Hyped yes but they're selling off general public interest alone, with barely any previous fanbase (their last album could barely cross Silver). I like Daft Punk, but I wish you wouldn't assume someone being a tad more negative than everyone else is a hater.

I'm not saying its guaranteed to go stratospheric but I wouldn't say this statement is true. Their last album was generally seen as a misfire both critically and commercially, although it did still got top 10 without the aid of a hit single. Not to mention it was only four years after Discovery, whereas this is their first in eight years. Plus, both of their last two albums before Human After All went Gold & Platinum respectively and they were aided by a hit single, but still not massive selling one (even One More Time with its high peak, didn't sell amazingly well overall). Daft Punk have definitely picked up a fanbase over the years, I wouldn't be able to name anyone who doesn't know who they are (that idiotic thread I saw the other day exemplified that).

MDNA went #1 and was by an artist with a huge physical fanbase yet only sold 75k or so, but you're right that #2 is pretty amazing so I'll bump up to 100k or so.

'Barely any previous fanbase'? Daft Punk? That's ridiculous on a GRIFF level.

Fanbase / sales for previous album. Only 50,000 people bought their last album, that's not a large springboard.

I guess 'fanbase' was the wrong word to use, but I do believe my point about them not having a huge amount of people that can 100% be counted on to buy the album still rings true. No matter how well known you are, it's a lot easier to sell off the back of a million seller than a 50k seller.

I just think a lot of Daft Punk's fans were disappointed with the material they released in 2005. I still think 'Robot Rock' was a lazy song as I commented in that weird Daft Punk new band thread. 'Get Lucky' is probably being hailed as a true return to form kinda like Kylie Minogue when she released 'CGYOOMH'. Why else would 'Get Lucky' be selling in such big numbers? For me, it's purely down to the fact they've delivered an incrdible song and it's appealled to a widespread audience.

Still doesn't mean the album will sell bucketloads. The albums market is just not what it was 6/7 years ago. I do believe that this will change but it'll probably end up including stream sales or something to boost album sales in the next couple of years. idk?

Well, HOW RUDE. I would say your comment was ridiculous if you didn't make those valid points! :kink:

Umi, how is it a lot easier to sell off the back of a million seller than a 50k seller, when Daft Punk grown a massive cult fanbase over the years? I can see where you're coming from, but I think your predictions are a bit too negative to actually happen. :P

I think there should have been a '<50k' catagory in the poll, just for the sake of completeness.

As it is, I voted for 51-75k because DP aren't normally big album sellers, combined with the general deadness of the market.

And before you say it, Get Lucky will certainly help - that's why I predicted 51-75k, rather than the 'under 25k' I'd have predicted without it...

Because more people have interest in the band.

Do you think Oasis/Be Here Now would have opened with such staggering sales had Morning Glory not sold 4 million?

It's so hard to predict Random Access Memories but I find it hard to believe that it will seller fewer than 100,000 in week 1.

Daft Punk aren't selling 'off the back of' Human After All anyway, that was released 8 years ago. I'm not sure about before but certainly during those 8 years they have built up an enormous fanbase and 'Random Access Memories' is getting a ridiculous amount of hype. It definitely won't sell less than 100k.
I think as usual with album releases in the past couple of years, people are overestimating - the albums climate is really bad after all. I voted 76-100k but wouldn't be surprised to see it over 100k. If it gets over 150k I'll be astounded. (And yes, this is taking into account Get Lucky's sales - if it hadn't been for the lead single doing so well I'd have predicted this album to do absolutely nothing  )

Well said.

In 2005 I did not know that Daft Punk existed but over the years music video channels, my love for chart and EDM music have all introduced me to their songs.

I think a lot of ppl are talking about get lucky & most people don't buy singles, add to it the interviews and teasers and general press, so I think they album is gonna fly.

Voted 100-125k, might be wrong and we'll have Daft Punk up to 150k.

Rudimental are also a dance act and managed to get to 63k just last week off the back of two #1s and another hit single. But 'Feel the Love' was a year ago and 'Waiting All Night' is about half as popular as 'Get Lucky'. Plus, Daft Punk are WAYYY more established act, and the indie-esque crown have jumped on their bandwagon massively.

The parallels with Justin Timberlake are quite apt given that both releases have been jumped on by the Pitchfork side as well as mainstream radio etc. Given The 20/20 Experience sold 100k with what was in retrospect a far smaller single, I'd expect 150k. Admittedly JT's back catalogue has sold better but I doubt that the same people who bought Justified were necessarily the ones buying his new one.

It's #1 on iTunes through pre-orders, probably cos you can stream the whole album.

I tried to stream it but it's not working for me.

When has an album gone to #1 n iTunes on pre-order before? (actual question)

Madonna's 'MDNA' and David Bowie's 'The Next Day' were both #1 on pre-orders shortly after the pre-order came out - I've never seen an album at #1 on pre-orders this late as far as I can remember!

Having heard the album a few times I'm totally in love with it.

It's EVERYTHING! Well it pays homage to everything while being it's own thing.

It made me cry last night it was that good!

So well produced & every minute reveals a surprise.

And having seen the reviews (average 89/100 on metacritic) I can't see it selling less than 200k.

Even most people leaving comments on the streaming-rip on pirate bay were saying they've pre-ordered it or are gonna buy it the day it's out.

Hoping for arctic monkey's debut sales!

It made me cry last night it was that good!

Really? It's hardly going to be remembered for it's "inspirational lyrics". I could have cried at how disappointed I was with the album, but that's obviously not your view. :P
