Not *is*, *Should be". It's the primary national pop station, and the only one where we don't have to suffer tons of adverts.

No, it's a music station. In no way is it primarily a pop station, the whole point of it is that it attempts diversity.

I love it when I reply to something and people make the same points that I've replied to after I've made those replies. :D

with references to Radio One not being Capital and not competing with them...I'd just like to point out that we don't all live in London or big cities, and many regions of the country don't have much in the way of commercial radio stations which is why the output of Radio One and Radio two is still so important. Radio One should cater for the regions (with popular chart music) as much as they feel they need to provide a (non-chart) alternative to the big London commercial stations.

Or else the government should stop making it nigh on impossible to start up a local pop-music commercial radio station (they just say no to the licence application)...

cheers Londoners, no offence meant!:)

Capital merged with some other stations such as Galaxy FM a couple of years ago, so it's available over most (not all) of the country now (in some parts of the country you can even pick up multiple Capital stations lol). You might be thinking of Choice FM (that's the station owned by Global that you can only get in London).

thanks for the info eric:) In Bournemouth there's not a lot of choice, Heart (a bit bland) or Fire (which used to be more of a student dance radio station but is now a good pop chart alternative to radio One - apart from the ads and chatter). So I skip between Fire, R1 & R2 depending on who's playing interesting records at any given moment...

cheers!

Hi all I was reading the discussion here and got so involved I registered to join in.

There is absolutely no way that Radio 1 should drop the UK's number 1 song from the playlist!! Unless there are some backhanders going on with the official charts company.... If this song is still number one on sunday then Radio 1 will be looking pretty stupid AGAIN! There have been many times when they have refused to playlist a song and then it hits number one in the past and they never seem to learn from the past mistakes. So if it still is number one there will be no official UK number one on the official UK chart music station then. How stupid is that!??!? Number one or number 9, it should still be played it hasn't been on the playlist that long either. Other songs they go the other way with - play for like 15-20 weeks!

A large chunk of the UK is not served by Crapital but served only by 4 or more Heart stations playing their bland music and networked dross. Radio 1 is essential in these areas even more so despite being the only commercial free station playing pop.

You can come up with as many silly excuses as you like but that won't change what Radio 1 should be doing and isn't and what a stupid policy this is!

How on Earth is it a 'mistake' or 'making them look stupid'? This point gets brought up all the time and it never makes any more sense than the last million times. Radio 1 does not base its playlist solely on the chart, a #1 being ignored is not an error and it certainly doesn't 'make them look stupid'.

I'll take your advice, I won't bother with making "silly excuses" - I and others have already made several solid points as to why there's no reason that they should keep it, and if you can't be bothered to scroll up I can't be bothered repeating them.

If it happens with "Thrift Shop" in a few weeks the only person to complain will be Eric, this is clearly a Britney issue (as is everything on Buzzjack when her name appears on a song).

I already read your points but they are not relevant, as you can't get away from the fact - there are no reasonable excuses at all that anyone can give for dropping the UKs number one single from the playlist.

Swedish House Mafia feat. John Martin Don't You Worry Child - still on the playlist months on. Will I Am, 2 weeks at number one and dropped. Mad

Bruno Mars - Locked up in Heaven they were playing that also to death. I'm not arguing for that, just a reasonable length of time the sort of thing a national pop music station should sensibly do.

Wait, who are you agreeing with?

Radio 1 are so racist against Britney omg.

The thing is, Capital will probably still be playing Locked Out of Heaven (and Scream & Shout) heavily in June as well. They take it much too far (in the opposite direction). They weren't this extreme a few years ago, but recently I've noticed they hang onto songs for AGES, and it's gotten really annoying.

lol. Although part of me thinks, had will.i.am not done The Voice they might not have playlisted Scream & Shout at all.

I had better explain then as obviously those million times the point was brought up and you didn't get it. Radio 1 has always, is now and probably always will be based around the UK Top 40. From TOTP, to the official chart show, to the midweek updates and its 15-24 target, it must reflect the buying choices of those who listen. Therefore I'm sorry, but this is an error, a failure to serve its audience and they are going to look very stupid once again. I could reel you off a long list of other songs that they refused to play that ended up number one or very popular top tens but I doubt you would be interested. Radio stations do make errors as bad playlist decisions are made on the part of human error its just Radio One seems to cock it up quite often. Its probably something to do with being part of the BBC.

Welcome to Buzzjack! I hope you've enjoyed your hour on here so far.

After today Scream & Shout will no longer be the UK #1 single so the decision to remove it from the playlist is looking like the right choice. It's about time it was removed anyway, that song has been everywhere since before Christmas and is boring now.

The official chart show and midweek updates are obviously based around the chart. They're not the entirety of Radio 1. The actual playlist (which is what we're discussing) is not based on the chart. It might be influenced by it but they have no obligation to playlist hits and never have had. It is completely flawed to assume that R1 has a 'duty' to be playing all the songs that are currently popular or that are going to be popular when released. That's not what it's about. If it was it'd be a Capital clone.

And there are measures of popularity besides singles sales as everyone always seems to forget.

Besides, as Pablo (sort of) said, the playlist kicks in on Monday by which time the #1 WILL be on it. It'll be Bingo Players.

Replying to a few points raised...I heard Gemma play Scream and Shout at 08:50 this morning. Can anyone explain why? Before Xmas is only 5 weeks ago and the song is still number one (just). I don't consider the song burnt out yet. "Don't you worry child" is still being played since the summer! Now thats OTT and Capital like.

Radio One does base its playlist around the chart normally, when it doesn't and all other stations play a song that does very well in the charts it looks out of touch with its audience and usually has to cave in and play the song as a recurrent, as it did for example with 'Kelly Clarkson Since you've been Gone'.

The other thing the Radio 1 does in choosing music for the playlist is to break new artists and be upfront, take a bit of risk and ahead of Capital clones. This is welcome and is exactly what it should be doing but not at the expense of either not playing popular big hits or pulling them early. And they seem to be still playing it for now anyway...

They are still playing it because the new playlist does not become active until tomorrow. It's announced on Wednesday but only becomes live on the following Sunday so Scream & Shout is still on the playlist but will no longer be on the list as of tomorrow.

The point is that Scream And Shout is getting quite old now and it has had a fair amount of time on the playlist already, so it would make more sense to get the song off the playlist instead of not allowing another song that would chart if it got more promotion to get the same amount of attention.

I can see Galaxy's argument but I don't agree with it, what if Scream And Shout was on the top of the chart for 16 weeks? There would be people who would switch off the radio every time they heard it because they couldn't bear listening to it anymore.
