Some inclusions will be potentially controversial, as it's a virtually impossible proposition to come up with a definition of dance that will satisfy everyone. Thanks to Music Week, Andy, Fiesta, Gezza, Mart!n, and ManicKangeroo, amongst others for the sales figures.

Which person in their right mind would define JOHN NEWMAN as dance.

(very good effort though x)

Very interesting to see those sales but I do think the inclusion of Aqua is what I'd consider controversial as I'd say that's more pop than dance in terms of my definition of dance music.

Some classics in there, especially Spiller, Shanks and Bigfoot and Sash!

Which person in their right mind would define JOHN NEWMAN as dance.

Soul/dance crossover hit. John Legend, Robin Thicke and Cee-Lo Green could never.

I wouldn't have included Earthquake or R.I.P either. Great list though. Barbie Girl dominating.

 I was quite dubious about including it, but some people actually do consider it to fall somewhere in the dance spectrum.

Yeah they can be classified either as pop or dance, either way novelty and cheese. The likes of Aqua, Cartoons, Vengaboys, Whigfield, etc can be classified as dance by Bubblegum Dance -> Eurodance -> Hi-NRG -> Dance.

I wouldn't have included Earthquake or R.I.P either.

Definitely electro/grime/dub-step influences there, but I agree definitely not clear cut.

Madonna's 'American Pie' and 'Frozen' stuck out to me, but I suppose they do have some dance elements, just not the same sort of dance as Avicii or whatnot.
Simply Red's 'Fairground' is the one that stuck out the most to me, I would have never considered that as dance, but can see why people might. Interesting list though!

Very doubtful that this is dance.

Same goes to "American Pie".

Could never be considered dance either?

You might as well also consider All Saints' "Pure Shores" dance because it has the same production from William Orbit as the two Madonna songs have.

It's trip-hop which is related to electronica (source Wikipedia), so it could be considered dance technically.

You had to jump through two hoops to get Frozen to be a dance song, there - Bre :D

First that trip-hop is electronica - which it sometime's isn't. And secondly that electronica means dance.

Most pop songs in the period in question are electronic.

I can't see Frozen ever being played at the peak of a night in a club. More likely in a chill-out part.

It's clearly not dance.

You just need to BELIEVE, Tony.

Sorry. I was too busy throwing shapes to Frozen to notice your reply. :D

The OCC have classified Madonna's Frozen, Justify My Love, Ray Of Light, etc as dance which is why I've included them here.

In the case of Fairground by Simply Red it's heavily based upon The Good Men's (aka Chocolate Puma aka Zki & Dobre) 1993 #5 house track Give It Up.

The OCC have classified Madonna's Frozen, Justify My Love, Ray Of Light, etc as dance which is why I've included them here.

'Justify My Love' seems even more strange than 'Frozen'! It's classed as "trip-hop" on Wikipedia, which is a sub-sub-genre of electronic music apparently. It's pushing the definition of "dance" very very widely. I can see why 'Ray of Light' is there though, that is more obvious.
