July 10, 201313 yr Midweek Charts: Jay-Z to score first UK No 1 Paul Willams Jay-Z is heading for his first UK No1 album as Robin Thicke looks to return to the top of the singles chart. The rapper's newly-issued Roc Nation/Virgin EMI album Magna Carta Holy Grail is presently outselling the rest of the top five put together, according to Official Charts Company data, to put it on course to top the artist albums countdown this Sunday. The album is also being made available for free to the first 1 million users of a Samsung Galaxy app, although any copies retrieved this way will not be counted towards its chart sales. That exclusion will not prevent it becoming Jay-Z first UK chart-topper, beating his previous peak of 3 achieved with 2011's Watch The Throne with Kanye West, while in his own right he went as high as 4 with The Blueprint 4 in 2009. He leads a very quiet albums market with only one other brand new album among the Top 40 positions so far this week - Epic act Ciara's self-titled new set at 35 - while on singles Robin Thicke is aiming to become the first act this year to go back to No 1. Leading the list previously for four weeks, his Interscope/Polydor-issued Blurred Lines with TI and Pharrell Williams presently has a narrow lead at No 1 of about 5% over Island act John Newman's Love Me Again, which debuted at the top last Sunday but drops to 2 in the midweeks. The last single to return to No 1 was Syco act James Arthur's Impossible whose three-week chart-topping run was interrupted by the Justice Collective's charity cover of He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother last December. Thicke and Newman face competition from two strongly-performing brand new releases, both of which are among the week so far's five biggest sellers. At 3 is the Virgin-issued Reload by Swedish House Mafia's Sebastian Ingrosso with Australian producer Tommy Trash and John Martin, while Global Talent/Polydor's are poised for a fourth Top 10 single with Brokenhearted featuring B.o.B arriving at 4. It is taken from a new version of their debut album Chapman Square. The rest of the Top 10 at this stage of the week is either heading down or not moving. Atlantic act Icona Pop's former No 1 I Love It featuring Charli XCX drops 3-5, will.i.am's Interscope/Polydor single Bang Bang is down 4-6, Naughty Boy's Virgin title La La La with Sam Smith declines 5-7, Nettwerk's Passenger eases 7-8 with Let Her Go as Warner Bros's Jason Derulo loses a place to 9 with The Other Side and Daft Punk's Columbia track Get Lucky with Pharrell Williams holds at 10. Australian Iggy Azalea is a few hundred sales short at present of the Top 10 with her Mercury/Virgin EMI track Bounce new at 11, while Rinse/Columbia's Katy B will score her first Top 40 hit since 2011 with What Love Is Made Of currently new at 20. Grime act Sneakbo's Ring A Ling on the Play Hard label is new at 24, while Holy Grail, off Jay-Zs new album and featuring Justin Timberlake, turns up in 27th place. Back on the artist albums chart and Mumford & Sons' Gentlemen Of The Road/Islad album Babel suffers a 56% dip in sales having returned to the top last weekend following their televised Glastonbury headline performance. As a result it drops to 4 on Sales Flashes. Michael Buble's Reprise/Warner Bros set To Be Loved is also hit by a heavy sales fall - one of 48% - but it manages to hold on to 2 in what is a very tight race below No 1 with positions 2 to 4 separated by just a few hundred sales. Among that crowd, Passenger's Nettwerk album All The Little LIghts lifts 7-3 as Tom Odell's Columbia debut Long Way Down drops 5-6. Rod Stewart's Capitol/Decca Time drops 5-6 but should benefit for the rest of the week from a BBC One documentary screened on Tuesday night, while Jake Bugg's eponymous Mercury/Virgin EMI album is down 4-7, Rudimental's Asylum/Atlantic debut Home is up 9-8 and Atlantic act Bruno Mars gains a place to 9 with Unorthodox Jukebox. Epic signing Olly Murs rounds off the Top 10, aflling 8-10 with Right Place Right Time.
