October 4, 201311 yr Well TO BE HONEST a lot of young naive impressionable girls might actually not understand true intentions behind Miley's actions and interpret them literally, i.e. it's fun getting naked in public, dressing slutty every once in a while etc. But that's parents' job to explain their children what's wrong and what's right. So many worse things get shown on TV/in music videos these days as well so it's a bit silly to gang up on Miley. Overall I think what Miley has been doing so far is pretty damn smart. Especially now that I know the album is really really good.
October 4, 201311 yr https://twitter.com/MileyCyrus/statuses/385794622641160193 :/ :/ :/ :/ I mean I don't think the original letter was needed in my opinion, but seriously, Miley can be such a c**t. Edited October 4, 201311 yr by Tommy G
October 4, 201311 yr Well there goes my respect for Miley in regards to this issue. She could have made a simple response/argument back but to attack someone and draw light to their previous mental health issues to discredit them in an argument is utterly abhorrent and highlights Miley's ignorance. You never ever go after someone on the basis of their mental health, it's one of the lowest blows you can give. Those tweets of Sinead that Miley posted touch a nerve; they don't discredit Sinead's right to an opinion on the Miley-express, they show a woman who, at one time, was evidently in a very dark, horrible place. Somewhere NOBODY would want to be. The tweets make me feel for her. O'Connor offered a platform for Miley to 'defend' her actions, after all she was presenting the views of many out of there. She could have given a reasoned, thought out retort instead she just shows arrogance and malice.
October 4, 201311 yr Sinead's response: ANOTHER OPEN LETTER TO MILEY CYRUS Miley… Really? Who the f*** is advising you? Because taking me on is even more f***in’ stupid than behaving like a prostitute and calling it feminism. You have posted today tweets of mine which are two years old, which were posted by me when I was unwell and seeking help so as to make them look like they are recent. In doing so you mock myself and Amanda Bynes for having suffered with mental health issues and for having sought help. I mean really really… who advises you? have you any idea how stupid and dangerous it is to mock people for suffering illness? You will yourself one day suffer such illness, that is without doubt. The course you have set yourself upon can only end in that, trust me. I am staggered that any 20 yr old woman of the 21st century could behave in such a dangerous and irresponsible manner as to not only send the signal to young women that its ok to act like prostitutes but also to the signal that those who have suffered or do suffer mental health problems are to be mocked and have their opinions invalidated. Have you no sense of danger at all? or responsibility? Remove your tweets immediately or you will hear from my lawyers. I am certain you will be hearing from all manner of mental health advocacy groups also. It is not acceptable to mock any person for having suffered. It is most unbecoming of you to respond in such a fashion to someone who expressed care for you. And worse that you are such an anti-female tool of the anti-female music industry. I hope that you will apologise to Amanda Bynes and to any person who has been wounded by your mockery of those who have suffered. And I hope that you will wake up and understand that you in fact are a danger to women. Furthermore you posted a photo of me tearing the pope’s photo .. as if to imply insanity.. by doing so all you have achieved is to expose your staggering ignorance. I suggest you read The Philadelphia Report, The Boston Report, all the reports which will illuminate for you why that action of mine remains sane and valid. By mocking it you mock every child who suffered sexual abuse at the hands of priests and had it covered by the Vatican. You could really do with educating yourself, that is if you’re not too busy getting your tits out to read. Whilst I don't agree with everything (the feminist hyperbolic rhetoric) she makes some very honest points...
October 4, 201311 yr She's just being incredibly immature and nasty now... As the entire Internet aside from deluded Miley stans will say, that's such a low blow and very very defensive! Whilst I didn't agree with Sinead's letter and don't agree with the majority of OTT reactions towards Miley's new sexualised image, I agree even less with using a serious mental health issue to discredit (or at least weakly attempt to discredit) someone who's just saying what a lot of people watching Miley are saying, just in a more extreme way than most. And she can't go digging through everyone's pasts to find things to use in a horrible way like that...
October 4, 201311 yr Miley made a mistake with that mockery of Sinead's previous mental health issues. She was no doubt angry or defensive but it doesn't excuse it. She should apologise, publicly and privately, and then move on before the controversy over this starts to overshadow the excellent album she's about to release.
October 4, 201311 yr Of course, Sinead never had the looks to be exploited like that... ;) Good to know we're still in the 1880s. I don't see the issue with Sinead making this letter public - she's trying to raise awareness of an issue she feels is relevant. To single out Miley isn't necessarily fair but she's the most obvious current example and the way Miley reacted was appalling.
October 4, 201311 yr Author Yeah basically, THIS: She's just being incredibly immature and nasty now... October 4, 201311 yr Sinéad was more-or-less a hate figure after her SNL and Madison Square Garden performances for merely stating the truth so she knows what it's like to be kicked down from the top. I'm not a fan of either of them, but Sinéad has been where Miley will most likely be at some stage so I think it's only natural for her to be concerned. I really HATE $l*t shaming and I honestly don't know why there is such commotion over the VMA performance or the Terry Richardson photographs (if it was a guy showing his nipples/boy bits then people would be like "more plz :kink:") but Miley needs to make sure she's in control of both herself and the situation she's creating. There's nothing wrong with creating a new image and embracing your sexuality, but just don't act like a dickhead when people try to point out that it can end badly and that most people in the industry only encourage you to do it because they'll make money from it. Responding like that to an open letter that was clearly written with good intentions is really disappointing because I was rooting for her even though I'm far from being a fan.
October 4, 201311 yr LMAO. All this over reaction towards Miley is getting boring now. People jumping on bandwagons and shit. Get over it. They all supposedly know how "the industry works" so why are they surprised and why are they even getting involved and even pretending to "care"? I'm loving everything about this campaign for Miley! It's all working perfectly and I honestly believe that she is just laughing so hard at peoples reactions and stuff. She doesn't give two shits to how people perceive this persona, she's getting the attention she needs to be successful! Well that's all alright then, let her carry on mocking people with serious mental troubles, as long as Miley is getting success out of it. I'm sorry but, you and anyone else who is actually getting some kind of pleasure out of this whole thing, well, I've lost some respect. Mental illness is nothing to be made lightly of or used as a tool for mockery.

Mental illness is nothing to be made lightly of or used as a tool for mockery. I honestly couldn't agree more. Miley's probably just sitting there on Twitter and thinking (well, she evidently wasn't thinking) that if she does this it'll give her more attention and it'll cause more controversy that she so desperately wants, but she needs to actually think about the seriousness of the mocking people with mental health issues. I've lost a lot of respect for her and anybody who agrees with her actions, especially at this current moment.

I'm sorry but, you and anyone else who is actually getting some kind of pleasure out of this whole thing, well, I've lost some respect. Mental illness is nothing to be made lightly of or used as a tool for mockery. Agreed. There's far too much (and not just about Miley) "Well, she's selling records, people are talking about her so she's winning" attitude. I'm not saying mental issues are sacred (Nothing is. Everything should be subject to wit and satire) but just slagging someone off for having mental health issue is so short-sighted. The chance of Miley herself of having some sort of mental health issue in the future - or some sort of related fame-induced personal problem whether it's alcoholism, drug addiction - is pretty high so it'll come back to bite her.
October 4, 201311 yr Overall I think what Miley has been doing so far is pretty damn smart. Especially now that I know the album is really really good. Are you making the point that having a good album means you can behave how you want? Or is it that it's less desperate to do such things if the music can sell itself?
October 4, 201311 yr Are you making the point that having a good album means you can behave how you want? Or is it that it's less desperate to do such things if the music can sell itself? She wasn't building hype for a mediocre record.
October 4, 201311 yr I do believe Miley just got incredibly defensive, she's still incredibly young which I think people are forgetting. Amanda Bynes has done nothing but attack her for the past couple of weeks (It annoys me that Sinead in her new open letter says that Amanda Bynes has done nothing to Miley) I'm not excusing what Miley said regarding the mental illness but she admires Britney and she's performed at events to help raise awareness for things associated with illness. I do think Sinead is attention seeking regarding the matter.

October 4, 201311 yr Didn't Britney's breakdown happen like when she was in KINDERGARTEN?! Not quite, I think people are quick to judge and forget that she's still a 20 year old girl. I'm sure that we've all said things at this age that we regret especially when provoked.

I'm sure that we've all said things at this age that we regret especially when provoked. Yes, but she clearly acts like she's all grown up now. Comes with responsibility to actually act more like an adult. She should've just ignored Sinead's concerns if there was nothing positive to be said.
