I can safely say this has been her worst era ever. This song wasn't album material, let alone single-worthy.

I actually like it, it's one of the few good songs on Unapologetic. She messed the era up when she released the awful Pour It Up (and took 5 months to actually release the video) and then Right Now.

Jump or Love Without Tragedy would've smashed during the summer and keep the interest up.

I wonder why this era has been managed so awfully. She usually handles the eras pretty well regarding singles that are released and their timing.
LOL, I agree the album is full of flaws, but in chart terms she seemed to be untouchable (I mean, Take A Bow was a No.1).
She usually has at least one misfire per era. Rated R had 'Rockstar 101', LOUD... didn't really have one because it was LOUD, Talk That Talk had the title track and 'You Da One' to an extent, while both 'Pour It Up' and 'Right Now' were terribly done. I really think 'What Now' would have done much better if they hadn't killed all momentum before its release.

I think she's just been lax because her star power is going to survive with 2 big hits and then leaving it for a year (which is something she hasn't done for a long while). It is in some ways a lovely album but it's not full of singles and chart smashes at all. I never would have thought What Now would have worked as a single as much as I love the song; it turned out to be the most well-handled post-album single, even if that's not saying much as Pour It Up and Right Now were far too far towards the different directions of urban/dance to work long-term and Right Now at least is very outdated. Both risky choices that backfired.

She can still smash if she has the right material so I hope that's what this break is going to do, bring up more of that.

This being a single has really made me love it and appreciate it more, the way it builds up to that final chorus is amazing.

Hey! No need for the TAB shade!

I agree with Jack, this getting single treatment made me enjoy the song a lot more. I love the video too.

This album is FULL of gems, and is probably one of my faves from her tbh. It's not got the obvious chart smashes of all of the previous albums, but I really love 'Unapologetic'.

I listened to the lyrics carefully when I heard it again the other day, is this song about experiencing a really bad trip?

She confirmed in a interview a while back that it is about coping with depression and not knowing what to feel.
