67. FEEL THE BEAT- Darude (149,000)

http://thebeatblog.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Darude-Feel-The-Beat.jpg

YEAR: 2000

PEAK POSITION: 5

WKS ON CHART: 10

Getting his nickname from a party at school Darude is that rare thing- a Finnish popstar who finds success in the UK. A second hit single was released in the run up to Christmas 2000 and sold a very respectable 43k in its opening week to secure a top 5 placing.

66. MANCHILD- Neneh Cherry (153,000)

YEAR: 1989

Cherry’s second hit created a little bit of chart history in May 1989 when it made the top 10 simultaneously with Roxette’s “The Look” to become the first instance of 2 Swedish acts in the top 10 at the same time. It was co-written by Robert Del Naja who was a renowned graffiti artist in Bristol (and influence on Banksy) before going on to form Massive Attack.

65. GLORIOUS- Andreas Johnson (159,000)

YEAR: 2000

PEAK POSITION: 4

WKS ON CHART: 11

His only top 40 hit, Johnson exploded onto a rather dull millennium chart, rather unlucky not to make the top 3. It’s subsequently been used on a few adverts to keep its profile up, some have noted the rather suspicious similarity of this song (well the verse anyway) to Depeche Mode’s “Two Minute Warning”- judge for yourself.

Is THIS the first trip-hop hit?

It's one of my favourite 80s songs.

I actually prefer Feel The Beat to Sandstorm, love it, so pleased it went top five! Glorious lives up to its name, sublime. I LOVE Andreas Johnson, his post Glorious Swedish career (including 4 Melodifestivalen appearances) has been amazing.
Manchild! I taped that one off the radio when I was 13  By far the best Neneh Cherry track. I had no idea it was written by one of Massive Attack!
I can't wait for the next Darude song, it's one of my favourite dance songs of all time!

64. PJANOO- Eric Prydz (163,000)

http://www.aaeg.com/store/images/uploads/Eric_Prydz_Pjanoo.jpg

YEAR: 2008

PEAK POSITION: 2

WKS ON CHART: 13

Dating back to 1996 this was a song that Prydz forgot all about until years later when DJ-ing, used extensively by Radio 1 to promote its “Big Weekend” series it debuted at No 2 in August 2008 behind Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl”. It owes a whole lot of thanks to an 80s tune (well this is Prydz after all) in this case Patrice Rushen’s “I Was Tired Of Being Alone” which though not sampled here it is certainly “influencing” Prydz.

63. DANCING QUEEN- Abba (167,000)

YEAR: 1992

Originally entitled “Boogaloo” it was of course a No 1 track for the band in 1976 (and also their sole US chart topper) which was re-released in 1992 to promote the “Gold-Greatest hits” album when it went top 20 here again. Truth is though that it’s here on the basis of download sales alone (it’s original 70s sales of course not being eligible for this rundown) and is the one of only two tracks on the rundown to have only 5 charted weeks in the top 75.

62. ALWAYS HAVE, ALWAYS WILL- Ace Of Base (167,000)

YEAR: 1998

PEAK POSITION: 12

Motown Pastiche at Christmas time? Look no further than this offering from Ace Of Base from Christmas 1998 which became the last of ten top 20 hits for them and went by the name of “Killer On The Rampage” until the record company made them re-write it for the album into this cheerful ditty.

Very good selections as usual. :D "Always Have, Always Will" I always thought was underrated and should have been as big as "Life Is A Flower".
Always Have, Always Will is the first single I ever bought (it was on cassette). I started as I meant to go on with my music tastes

Absolutely adore "Manchild" and of course "Pjanoo" (the only house track of 2008 worth bothering with).

I cannot bloody stand "Glorious" though. Like "Save Tonight", it's one of those yucky radio-friendly guitar pop songs that were always on local radio stations in the late 90s.

Pjanoo  Massive tune, somehow I never heard it back in 08' but when I got into dance music properly this was a standout from Eric's collection.

61. THE LOOK- Roxette (168,000)

http://roxdisco.narod.ru/picts/covers/the_look.jpg

YEAR: 1989/95

PEAK POSITION: 7

WKS ON CHART: 13

Topping the charts in the US with this track opened the UK market to Roxette. It was spread by a student returning to America who handed the tape to a local DJ who started to play it and it gained popularity throughout early 89. A remix version was issued in 95 to promote a new GH set but it only just scraped the top 30.

60.LISTEN TO YOUR HEART- Roxette (170,000)

http://roxdisco.narod.ru/picts/covers/listen.jpg

YEAR: 1989/90

PEAK POSITION: 6

WKS ON CHART: 12

Creating pop history in November 1989 this became the first US No 1 single not to be released on 7” vinyl (the UK would have to wait another 5 years for that honour) this was a second American chart topper that established them as a big player. Again the UK were yet to be convinced sending the song to No 62, but after the success of “It Must Have Been Love” it was given another chance and was finally rewarded with a top 10 placing.

59. MY FAVOURITE GAME- The Cardigans (171,000)

YEAR: 1998

PEAK POSITION: 14

WKS ON CHART: 18

First single from the “Gran Turismo” album (yes it was named as a homage to the Playstation game) the track and accompanying video caused a slight stir when it was released for its ending. MTV apparently only played the edited version after some complaints were received, but in the charts of 1998 it proved rather a long stayer spending 9 wks in the top 40 unusual for a song that never went top 10.
