Well when 'Bryan Adams - everything I do I do it for you' was number one for 15 or 16 weeks (or whatever it was) Radio One did stop playing it after about 12 weeks. Steve Wright even blew it off the air. These occurances are very rare and would be dealt with sensitively as the situation required it. As you see normally a song is playlisted until it exits the top ten at least.

Scream and shout was just played again on Radio 1!!!

Not really? Gangnam Style was taken off the playlist long before it left the Top 10...

And yes, I just heard it as well. I'm not sure about the point that you're trying to make by saying that?

The point is that Scream And Shout is getting quite old now and it has had a fair amount of time on the playlist already, so it would make more sense to get the song off the playlist instead of not allowing another song that would chart if it got more promotion to get the same amount of attention.

I can see Galaxy's argument but I don't agree with it, what if Scream And Shout was on the top of the chart for 16 weeks? There would be people who would switch off the radio every time they heard it because they couldn't bear listening to it anymore.

a hot issue here, I see:) both sides of the story then....?

Speaking for myself, I don't have the luxury of listening to the radio all day long for 5 weeks (whether thats good or bad isn't the point, but thats how a lot of people access radio music) so 5 weeks of occasionally hearing a playlisted song (especially one thats number one) isn't overplaying a record though its perfectly understandable if you have the radio on every day you'd get sick of any played record eventually, but more quickly. In America they play records for 6 months. That's overplaying. I'm certainly not fed up of hearing it. The extended chart life of some records (eg Robbie's Candy at the moment, Brit.i.am's) must in part be due to people liking it and not being able to hear it on the radio, so they have to buy it.

Yes 16 weeks is too long, everyone got sick to death of Bryan Adams, and Bo Rap and Wet Wet etc, but radio One has always made odd decisions, eg Blu Cantrell's Breathe they steadfastly refused to play throughout it's entire chart career, Frankie's Relax they refused to play, so you have no option but to buy it, which extends the chart life - it runs through word of mouth. The playlist isn't picked by any magic method, its just of bunch of people sat around deciding for the benefit of the nation based on what they think we need to hear to fulfill their politically-imposed duties. I guess they think Britney appeals to the over-30's, and is over 30 and isn't David Guetta, so they dropped it as soon as they possibly could get away with, having made a highly publicised statement about Robbie the month before.

The blame, if any, lies with the governors and politics, and licence fee payers have a right to complain if they feel they arent providing the service they should. I hope they read Buzzjack!

cheers all!:)

If you could stop picking easy and ill-judged targets that'd be great.

The point is that they don't need to play Scream and Shout any more - anyone investing in pop culture in 2013 is perfectly aware of the song and it's still getting vast amounts of airplay from TV and other radio stations. It's not like R1 are banning it, any DJ is welcome to play it as they are any other song. It's just that they're not forced to because there's no reason for them to do so, it doesn't need the support and the whole point of Radio 1 is that it can afford to drop current hits when they've reached maximum exposure elsewhere and give the airtime to acts who need it more and won't get it from the likes of Capital.

I don't get what this whole fuss is about. They took a song off the playlist, get over it!! As mentioned above, just because it's off the playlist DOESN'T mean they're suddenly going to stop playing it!

err thanks for the comment, I think. Easy and ill-judged? So, staff at Radio One are just doing what they feel like and it's nothing to do with the governors publicly stated target-audience aims? Ok if you say so, then I won't suggest that again....by the way I was attempting to express both sides opinions as being valid while stating my own preference. Obviously not very well so sorry for not being clearer....

I'm not bothered whether its Britney or any other particular record - my point was in Bournemouth where I live, there is only one other station to hear pop music on. I dont watch video channels, we dont have Capitol, and sorry, I have a right to make the point that where I live we dont get "maximum exposure" of records on radio, which is where i hear music for the most part, while I drive to and from work. Radio One isn't commercial, it provides a public service. We can argue till the cows come home what that constitutes, it's all just opinion "and we have to agree to disagree, big deal" - I say fans of music outside big cities have a right to make the point they aren't getting the public service they might want in some instances, such as a quick turnover of chart hits on playlists. I could just as easily say, well there's the internet, why should Radio One play unknown acts, there's every opportunity for everyone aware of popular culture to access youtube and tweet and join buzzjack and hear whatever they want to hear. That's not anything I would support though because I want to hear exciting new music on the radio.

sorry to repeat that again, that's the last comment i'll make on the issue

cheers!

Heres the radio 1 alist - the following songs have been added to the alist rotation even though even the playlist team know they have little chance of hitting the top 10 but they support them for reasons other than chart position to make radio 1 different to the capital bore and because of a massive live fanbase that dont follow the chart and because of decent record sales in the album chart in the long run -

We are the Ocean

Tom Odell (will be big later in the year)

Jessie Ware

Foals

Bullet for my Valentine

Biffy Clyro
