apple entered the Top 3 for the first time in her career with the brilliant "Every Single Night" in August, spending over a month in the Top 10 - it places at No. 50. Arctic Monkeys had a relatively quiet year and for the first time since 2008 do not feature in the year's Top 40, however as consolation the breezy, catchy and inspired "R U Mine?" (No. 49) became the second biggest debut of the year, straight in at #14. The Black Keys were one of the biggest rock to mainstream crossover successes of 2012, two of their catchiest cuts from seventh LP El Camino were huge Top 10 hits, the first to bow out is "Gold On The Ceiling" which makes it to No. 48. The second of Ware's five singles on the 100 is at No. 45; "Wildest Moments" which sound-tracked the end of Murray's win in the close match between him and Baghdatis at Wimbledon.. I thought it would have made a great soundtrack to end the Olympics, although "Outro" by M83 was a not altogether bad choice really. The wonderful Dan Croll is at 47 with his only release to date "From Nowhere" which jumped to #5 in October. There is also the current chart hit by AlunaGeorge ("Your Drums, Your Love" at No.44) which is certain to carry over into 2013 and hopefully lead to further success. "The Keepers" was the excellent second single from Santigold's first release for 4 years, the lead single (which topped the chart in April) is much higher... but where? bMJkddvJ4L4 #045 Jessie Ware “Wildest Moments”

At 39 it's the recent #1 from Public Service Broadcasting - I was a little late catching on to their interesting style of sampling pubic information films, but this one about 'Peak 15' certainly caught my attention and slowly worked its way to the top of the chart in December. Everything Everything had a couple of minor hits on my chart in 2010, the highest, "Schoolin'" only making as far as #14. It all changed in 2012, as the weird, but wonderful "Cough Cough" leapt into the Top 10 back in October - and has since been followed by "Kemosabe" recently climbing to #9 on yesterdays chart; 2013 is looking to be just as big for them. Disclosure are at #36 and could have made a Top Twenty finish with a few more weeks in the year, "Latch" is one of the best dance songs of the year and I'm so glad it crossed over to some mainstream success. The highest Olympics' related song is "Caliban's Dream" by Underworld featuring the fine vocals of Two Door Cinema Club's Alex Trimble. It had the biggest debut of the year going in at No.10 and the following week jumped to the top spot. There is just too much to comment of but clearly "212" was just so addictive and had to find a place here - it dominated for Azealia Banks, but I haven't liked anything else by her anywhere near as much so far.. vhgfzEm3CWU #039 Public Service Broadcasting “Everest”

At 29, Natasha Khan aka Bat for Lashes took the wonderful "Laura" close to the top spot in September, but the ballad, although beautiful, just lacked something to make it the great song that critics were proclaiming it to be. She does have another single still to feature inside the Top 20 however. Lana Del Rey continued her amazing success into 2012 with "Born To Die" becoming one of the first new #1s of the year, though not quite hitting the heights of the brilliant "Video Games" (but what ever will?). There are also #1 hits from Yeasayer, and Radiohead bowing out here at #26, and 22 with "Henrietta" and "The Daily Mail" respectively. The catchiest and one of the most slow-burning hits of 2012 features here, with it taking 8 weeks for Django Django to peak at #3 - "Default" - very addictive and from an original and interesting self-titled debut, however they became stuck in a very competitive Top 3 and progressed no further. One of the biggest injustices of the year (as well as them not winning the Mercury perhaps). iamamiwhoami, the pseudonym for Swedish singer/songwriter Jonna Lee, was very active in the early part of the year releasing single after single, "Play" from April was the clear early highlight and shot to #2 and makes it to 23 on the chart of the year.Frank Ocean continued to impress, and the standout single from his debut LP Channel Orange was the almost 10 minute epic "Pyramids" (No.24) which reached #2 in September. If you haven't already got it (what is wrong with you!?), it is currently FREE on Amazon so you've got no excuse folks. Anyway "Goods" ruled the chart for much of November and will continue to chart well into 2013, iamamiwhoami is here to stay!

The Nottingham band have released an album this year, which is slightly disappointing to these ears, but the highlight remains this upbeat and Mystery Jets'-esque warped pop single which spent 2 weeks at the top in July.
December 31, 201212 yr Author http://imageshack.us/scaled/landing/33/9b7f.png #018 Purity Ring “Fineshrine” (994) Debut: 8th July 2012 Chart Run: 46-30-19-15-11-09-06-07-05-03-06-10-13-16-21-30-40-47 (18 weeks) Now this is what you call a slow-burner, initially released just before the album it took 10 weeks for "Fineshrine" to peak at No. 3 in September, as a result it lost steam and couldn't challenge for the top (Which is should have rightfully reached). The best single won outright though and "Fineshrine" ends up out-peaking on the EOY chart many of the #1s and #2s of the year.

The track is fairly retro sounding, but the winning horn and synth section at the opening of the track is just stunning. It spent 2 months in the Top 10 and rightfully earns a place in the biggest twenty hits of the year.

It's been an amazing year for Ohio's The Black Keys, finally on their seventh studio album El Camino they've achieved huge success both in their home country and worldwide. The biggest single from the album was the instant classic "Lonely Boy" which was released in late 2011 but finally made it's impression on me in early 2012 and climbed to grab a week at #1 in February. I also love their idea for artwork for this era, taking shots of the building where they recorded their album Rubber Factory that has now been reduced to rubble and bricks..

The addictive hook and melody made this a firm favourite from the album The Haunted Man and after the video was released it made a quick route to the number 1 and spent 3 weeks there, equally the 3 weeks that "Prescilla" spent at the top in early 2007.
