This is a fabulous album, and it doesn't deserve to underperform. :( - Good that she just made the top 10 though. I think the main problem was promotion, and although the release strategy and the Froots of the month are good for fans, most casual listeners might have missed new songs/the album all together. Electra Heart got to #1 (on fairly low sales but even so) but 'Primadonna', I'd say, was well known at the time and no doubt helped the album. I'm pretty sure 'I'm A Ruin' could've easily been a top 20 hit.

For the future? It's not impossible for Marina to be commercially successful again if she wants - I get the impression that she's just happy to be making music at the moment. She's the kind of artist who will have a strong fanbase for many years to come, even if albums didn't take off too well, commercially. She just needs to get back into the studio, write some new/catchy/relevant hooks (like Savages for example) and step up the promotion for the next era.

She's always stuck me as the person who wants commercial success and even values her work based on how it performs.

Well every artist values commercial success to some extent. But she said it herself that the whole point of Froot being released like this was so that she didn't have to depend on Airplay and hit singles. She called it her best work she's done out of the three so I don't think that's the case.

10.4k sold in first week. I thought she would have been able to at least match Rebecca Ferguson's 14k.

The Family Jewels now 195,358

Electra Heart now 89,676

If this era does ever become a bit more mainstream and some hype is generated, I can see Electra Heart going gold eventually.

Well every artist values commercial success to some extent.

All artists need some sort of commercial success to pay for their work, simple as that. They're not that different from the Average Joe in that way - if it doesn't pay they just can't keep on releasing.

Of course "artistic integrity" gets thrown around but no one's here for that, boo boo. The good news is that she's projected to sell around 40k in the US, which isn't bad for an artist of her status there. :arrr:

40K wow, that's amazing for her! :o

From how I see it, she really wanted success with the first two albums but, with this album, she's just seeing any success as an additional benefit to doing what she wants to do. She's built up a large fanbase all across the world now so I think she feels a bit more free. I think she views it that, if she couldn't achieve mainstream success by writing the big pop album with big name producers, then she's not going to achieve that big success and so she may as well focus on the music rather than success.

40K wow, that's amazing for her! :o

45-50k in the US is the latest prediction, but that's including streaming. :arrr:

It would be amazing sales for her there and could possibly fund another album.

The album is also holding up really well in the US, still #14 where-as it's like #50 here (ouch). And she has big promo in America this week, so could actually end up doing a second week of decent sales over there.

It's also worth mentioning that this is her most critically acclaimed album to date, which I'm sure she's happy about since it's her most personal album, and the one she's had most control in making.

I know I'm a big fan but I openly admitted that Electra Heart was flawed and disappointing upon its release, I'm always ready to critique my favs if I feel the need. But FROOT is genuinely the best album of the year (and possibly last year) for me.

Is it critically acclaimed? I haven't seen many reviews yet.

I've delighted that The Family Jewels has sold that well.

Yeah it's had lots of 4 and 5 star reviews. Guardian gave it 4 stars and featured it as their 'album you need to listen to this week'

Yeah, it's her best received album yet - it's currently standing at 78 on Metacritic whilst TFJ is 68 and Electra Heart is 57 (both criminally underrated).

Also, I found this app that ranks all your favourite Marina songs: http://jesseepinkman.tumblr.com/marianasong The difficulty in choosing between two songs really does highlight how glorious her discography really is.

Pretty accurate for the most part!

Shame they don't have the other Froots on there, as they'd be higher than loads of those tracks.

Thanks Joe. My God, reviews are getting incredibly short these days.

It is pretty accurate, apart from including Hermit the Frog twice. I'd only swap Guilty with Mowgli's Road.

They should update this with FROOT !
