This is an old argument- if this happens then the charts cease to become a list based solely on sales and therefore loses credibility :(

Maybe radio and TV could play some new songs, then people might buy some new songs? When over half of the top 30 songs on the airplay chart have been in it for 3 months or more, it's not really a surprise that the chart is filled with old songs.

As TV were obviously spending the last week of the year reviewing it, the average age of the TV chart (excluding Xmas songs) was almost 4 months!

Is Buble's drop out of the top 100 as a record?

I think I remember reading that the record drop out of the top 75 was just from #13 (Bring Me To Horizon's 'There Is A Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is A Heaven, Let's Keep It A Secret' 13-83 in 2010) so yes, 4-x must be a record! Doubly broken as well because Rod Stewart has also dropped straight out from the top 10.

The above excluding anomalies like the Now! album that 'dropped out' from #1 due to the creation of the compilations chart of course.

Such a shame Pet Shop Boys missed the top 100 in the end. :(

Quite shocking that they did - I thought they had enough of a fanbase who buy their physical releases to prop them up, The 2 versions of the CD single were also available in HMV so gave them increased awareness.

Rod Stewart was 12 last week (although that still beats the record)

Well put :) At the end of the day, there has to be some limit where a song "dies" in the charts. You could do with some major shake-up to how the charts are compiled. Perhaps some limit rule which "promote" songs or have some back-up panel that votes on all songs, and the winner of that pile gets a chart position?

You can't just ban a song because its ''old'' or you are bored with it. The chart is a list of what people are buying, entirely democratic, no picking and choosing, it is what is selling the most, no matter how old it is. It wouldn't be the official chart if the top 40 didn't actually consist of what was being bought.

Oh indeed so- Radio and lack of TV exposure to new songs are to blame entirely, fiddling about with chart compilation won't do the charts any good at all.

Really happy with Kylie's position this week, she held up well considering her album hasnt been really reduced. Im also happy James Arthur managed to fend of britney and will.iam. Nice to see Calvin Harris back at the top of the album chart. Really disappointed about the Pet Shop Boys, like many others i thought they had enough of a hardcore fan base to secure them a top 100 hit especially when it had 2 cd formats as well.

I agree... ITV or BBC1 needs a music show for artists to promote their new music all you get is Jools Holland which is not a prime time show and the odd act on chat shows, its not really good enough, if only BBC had the sense of bringing back TOTP or some sort of music show on a regular basis, but it will never happen, as there is lots of music channels now, which I used to watch, I don't bother no more.

Oh, so he was, my mistake!

This is an old argument- if this happens then the charts cease to become a list based solely on sales and therefore loses credibility :(

too right. If it sells it should get played. Otherwise its not a sales chart, it's a radio concoction like the American Hot 100, which just reinforces what radio wants you to have in the charts not what people are buying. I believe in democracy, and if Radio 1 plug new records endlessly at the expense of established older acts, and still can't get their target audience to buy them in enough quantities to scrape into the Top 40, well what does that say.....

With the other comment about the pet shop boys npt making the 100, its a real shame yes, I bought it for the bonus tracks but most will have the single on the album (who want it) and if it's any consolation even hot new acts with good singles failed to make the Top 40 (I just bought Jake Bugg too). Releasing singles over xmas/New year really isnt advisable unless its aimed at the xmas market.....

I've been saying quite a few times, with how long big hits hang around in the top 40 now (and the fact that it's more dominated with adult contemporary tunes than ever now, which coincidentally are the ones that always hang around the longest too), Radio 1 need to venture into the lower regions of the chart for their chart show imo.

I know some people want them to play the entire top 40 each week, but I'd rather they don't play the 10 longest-runners, and play 10 new entries in the top 200 instead, because it annoys me so much when all these amazing, non-pop songs peak at #43 or something, and then you hear the top 40 and you see something like Moves Like Jagger in there on its 35th week or whatever.

Well then it wouldn't be the Chart Show. There are ways of promoting these songs outside of the top 40, and Radio 1 are actually quite good at it. It's the other stations that are the problem.

According to someone's facebook page it didnt even make the top 200 :o

that is some drop from its midweek position if its true they missed the top 100, looks like all the fans bought the cd's on first day of release and no one bought it after that.

That is bad. Also releasing New Years week is NOT advisable.

I think radio stations needs to be adventorous, but again if they're own by big corporations....not gonna happen. The chart is democratic in one way, but not in another.

or it would become.like the US BB Hot 100 where songs below.number 50 are evicted from thr charts after weeks.... might be applied here...

EXACTLY!!

Capital fm are to blame. Its funny that Eric is the guy complaining about this and he loves the BB hot 100. Its also no coincidence this topic is talked about in the first week of the year after the gift card effect. The chart doesnt need changed its as democratic as they come and the uk should be proud of this - the best chart in the world. Its the Bauer dominated media that needs regulated so that they play all types of music!!

I remember the chart in years gone by, sometimes its full of electro-pop and other types itll move on again!!

Also ugh at Lightening Bolt only reaching 42, i think itll even struggle to get in this week, its only at 24 on itunes even after JRoss!!

Just one "milestone" of sort this week - One Direction reach (and pass) 100 weeks Top75.
According to someone's facebook page it didnt even make the top 200 :o

I read that as well, though I'd be staggered if that was true. Even if no one bought it/ordered it after Monday surely it wouldn't drop over 130 places, that's ridiculous.

According to the sales topic Pet Shop Boys in at #111
