Posted July 26, 201311 yr I think we're possibly pushing it now for these kind of threads, but I'm going to plough on ahead anyway. I don't really mean in a different age in the sense of songs that were ahead of their time or outdated in terms of their sound - moreso that their release strategy would have worked better years earlier or later. I thought about it with this in mind (mainly just as an excuse to post it): nzQWmAwNNCw Obviously it did hugely well anyway, but can you imagine the chart run of "I'll Be There For You" in the download era? We probably still wouldn't be rid of it. On the flipside, pretty much any post-album single released by a middling fanbase act would have charted twice as highly ten or twenty years ago.
July 26, 201311 yr The Noisettes - Never Forget You and Paloma Faith - New York came just as the soul-pop revival had run out of steam chart-wise, which I always thought was a massive shame. I reckon they'd have been a fair bit more successful, say, a year or so before.
July 26, 201311 yr We had the exact same thread a few weeks ago... Or did we? I can't remember. These threads are getting more tiring than the rates. Edited July 26, 201311 yr by ~ * G R I F F * ~

July 26, 201311 yr That's because you can't read. I got a little confused too actually, do you mean, for example, had a 4th single from an album been released as the lead single, it would have performed much better than it did? Edited July 26, 201311 yr by liamk97
July 26, 201311 yr Author I got a little confused too actually, do you mean, for example, had a 4th single from an album been released as the lead single, it would have performed much better than it did? Or songs on adverts that were deleted as a CD that could have sold twice as much these days.
July 26, 201311 yr Foals - 'My Number' would've had a much higher chart peak had it been released in 2006-07
July 26, 201311 yr Holly Valance - State of Mind. Ahead of its time in 2003. Would have been huge in 2009/2010.
July 26, 201311 yr I think all indie/rock tracks that just about scraped the top 40 from 2010 onwards would've fared far better in the guitar friendly environment of 2006/07. The Vaccines in particular come to mind, they've done very well to get four top 40 hits and they could've well been getting top 20 hits a'la the likes of the Pigeon Detectives (remember them?) And of course, Crazy by Gnarls Barkley - it could've had a very strong chart run that wasn't cut off so suddenly had it been released a mere year later.

July 26, 201311 yr I think this song would have been huge if released during Sophie's "Read My Lips" peak: L5EsiEDMWLc Kylie's "The One" and "Get Outta My Way" would have been far bigger if released in 2000-2002.
July 26, 201311 yr Kylie's "The One" and "Get Outta My Way" would have been far bigger if released in 2000-2002. Perhaps 'The One' could have been a little bigger if released in 2010/11 as well, just for the fact it was a download-only release and back in 2008, physicals still had a big part in the charts.
July 26, 201311 yr Agreed that The Vaccines would have been top 10 staples in about 2006, 'If You Wanna' going top 5. 'Seven Nation Army' by the White Stripes would have had a Chasing Cars-like run if released now. Its 7-14-34-58 run at the time is ridiculously brief, although to be fair most people I know in 2003 were illegally downloading mp3s instead of buying the CDs - that's how I got my copy at the time! Thank goodness for iTunes.

July 27, 201311 yr Flo Rida - Elevator In 2012 this would have been a certain top 10, maybe even a number 1.
July 27, 201311 yr Yeah, I would've always imagined 'I'll Be There For You' would've been a much bigger hit than it was. I agree, if downloads (and the current chart "climate") had existed then it probably would've been in the charts continuously for Friends' entire 10-year run.

That's a good point - was the song in the top 1000 during the E4 repeats era do you know?
