Flo Rida - Troublemaker 585 points • 6 weeks • #1 1-1-3-5-7-4-... 4aQDOUbErNg Olly Murs opens and closes this section. 'Heart Skips A Beat', the Rizzle Kicks aided #1 lead single from his second album 'In Case You Didn't Know', stuck around for long enough into 2012 to make the top 150 again after being 39th last year. 2012 saw 'Heart Skips A Beat' become a breakthrough, if you can call it that, for Olly in the USA where it made #96, with British rap duo Rizzle Kicks swapped out for American rap duo Chiddy Bang. 'Troublemaker', the #1 lead single from his third album 'Right Place Right Time' which started out featuring an American rapper (Flo Rida) is 4 places higher at #146 despite only being available for six weeks, expect that to be much higher in the 2013 list. In between the two, at #149 is Jay-Z and Kanye West's brilliant 'No Church In The Wild' featuring Frank Ocean, who confessed to having fallen in love with a man in a historic moment for the not too bi/gay friendly rap scene around the time the song was charting. Then the year's worst and best #6 hits are back to back, with the better one thankfully winning out. Karmin's awful sub-Ke$ha mess 'Brokenhearted' ruins an otherwise fantastic set of songs at #148, thankfully it didn't bother the charts for too long. Just ahead at #147 is one of the very best songs of the year, Plan B's controversial protest song 'ill Manors' which saw him return to the less commercial hip hop style of his first album but still managing a top 10 hit that ended up with decent longevity if hardly spectacular for a #6. FOrLNHbEzMg Pakistani-American iiO frontwoman Nadia Ali claims the lowest peaking song in the countdown ("Bonfire" by Knife Party is the highest song to never go top 40, at #205), with "Rapture" only just going top 40. Even though there can't be that much difference, for some reason I don't like this version of the song as much as the 2001 original. Producer Naughty Boy teamed up with ever-present Scot singer Emeli again, after producing much of her album, for "Wonder", my favourite song from this section and one I thought should've performed a lot better given her name. She's followed by another Adele, the worse one, who went top 30 again with "Rolling In The Deep" - I don't recall why, probably just because it is Adele after all so why the hell not. American indie-pop band Foster The People are at #142 with "Pumped Up Kicks", which nearly matched it's earlier peak again last year, a song that seems to have been everywhere the past couple of years even though it never got any higher than #18 in the UK. One of Kanye & Jay-Z's better songs, "Clique", closes out this section - I don't quite know why I don't hate this, I put it down to the title itself.

B.o.B hangs on for a second year at #140 despite being one of the earlier 2011 #1s. Another BRITs performance boost saw Coldplay's third 'Mylo Xyloto' single 'Charlie Brown' break into the top 40 after a few weeks of severe underperformance, the song eventually managed a respectable enough peak of #22 and is 139th here but the fourth single did a lot better, probably mainly down to Rihanna. Far East Movement and Cover Drive proved to be much more of a successful collaboration than you'd imagine and 'Turn Up The Love' is at #138. The second and last 2011 X Factor 'also-ran' to make an appearance Amelia Lily is at #137 with her debut and so far only single 'You Bring Me Joy', follow up 'Shut Up (And Give Me Whatever You Got)' is coming out in a few weeks and she is expected to be chasing another big hit. Five 2011 X Factor finalists charted top 100 singles in 2012; in addition to 'You Bring Me Joy', Little Mix's 'DNA' at #155 and Marcus Collins' 'Seven Nation Army' at #200, Little Mix have one more song to come and their winner's single 'Cannonball' just missed out at #216, while Misha B is at #207 with 'Home Run' and #255 with 'Do You Think Of Me' and Frankie Cocozza's 'She's Got A Motorcycle' is, er, #772. Closing off the section is another former X Factor group One Direction who shockingly managed to turn around an underperforming era by releasing 'Little Things' which most expected to go the same way as their previous ballad single 'Gotta Be You' but instead it gave them a third #1. It's my favourite 1D single which is not saying much but I do genuinely like it, probably just because it was written by Ed Sheeran. Edited January 4, 201312 yr by Bré

Starting it off is the beautiful "A Thousand Years", the 2nd hit from Christina Perri which re-peaked at the end of last year thanks to a combo of it being used on Strictly Come Dancing, Fifth Harmony doing a cover on The X Factor USA and it being used in the final Twilight movie - a "Part 2" version of the song was on the soundtrack. It's followed by "You Da One", one of Rihanna's worst performing singles and one not regarded as highly by the fans, but I don't personally get the hate, sure it's not one of her best but I still really like it. The original "Read All About It", easily Professor Green's best single to date, is at #133 with it having re-entered a number of times, likely due to the use of the song itself and Emeli's part 3 being used everywhere. X Factor act Cher Lloyd's biggest hit in the US (even without X Factor USA flop Astro tacked on) lands at #132, not too bad but it deserved a much better peak with it being her 2nd best song (behind the as of yet unreleased in the UK "Oath"). Finally we have the one, the only.."Kiss The Stars" by Pixie Lott. *.* Now seen as a good laugh amongst some circles, it shot up the charts thanks to it being used on Celebrity Big Brother and it having quite clearly the best video ever. http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m99tuglcpW1qfvwf7o3_250.gif

It was one of three songs that peaked at #2 three times without reaching #1 in 2012 and would no doubt be up with the other two (Emeli Sandé's 'Next To Me' and Sean Paul's 'She Doesn't Mind') if it was released a bit earlier. At #129 is Paloma Faith's cover of 'Never Tear Us Apart' by INXS, recorded for a John Lewis advert which ran for about 5 seconds before they replaced it with the Christmas ad featuring a rather less appealing cover which sadly took off much more in the chart and is still to come. 'Remedy' (feat. Ruth Anne) just about beats 'Read All About It' to be Professor Green's highest entry here, thankfully as it's a far better song. Both easily see off his other two 2012 singles, with 'Avalon' feat. Sierra Kusterbeck at #212 and 'Never Be A Right Time' at #256. Both of those and 'Remedy' were heavily aided by price reductions on iTunes. One of Olly Murs' more forgettable singles but nonetheless a decent sized hit and a radio airplay #1 smash as is par for the Murs course, 'Oh My Goodness' is at #127 and the sadly (?) departed LMFAO close off this section at #126 with their final single barring a future reunion, the title track from their second album 'Sorry For Party Rocking'. What kind of slayage from Swedish Eurovision winner Loreen with the 2nd best song of the year, entering at #85 before her massive climb post-contest, sticking around for a fair while in the top 100 and even having a couple of climbs. Damn Rudimental & fun. denying us of the best #1 of the year. The worst song in this section is Charlene and her horrible pronunciation ruining a perfectly good song, which climbed back up a bit after being used on "Dancing on Ice". 3rd single from "Up All Night", "One Thing", peaked top 10 once the official release arrived (don't forget the physicals ;)) [not exact quote but ssh], but quickly fell back down. Harry's girlfriend Taylor follows the band with current (all-round amaze) dubstep single "I Knew You Were Trouble." which spent a couple of weeks in the top 30 when released as a promo single from "Red" before entering again when it was promoted as a proper single. Ed Sheeran, who has a song on Taylor's album, closes the section with "Small Bump", the worst single from million-selling album "+".

Gabrielle Aplin's dull cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 1984 #1 'The Power Of Love' sent the song back to #1 thanks to its appearance on the John Lewis Christmas ad. Another horrifically dull cover is 2 places higher, this one from Birdy. Her cover of Bon Iver's 'Skinny Love' was already an annoyingly long running top 20 hit in 2011 but further cemented its 'classic' status with several reality show and price reduction aided re-entries in 2012, the first of which saw it almost reach a new peak. Between the two covers is a surprisingly mature single by Lil Wayne, 'Mirror' (feat. Bruno Mars) which became his biggest hit as the lead artist despite doing almost nothing in his native USA. Finally at #116 is Wiley's 'Can You Hear Me? (Ayayaya)' which repeated the Ms D feature from 'Heatwave' and also added his fellow rappers Skepta and JME, it's very similar to 'Heatwave' but the better of the two for me. The first single from her #1 album (lol) "Electra Heart", "Primadonna", spent a couple of weeks just shy of the top 10 despite it being a fantastic song. :( Maybe she'll have better luck next time..er, yeah..Next we have "Va Va Voom", the 3rd(?) single from "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded", I'm losing track with her releasing so many random songs in different places, but it's a great track and did quite well. Then there's the fantastic "Shake It Out" from Florence's 2nd album which returned to the top 40 first because of Dancing on Ice and then because it was 59p (maybe also because it was used in Glee? jk). Excellent song, maybe even her best and a lot better than "Spectrum"..urgh. "Sing" is the first #1 to appear in the countdown if we exclude the last few #1s as it fell quickly after the Diamond Jubilee. Not a bad track, better than the Military Wives Christmas #1 from 2011 anyway. That brings us to dare I say it..Beyoncé's best single! Due to "4" not being the biggest of successes I didn't realise this has done quite so well with a #13 peak but it's deserved, I love a good key change or two..or three..or four..
January 6, 201312 yr That Kiss The Stars video still creeps me out-I don't know what's creepier-Pixie herself or the fact someone Ok'd that video. Oh well, it was a hit of sorts. It sort of bugs me that Pink is always compared to Britney/Christina as for me, who was growing up at the start of their careers, Pink was never similar to either of them-well maybe Stripped era-Christina but certainly not Britney. I'm never surprised that Pink's had a sustained career. But she isn't praised to the extent of stupidity like some female artists here. And I also love Love On Top. It seemed so hated here this time last year but I love the retro feel to it. I guess it isn't 'current enough' (whatever that means) which seems to be the only thing that matters these days.

Justin Bieber was good for exactly one single and returned to his usual shit with 'Beauty And A Beat' (featuring a sub-par guest verse from Nicki Minaj), thankfully the actually good 'As Long As You Love Me' is higher here despite peaking lower but that's probably down to it having more time to rack up points. Cover Drive's awfully annoying 'Twilight', one of the year's worst and most inexplicable #1s getting there on Capital support alone, is two places higher and one place ahead of another of the year's worse #1s, Chris Brown's 'Turn Up The Music'. Something much better is at #107, Public Enemy's 'Harder Than You Think' was a bit of an obscure pick as the song to soundtrack the London 2012 Paralympics being a track from the late 80s/90s hip hop group's ignored 2007 album but it worked perfectly and the country clearly agreed as the usage in the Paralympics ad pushed it all the way up to #4 to become by far their biggest hit, overtaking 1998's 'He Got Game' (#16). Silly lyrics but very very catchy and normally I can't stand the man. "Under The Sun", the follow-up to Cheryl's #1 "Call My Name", is a single point ahead and personally I'd class this as my favourite Cheryl single, it just seems to light and summery. The excellent "As Long As You Love Me", perhaps Justin's most credible single yet with it becoming his biggest airplay hit in the US and featuring a great guest verse from rapper Big Sean as well, is in the middle of this section followed by "Silhouettes", a song released using On Air/On Sale which helped lead to a very odd chart run. Not peaking until it's 8th week when it was about at the maximum height of airplay and had a price reduction, the Avicii track also re-entered the top 40 a few weeks later after dropping quickly due to another price reduction. Closing us off is the debut single from teen 'heartthrob' Conor Maynard, a song I hated at the time but don't mind so much now. It went top 2 before a quick descent and his stronger single with Ne-Yo is still to come. Not even a week into the year and we're at the halfway mark!!!
January 6, 201312 yr Euphoria not disgracing itself, I'll never be sure why it lingered around for quite a while the minute it had left the top 40, I guess the initial burst of sales was Eurovision viewers, the next few weeks in the top 40 were the people hearing it on Capital, in clubs or on the two music channels that played it and any subsequent sales after that came from holidaymakers hearing it when they went abroad and downloading when they got back, that's my theory anyway. One performance and little to no subsequent media support does not give a song 15 weeks in the top 100 after all!
January 7, 201312 yr Yay for Silhouettes making it so high even if it's SO close to Top 100. Another yay for Bre and Jahq for not taking forever with this countdown! :yahoo: Thanks guys! ;)
January 7, 201312 yr Author Not taking ages so far - I'm sure it'll grind to a halt pretty soon  It's only going in 5s up to #51, then 50-21 will go in 2s and the top 20 will be revealed individually. We're also going to do a top 50 albums countdown alongside the top 50 singles, which is more material to slow us down! Into the top half. Starting to get to the serious hits now. 100. will.i.am feat. The unlikely collaboration is undoubtedly a big hot mess but I can't help but love it especially the insanely quotable second verse (tell a jealous chicken I don't know what the beef is). The third of Adele's trio of huge hits off '21' and the second of the three to appear on this rundown (she has 4 entries in total in this top 200, but has 'Skyfall' beaten 'Someone Like You'?), 'Set Fire To The Rain' is at #99. Most of its run was in 2011 in the UK but in the USA it became her third #1 in early 2012. Turtle-faced starlet Conor Maynard just outdoes his first single with his third, 'Turn Around' featuring Ne-Yo besting 'Can't Say No' by 16 points and 3 places. They're similarly close in total sales despite the much lower peak of 'Turn Around', thought 'Can't Say No' remains his biggest seller. Second single 'Vegas Girl' lags well behind on both counts, only 226th here. One Direction's 'Live While We're Young' was very quickly moved on from and to good effect but it still did enough to make the top 100 here in 13 weeks. Finally Calvin Harris' fourth '18 Months' single, 'We'll Be Coming Back' featuring Example, is at #96. It's Calvin's first of 4 appearances but Example's only one in the top 200 despite having another #2 hit in 2012, 'Say Nothing' which just missed out at #202. Edited January 7, 201312 yr by Bré

The Lumineers - "Ho Hey" 925 points • 11 weeks • #8 45-23-12-15-8-11-11-12-16-17-16-... zvCBSSwgtg4 "So Good", taken from B.o.B's 2nd album "Strange Clouds", lives up to the title and he continues to be my favourite rapper around, with it being used in a couple of adverts later on in the year ("Stand Up For Cancer" on Channel 4 being one iirc). We then go to "Oliver Twist", a song which is more 'so bad' than 'so good'. Awful. Middle of the pack here is a wonderful track (I'll show myself out for that one). It felt like it came out of nowhere, peaking at #9 six weeks into it's chart run, but it is very good and makes a change for Angel not to have #41 smashes. The AMAZING (according to Joseph, may not be 100% accurate) Alyssa Reid is at #92 with "Alone Again". She came 6th on a Canadian talent show called "The Next Star". It's an alright track but isn't as good as the original "Alone". Finally we have the best song of the section, "Ho Hey", which also seemed to come out of nowhere, I've heard it's been on adverts but I'm not aware of which they would be. Blowing up in the US, it's had a #8 peak in the UK and looks like it could see another climb this week.
January 7, 201312 yr Why is the best song on the entire countdown only #92?! Silly British public not buying it more. Poor Godlyssa. :( And all info you receive from me is 100% accurate and scientifically* proved. (*I'm predicted grade A in all three sciences for GCSE so that's good enough ~)

Florence of + The Machine fame, going under her proper name as a solo artist, returned the favour Calvin Harris did to 'Spectrum' by featuring on Harris' single 'Sweet Nothing', 90th here, which finally turned out to be the single that lead the release of '18 Months' - a good thing he waited for 5 singles because it finally gave him a fourth #1 hit (as a credited artist) after all 4 of the previous singles stalled at #2. Another late single, Katy Perry's 'The One That Got Away', sixth to be released from 'Teenage Dream' (though in her case only the first single was released before the album) is at #89. It could not match the top 10 success of its 5 predecessors but was still a respectable top 20 hit. P!nk's risqué-titled 'Blow Me (One Last Kiss)' is her second and last entry here at #88, the song in the early part of its release week looked like delivering her a surprise #1 but settled for being the third highest new entry at #3, with both songs that beat it still to come. Beating it by 21 points despite 5 fewer chart weeks and a peak 8 places lower is one of the biggest surprise hits of the year, Disclosure's 'Latch' featuring vocals from Sam Smith whose voice is reminiscent of his fellow Sam, Sam Sparro. It's a brilliant song which sounds nothing like anything else that charted in 2012 and it was great to see it get recognition, shame it fell just short of the top 10 despite reaching the top 10 on iTunes. Finally, Ellie Goulding took a brief break from being the Queen of Everything to record 'Anything Could Happen' and is rewarded with 86th place here. It's not too bad but I wouldn't be caught listening out of choice. Then we have the 2nd collab from David Guetta & Sia, one that seemed to disappoint following on from "Titanium", and I'm surprised it only managed two weeks within the top 10 but then it isn't great. That other track I mentioned, you might have heard of it, will probably be appearing very high up. #83 is "Born To Die", a shit song by a crap artist. Let us move on. Oh god, the DULLNESS continues with "Someone Like You", the biggest-selling song of 2011 which topped this countdown last year. Almost at the 1000pts barrier we have another song that some may find dull, and I certainly did at first but I've come around to love dear Ed Sheeran and "The A Team". Have I mentioned how amazing he is live.
