Last Friday saw the launch of new Irish reality TV show 'The Hit'. Apparently there has been massive interest in the show from the UK, US and around the world. So it could be appearing on a screen near you in the near future.

For those who don't know anything about the series, here's a quick synopsis:

The series is filmed live in front of a live audience at Dublin's O2 Arena, it's sort of an X Factor/The Voice style show for songwriters.

Round 1: Room Chase (pre-recorded)

Each week six amateur songwriters enter individual pods. Two established artists then begin a battle to choose two songs from the six songs. They can enter any room as long as their opponent is not in it. If they like the song they press a button outside the pod to lock it in. The catch is, if they pick a song too early they risk missing out on another potential song. Also if an artist likes a song but doesn't want to lock it in immediately they risk losing it to their apposing singer.

Each singer picks two songs each. Meaning two of the original six songwriters are eliminated.

*The artists then go to a recording studio with both their chosen songwriters where they get to work on recording their future single*

Round 2: Live Show

Both artists come out with their chosen songwriters. The artist then performs their favoured of the two songs they chose. This song will be their next single.

Then, both artists' songs are released on iTunes. At the ended of the week the highest charting song in the official chart advances to the final. These rounds continue for fice weeks meaning there will be five song in the grand finale which takes place in the sixth week.

Still following? Good! I know it may sound complicated, but it's so much more understandable when watching. It's also interesting to follow the chart every week to see which songs are doing well and which aren't.

I've created this thread to follow the chart positions of the songs and to discuss the songs. Hopefully some of you will be interested!

That show made me want to die. Never again
I don't know if this would be a great format, I'm sure we'd just have ex members of Westlife or one hit wonders from the 80s rather than the likes of Rihanna, Jessie J, Emeli Sandé etc.

I think if it was pitched to artists in a sort of judging role way, almost like the coaches on The Voice, it could work. Granted you're not going to get those who have records out at the moment or have forthcoming albums due soon, but I could definitely see artists like Will Young, Natasha Bedingfield, Duffy, Leona Lewis, Rod Stewart, Stereophonics, etc. taking part.

i.e. Artists who are slightly off the radar, but not so off the radar that it's unfathomable that they'd take part.

I'm just viewing it as a song contest. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the two songs that came from it last week!

I wouldn't be so sure about her! :o

Kink etc...

I had to turn this off after about ten minutes. I couldn't grasp the format at all. I also have no idea why they're renting out the entire O2 every Friday night when there's only an audience of about 500 people.

The first week saw 90's rockers, The Stunning go up against critically acclaimed Choice Music Prize winning (Irish equivalent to the Mercury Prize), Julie Feeney.

The Stunning peaked #6 on iTunes during the week. Julie fared less well only managing #24. It'll be interesting to see their official chart positions, but I think it's safe to say The Stunning are definitely advancing!
Gave this another shot last night. The song Ryan O'Shaughnessy chose was actually really good, as was his performance and his take on it. Nice to see it doing quite well on iTunes.

Kink etc...

I was waiting for someone to say that

The Stunning entered the official Irish chart at #6 beating Julie Feeney who reached #9. So they advance to the final.

Really interesting final positions considering Julie Feeney only peaked at #24 on iTunes. It shows that a lot of viewers must have used the text vote format to purchase the song.

On a side note they're also the only two Irish artists in the top 30 this week, their nearest rival is Kodaline at #33. So, if anything is coming from the show at least it's giving an outlet for Irish music to appear in the charts.
