Disagree strongly with 'Not Afraid', from the way people at my school STILL go on about it you'd think it was the single biggest hit ever.

It's really, really not.

It is.

It's the only song by her that had extensive media coverage, had controversy surrounding its release and is generally referenced a lot in popular culture. Katy has been referred to as the popstar who "kissed a girl and liked it". Regardless of what her actual biggest-selling hit is or how often you hear IKAG on the radio, it is definitely her signature hit because it is that memorable. 'Firework', while being more recent and selling a lot more than IKAG, has nothing infamous or memorable about it.

You say "Firework" to someone on the street and they'd assume you're on about bonfire night. If you said "I kissed a girl and I liked it" then they'd know the reference.

I've not seen anywhere or anyone refer to her as that since about 2009. Even Katy Perry herself has pretty much disowned that song  When she was asked about it a while back, she just sheepishly said "it's not one of my favourites". According to Wikipedia, she didn't perform it in her encore (which is what you'd expect for an artist's signature hit) on her last tour either.

Does 'Starstrukk' count as being 'massive'? If so, that

I'm also pretty sure 'Wild Ones' will be completely forgotten by the end of 2013 (if it isn't already)

Perhaps because the latter is far more obviously a reference to a song. If you want to compare 'I kissed a girl and I liked it' as a phrase it'd be fairer to compare it to 'baby you're a firework' which is just as recognisable if not more so.

Lets have a look at the iTunes top 1500 for tracks by Katy Perry:

529. Firework

607. E.T

652. Wide Awake

956. E.T (2nd version)

1004. Hot N Cold

1150. The One That Got Away

1276. Part of Me

1354. Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)

So I think that proves that I Kissed a...OH WAIT

I Kissed A Girl was the song that started it all for her, and its not totally forgotten, but its not aged well at all. Firework is a far more likely candidate for her signature hit. Its message, its hook, its pure pop feel...its got far more going for it, is very hard to dislike and its easy to see how its still on the radio these days. Its much more representative of her, and I think if you asked most people in the street, that would be the song that comes to mind (though I don't think its a modern classic I must admit, I don't think anything she's done has been, but that's a different discussion.)

The fact that E.T. is lower than Firework and has been performed somewhere (The Voice this weekend) is actually surprising!

oh whoops, didn't actually know that  not that it makes much of a difference.

If you gave people a list of Katy Perry singles and asked them to name the one they remember most, they'd probably say "Firework". If you asked someone to name a Katy Perry song, I reckon they'd be more likely to say "I Kissed A Girl".
I think "I Kissed A Girl" has aged in a similar way to Lady GaGa's "Just Dance". They were the big breakthrough songs that got them noticed and people were talking about them because of it, but they built on that and released songs that will be more remembered and played for years to come. People will probably mention these songs if you ask them because they were the songs that kicked them off, but I think people have new and better favourites now.
I remember when i saw the video for I Kissed A Girl for the first time, i needed a cold shower afterwards. The video certainly must have contributed to the worldwide success of the song.

I agree with this.

I haven't heard people talk about I Kissed A Girl since 2008, which might show that it was more of a cringey fad than a signature hit.

This is going back before my time a bit, but for something that was one of the biggest sellers of the year once, I never hear this anywhere:

#3 in 1991 and in the year top 10, but I don't think I heard it until about 2006 - by which time I'm pretty sure I'd heard every other yearly top 10 song of every other year of the 1990s! I guess its very of-its-time early 90s sound means it hasn't lasted as something like Bryan Adams or Whitney Houston has.
