Posted August 25, 200620 yr New entries storm US Billboard chart Source: Music Week For only the third time ever in 61 years of chart history, and the second time this year, the top five albums in America are all new entries. The Disney soundtrack Cheetah Girls 2 takes fifth slot, while female R&B quartet Cherish are number four with Underappreciated, country star Trace Adkins debuts at three with Dangerous Man and hip-hop hero Lyfe Jennings is runner-up with The Phoenix. But topping them all, with a stellar sale of 346,000, Back To Basics enjoyed the best first week tally of Christina Aguilera’s career. Her second number one album, following her eponymous 1999 debut, it beats by 16,000 her previous best first week tally, set by her last studio set, Stripped, when it debuted and peaked at number two in 2002. The rash of new entries at the top of the chart helped album sales improve 2.6% week-on-week but they were still 7% behind the comparable week of 2006, a performance which exactly replicates their year-to-date shortfall. Corinne Bailey Rae’s self-titled debut is the highest charting album by a UK act for the seventh week in a row, and rebounds a little from recent losses, climbing 34-32, as single Put Your Records On moves 84-80. KT Tunstall does likewise, rallying 47-44 with Eye To The Telescope, thanks primarily to first single Black Horse & The Cherry Tree, which is stuck at number 30 on the Hot 100, and, more impressively, racks up its 10th straight week at number one on the Adult Top 40 chart. Follow-up Suddenly I See, which dipped prematurely from its peak last week, falling 71-89, continues to falter, and is now number 93. Snow Patrol’s Eyes Open album improves for the fourth week in a row. Moving 75-60-55-53-45, it too is benefiting from the success of a single, Chasing Cars, which jumps 31-26 on the Hot 100 this week. Meanwhile, with Fergie’s London Bridge selling more than 100,000 downloads for the second week in a row, it remains firmly lodged atop the Hot 100, increasing its lead over Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy, which is runner-up for the seventh week in a row. Top debut of the week comes from new girl group Danity Kane, whose introductory single Show Stopper enters at number 17. The group, put together in the latest series of Making The Band, aren’t getting much airplay for the track, which drew most of its Hot 100 points from sales of 55,765 downloads, which also earn it fifth slot on the Digital Singles chart.
