It's about time there was a proper gay rights docu made by a gay man and focusing on gay rights. Will catch it later this week.

I have been rewatching Andrew Marr's 'The Making of Modern Britain'. I find him to be excellent orator and it's nice to see an emphasis placed on early 20th century politics and Prime Ministers such as Asquith, Balfour and Lloydd George.

That said, it's a bit shocking how INEFFECTIVE and HAPHAZARD it all was.

I've been watching Rageh Omar's 'The Ottoman Empire: Europe's Muslim Rulers' the last couple of weeks, very informative stuff (probably because that isn't something I've ever really read anything about before beyond the basic details).
I've been watching the 4 part nature series on BBC1 The Great British Year, some beautiful photography.

MY AREA OF HISTORY

He is good, though it's a pity there is no-one of an academic background able to write their own programme. Evidently not an idiosyncratic woman available or able.

I've been enjoying Helen Castor's 'Medieval Births, Deaths, Marriages' or whatever it's called. She is a bit DOUR but it goes with the subject matter. V. informative.

Okay, recently got REALLY interested in nature documentaries. Currently watching BBC's Life, How To Grow A Planet and World's Deadliest Animals. Everything has been SO fascinating so far. Have How Do They Do It downloaded as well~

Does 'Blackfish' count as a documentary? I watched that recently and it has changed my entire opinion on SeaLife. Pretty chilling too

A UK documentary I liked was one about the Catacombs of Paris and it's history. A very scary place to go to. 400 miles of tunnels underneath Paris and if you get lost, there's literally no one to help you

I sometimes watch Who Do You Think You Are, depending on the subject. Last night's with Brian Blessed was particularly good. You may need a hanky at the ready if you watch it.

really enjoying 'the beauty of anatomy' on bbc four at the moment. annoyed it's in 5x 30 minute episode form (perhaps they assumed people might be repulsed by such a top in 3x 1 hour episode forms) but it is remarkably interesting and niche. along the lines of the history i've been doing as part of my degree...

I've been enjoying Sue Perkins' Michael Palin style series on the Mekong. It helps that I've visited all the countries she has been to so far so that adds an extra element of interest for me. However, having seen this series, I would almost certainly watch a follow-up regardless of where it is. I particularly like the way that she has been open about how the visit has made her challenge her beliefs. She has also not been afraid to voice her disapproval of some practices although that has been away from people who might be offended by her views.

One disappointment this week was that there was only a brief mention of the way Laos was affected by the Vietnam War. There was no mention of the fact that, for a time, the Americans made Laos the most bombed nation on Earth despite the fact that the country wasn't involved in the war.

(We even got a soggy bottom in this week's instalment)

I've set up a series link. I really must get round to reading the books some time. I've read some of her early work but not Wolf Hall / Bring Up The Bodies.
