September 27, 201311 yr All I can say is thank god "Take That" reformed or the cringy and dismal One Direction would be so undeservingly top of the boyband singles. Well if they'd sold the most, that would certainly make them deserving. :D
September 27, 201311 yr A portion of those sales for 'Rule the World' will probably just be down to the endless amount of times it's been used/performed on The X Factor and other talent shows. At least if it were to be One Direction they wouldn't have achieved it by depending on repetitive use on said show(s).

I get that you're trying to defend 1D and I'm all for that but WMYB has also been performed on many shows since its release, by 1D or by others...
September 27, 201311 yr I get that you're trying to defend 1D and I'm all for that but WMYB has also been performed on many shows since its release, by 1D or by others... Of course it has been used as background music on plenty occasions, and was the basis for this year's promo advert, but I can't say it's been performed by any of the contestants and had an effect on sales (or did they have a group performance of it once, I can't remember?), but not the extremes that 'Rule the World' has, surely... Can already think of Ella Henderson and Stacey Solomon off the top of my head who have performed it during live shows, and it's probably been used on many occasions as background music in both VTs and auditions (not that The X Factor is the only thing it has been used on; but the most prime example I think).
September 27, 201311 yr Author Can't believe McFly's first two singles don't feature in the Top 50 - I know 'Five Colours' and 'Obviously' were both released during a low sales period but both were reasonably big Number 1 singles so I find it hard to believe that they sold less than 185k! As of November 2012: 1. All About You - Chart peak: 1 Sales: 463,000 2. Shine A Light - Chart peak: 4 Sales: 341,000 3. 5 Colours in her Hair - Chart peak: 1 Sales: 192,000 4. Obviously - Chart peak: 1 Sales: 165,000 5. Star Girl - Chart peak: 1 Sales: 153,000 6. Don't Stop Me Now/Please Please - Chart peak: 1 Sales: 115,000 7. Party Girl - Chart peak: 6 Sales: 105,000 8. I'll Be OK - Chart peak: 6 Sales: 102,000 9. The Heart That Never Lies - Chart peak: 3 Sales: 91,000 10. Lies - Chart peak: 4 Sales: 86,000 http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/news/a43...s-revealed.html They overlooked '5 Colours'. :o However, it was also pointed out to me on another forum that Backstreet Boys - 'Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely' should be on the list - it had sold 197,000 by the end of 2000, and was also certified Silver. So it seems Backstreet Boys should really be towards the bottom of the Top 50, then McFly at #51 and Busted at #52.

On the topic of McFly, what are Love Is Easy's estimated sales to date? Edited September 27, 201311 yr by Calum Sandé

September 28, 201311 yr Didn't realise Shine had sold that much, early 2007 was such a poor time for singles sales. Glad to see The Flood has comfortably outsold Greatest Day, it really should have been a #1, whereas the latter should definitely not have been! Agreed.
September 28, 201311 yr Well if they'd sold the most, that would certainly make them deserving. :D it doesn't make it a deserving winner if its not a very good song in the first place though. Rule the world is a classic song which will be remembered in years to come.
September 28, 201311 yr Better than Westlife! I actually prefer Westlife. At least they had decent voices !
September 28, 201311 yr I never understand the concept of "deserving" a number 1 single. It's not that it's worth very much. Most of the greatest bands that ever existed never had a number 1 single. To somehow deserve something that is held by such visionaries as Peter Andre, DJ Caspar and Sam and Mark (just to pick on 2004) is an inflated value.

Well there are certainly a lot of songs which sell well but don't deserve to be successful. 1D are a band which are a classic example of this. They get an awful lot of media attention, yet their songs are very average at best and they don't write or produce any of their material. In contrast, there are other artists like Lawson who write their own songs and play instruments but yet they don't seem to do as well yet their music is miles ahead of their competitors. Take That's rule the world is a deserving winner on this list. It was written by the band and has broad appeal and is brilliantly produced and will be remembered as a classic hit in years to come.
September 29, 201311 yr I didn't see 'Higher' by The Saturdays in there. Cool & interesting list though!
September 29, 201311 yr I actually prefer Westlife. At least they had decent voices ! Basically a cover band with 0 personality and no redeeming features and they thought they could match the Spice Girls!
September 29, 201311 yr 1,359 people have downloaded Overload by Sugababes so far this year! I was one of them
