By the way, there really has to be a rationale for a lot of the inclusions on here beyond 'you don't hear it on the radio anymore'. You don't tend to hear most songs beyond the last two years on the radio anymore unless they're part of the generally accepted 'classics' list - I mean, just take the likes of Don't Cha. Probably remembered by just about everybody but hardly a radio standard.

I wouldn't say it was "massive" but it got to #1 - 'Never Gonna Leave Your Side' by Daniel Bedingfield. I think the last time I heard this was in 2003. :D

That's what I'm thinking, there's lots here which really aren't forgotten. In fact, many songs listed here I have heard a fair few times on TV: 'When Love Takes Over', 'Mercy', 'Meet Me Halfway'. Everyone will think differently but with some I can't see how they've been forgotten at all.

I actually think 'Boom Boom Pow' has been forgotten. It was completely overshadowed by 'I Gotta Feeling' (unfortunately) despite charting high around the world and even spending months at #1 in the US.

Also, 'Deja Vu' from 2006.

Ask people to remember the biggest hits of this decade so far and in general 2010 will get overshadowed by '11 and '12, when the really huge ones like Someone Like You/Party Rock Anthem/Somebody That I Used To Know/We Are Young/Call Me Maybe/Gangnam Style etc were released. 2013 so far is looking the same, I can't see something like 'Thrift Shop' or even 'Get Lucky' being massively remembered in a couple years time as neither are particularly anthemic, just mildly catchy.

I don't - to my relief - hear Katy Perry's 'I Kissed A Girl' much anymore, probably because it's been overshadowed by a ton of her other hits.

Well, I didn't really read the OP as asking songs that had been forgotten. I agree that songs like 'Love the Way You Lie' haven't been forgotten, most people would still remember it if they were asked about it, but it's not still held in high regard, it's not really talked about as a modern classic in the way you'd expect for a song that was the biggest-selling of a year. So even if it's not forgotten, it's still fair to say it's not stood the test of time that well imo.

And yes to 'I Kissed A Girl' -- it's probably only something like her 5th most highly-regarded single now, even 'Hot & Cold' seems to be more popular than it these days.
Eminem's Love The Way You Lie. Everyone was convinced that it would be played on the radios for a long time to come and... yeah.

I wasn't. Songs with rapping you hardly ever hear on the radio after they're popular. The main radio stations that play songs years after they were hits are adult contemporary ones like Heart FM, which don't play rapping. The stations that play rapping focus on current music. Songs like Lose Yourself are considered classics but I hear it like once a year on the radio, and it's usually not on a big station.

So you won't be hearing Thrift Shop on the radio anymore in 2015.

I know radio isn't definitive, but with the songs I listed, I genuinely have not heard them ANYWHERE, clubs or otherwise. Plus, they don't seem to hang around at the bottom end of the chart thanks to a price reduction or anything...obviously I know its different for everyone and all.

There's sometimes a song I haven't heard in ages that I think nobody really knows/remembers, but one day I hear it at a party or a club and everybody knows the words, which sometimes shocks me. Sometimes it happens even with songs from years ago that didn't chart that well. But at the end of the day, most people know thousands of songs, they don't just know the year-end top 10 from each year.

It depends on your lifestyle too. If you live in a big city you'll hear different music to what people in rural areas hear. And if you associate more with alpha male types you'll be hearing different music, and so on.

You have got to be joking.

Pretty much all XF winners songs and Comic Relief songs are barely remembered bar the odd stand out despite the absolutely massive sales (Amarillo comes to mind).

Flicking through the year end top 10s, I would say all of these are fairly forgotten despite big sales, I've certainly not heard them on the radio since:

Ozzy & Kelly Osborne - Changes

Frankee - f*** You Right Back

LMC vs U2 - Take Me To The Clouds Above

Will Smith - Switch

Infernal - From Paris to Berlin

Rihanna - SOS

Cascada - Everytime We Touch

Shayne Ward - No Promises

Sean Kingston - Beautiful Girls

Beyonce & Shakira - Beautiful Liar

Basshunter - Now You're Gone

Kid Rock - All Summer Long

Ting Tings - That's Not My Name

Tinchy Stryder feat. N-Dubz - Number 1

JLS - Beat Again

David Guetta feat. Kelly Rowland - When Love Takes Over

Black Eyed Peas - Meet Me Halfway

Bruno Mars - The Lazy Song

Aloe Blacc - I Need a Dollar

Agree with the few mentioned from 2010, I would also add Replay, Rude Boy & Dynamite from that year.

I disagree with that entire list, everything mentioend before you I agree with though

I disagree on all these songs that were mentioned:

Airplanes

California Gurls

Love The Way You Lie

Ridin' Solo (major WTF, I still hear this regularly and it almost re-entered the top 40 the other week)

Everytime We Touch (still hear this regularly, people remember it)

When Love Takes Over

Boom Boom Pow

Meet Me Halfway

I Need A Dollar (I still overhear people quote/sing this all the time)

Rude Boy

Poker Face

Mercy

Empire State Of Mind

I would agree on 'Nothin' On You' (I genuinely forgot this song existed :o), 'Run This Town' and 'Deja Vu' but I really think it's down to them being overshadowed by their follow-ups more than anything.

Looking at the biggest hits of this year so far, the ones that I think will be "remembered" (i.e. played on the radio regularly in future years) are:

2 - 2 - 576,200 - Justin Timberlake - Mirrors

3 - 3 - 552,200 - Pink ft Nate Ruess - Just Give Me A Reason

4 - 10 - 492,228 - Daft Punk ft Pharrell - Get Lucky

5 - 4 - 483,400 - Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble

7 - 6 - 448,200 - Bastille - Pompeii

8 - 7 - 437,800 - Bruno Mars - When I Was Your Man

9 - 8 - 416,600 - Rihanna - Stay

16 - 16 - 311,200 - Lumineers - Ho Hey

18 - 17 - 290,600 - Emeli Sande - Clown

And I think these you won't be hearing on the radio much in a few years:

1 - 1 - 615,200 - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz - Thrift Shop

6 - 5 - 467,600 - Will.i.Am ft Britney Spears - Scream & Shout

10 - 9 - 411,800 - One Direction - One Way Or Another

11 - 11 - 371,200 - Avicii vs Nicky Romero - I Could Be The One

12 - 12 - 344,200 - Disclosure - White Noise

13 - 19 - 327,400 - Rudimental ft Ella Eyre - Waiting All Night

14 - 13 - 318,400 - Calvin Harris ft Tinie Tempah - Drinking From The Bottle

15 - 14 - 316,200 - Saturdays - What About Us

17 - 15 - 305,400 - James Arthur - Impossible

19 - 21 - 282,600 - Duke Dumont ft AME - Need U (100%)

20 - 18 - 272,600 - Justin Timberlake ft Jay-Z - Suit & Tie

Other ones that sprung to mind are The Way I Are and 4 Minutes. I hardly ever hear those songs on the radio anymore (although I hear the former a lot in other places).

I agree with '4 Minutes'. Radio stations like Radio 2 and Heart FM are forever playing big Madonna classics, but '4 Minutes' always gets left out. Can't say I'm too surprised though, those two stations in particular probably won't play it due to the heavy Timbaland production and the R&B feel to it, and stations like Capital (I know they play mostly new stuff, but I've heard Akon's 'Beautiful', Justin Timberlake's 'Sexy Back' and some of Lady Gaga's singles from The Fame) won't play because it's Madonna and she's old. :P

From the list you gave of songs that probably won't be heard much in a few years time, I would considering ruling out 'Drinking From the Bottle' as it's Calvin Harris and I often hear 'I'm Not Alone' and 'Feel So Close' played lots, though it could go the same route as his early material or 'Let's Go' which aren't played much at all. Also 'Suit & Tie', I could see this being a popular play in a couple years time, there's just something about the track.

I admit some of them are pushing it, but would you really say Switch & From Paris To Berlin are that well remembered?

I sometimes find myself randomly singing "Switch! Eh, ye, eh, ye", although I can't remember the last time radio or TV played it, and I sometimes hear 'Paris to Berlin' on Clubland TV and I've remembered regardless any way. But this is just me so in general, yeah they may not be that well remembered, however I'm sure people will instant remember them as soon as they come on - everyone must remember the choruses when they come on, surely?

I don't get why Deja Vu is being brought up? I remember it being lucky to get to number 1 for some reason and it's not got an amazing chart run?

If it wasn't for those last 5 weeks it wouldn't look half as good, definitely wasn't massive? Or is it just me?

It's funny, because Capital did actually play 4 Minutes (and also Give It To Me and Celebration) back in 2008/2009. But the station has changed a lot since then really...

No, it was big, but I wouldn't say it was "massive" either. It's a brilliant song though (the original version)!
