Sogand finally makes her BJSC debut

We are proud to announce that we were unable to find something less risky that we could get behind and thus Persephonia's 52nd entry entry for the 73rd BuzzJack Song Contest in Jankonie, Hushkanukia is Iranian-born German singer Sogand with 'The Lom'.

It represents two firsts for us - our first ever German entrant (but not our first ever Iranian born entrant oddly enough as TĀLĀ also hails from that country) and our first ever fully fledged foreign language entry. Kidnap Kid's 'Vehl' contained French vocals but those vocals were simply a spoken sample with the main focus of the track being its instrumental. That aside we've sent 46 standard English-language entries and 4 instrumentals, so 'The Lom' - sung entirely in the Persian language, its title translating as 'My Heart' - is quite the EXOTIC deviation from the Persephonian formula.

Musically though it's not a million miles off our usual fare so we hopefully won't alienate you lot too much. It's another fairly subtle and beautious slice of electronic music. We hope it finds a few new fans because God knows we're gonna need them to keep up our qualification streak as the song's two main known supporters are in the other semi.

Have a listen below (and watch the video because we're trying to push the VISUAL aspect with our entries again and the video is very lovely and artistic)

Persephonian President announces plans to retire; build Beaverhousen statue

President Salim Zosimus, who has led the country since the end of the Persephonian Civil War (aside from a brief period of exile during the Ostronian uprising), has announced that he will stand down after the end of his third and current term.

The official new candidate for his Carellisienne People's Congress party is yet to be announced but is likely to be its current Vice President, Izzy Azergla. If she is elected, she will become the first female leader of the country.

The election is due to take place on the 12th of April. The main opposition candidate to the ruling CPC is Dan J. Kotek of the Let's All Just Be Friends Srsly Party who finished second in last year's election.

Zosimus has also announced that his final act as President will be to commission the building of a giant wooden statue of Michael Beaverhousen, the Buffy/ Charmed of Paragon of Good Music, Defender Against the Bad Music and Otherwise Taste, Beaverdoniaimpacktnationsummerwinterbloomfruits #1 Country and Highway Song. The statue will be built in the southern town of Port-Iosiff, replacing the currently existing Bellamian embassy which is due to be closed soon. The announcement achieved 97% approval from the Persephonian public.

Qualification streak finally broken

SAD NEWS from Hushkanukia as Sogand's 'The Lom' has become our first non-qualifier since The Hics' 'Tangle' all the way back in BJSC LIX.

It's not too bad though as it didn't particularly come as a shock, with a pretty unfavourable bunch of countries drawn into our semi-final, and the Persephonian BJSC Committee has stated that it was proud for our streak to be ended with a risky entry that we were genuinely behind rather than something slightly more desperate for wide appeal.

For the first time ever 16 songs from each semi-final progressed, though it wasn't enough for Sogand as she finished a still respectable 19th (according to the hosts anyway, still currently awaiting the voting spreadsheets to confirm the result and how many points she received). EDITOR'S NOTE: actually getting to find out who voted for us before the final is something I've personally missed, every cloud!!1! Excuse me, I have a bleeding wrist to attend to

UPDATE: The spreadsheets are up, Sogand finished with 52 points including 10 from both FSR Rontvia (!) and Skall, and a surprise 6 from Oslol who we're still yet to ever trade final points with and very rarely do in the semi-finals either. In fact this may well be the first time we've ever received semi-final points from Oslol. Apart from one time which was a mistake. Long story.

UPDATE 2: It appears Sogand actually finished 20th as Sangria's 10 points from Jamvale were omitted in the original spreadsheet.

Daehun now solely hold the current record for most consecutive final appearances with 14. Fljótavík also broke a lengthy streak this month leaving #00274E in second place on that list with a comparatively meagre 7 qualifiers in a row.

Persephonia LXXIV entry reportedly already confirmed

In related news to our DNQ as discussed above, it is believed the Persephonian BJSC Committee have already begun preparations for our next entry. We are still currently under embargo and cannot reveal the song yet but PREPARE YOUR TISSUES, because it's an emotional banger and a half. Last place in the semi has never sounded so good and yet so sad.

Ah Bray :(

A bit gutted you ended your streak with this one. A wonderfully unique entry that really hit me on my second listen. Perhaps the nature of it meant it needed time to grow on others too (that and it was an unfortunate semi for it obviously). -_-

LXXIV artist booking rumour untrue after all

Despite our infallible sources, it has emerged now that the mystery artist previously thought to be confirmed for BJSC LXXIV has been delayed again due to bureaucratic problems or something. Persephonia's new confirmed act for BJSC LXXIV is one the Persephonian BJSC Committee are much more confident about. Whether that confidence is misplaced will remain to be seen but look out for Persephonia again very soon, not that we ever went away ~

BJSC LXXIII final results commentary + Persephonia's televote results

Our neighbours/arch nemeses Daehun were evenly matched with us last month but there was no competition in BJSC LXXIII in Hushkanukia as we DNQed while Daehun took home a second win, their fourth top 10 hit in a row. Their entry 'Raindrops' by SNBRN feat. Kerli was the lowest scoring winner for a while despite the massive size of the contest (64 voters in the final), but still managed a not-too-shabby 199 points. Cheapness pays off sometimes.

The main favourites of the contest were FARC and while they didn't quite get their second win, they came very close with a second place finish on 196 points for Paulini's 'Air It All Out' (7th Heaven Radio Edit). Not too far behind them, Aquafina finally achieved their long overdue first top 3 hit after coming fourth twice before. Max Elto came 3rd for them with 'Somebody Like You' on 186 points. They had previously come 2nd representing Hendinia with 'Shadow Of The Sun', back when they were known as Taped Rai.

Aeroche missed the top 10 an unthinkable two times in a row but ended their dry streak this contest coming 4th with 'EXHUME' by Sidewalks And Skeletons, the only song in the top 5 that received points from Persephonia (though it got 12 of them out of its total of 173 points so not bad representation). Completing the top 5 with their first top 5 finisher since they came 2nd with Aura Dione's 'Geronimo' way back in BJSC XXXIX, the Kluminican Republic took home fifth place with 'Electric Love' by BØRNS on 172 points.

Three more nations got a second top 10 hit in a row - D'yermak'er followed Kitty with a 6th place finish courtesy of Mikky Ekko's 'Love You Crazy', Jayrusalem's latest return has proven their most successful BJSC outing yet as they came 8th with LION BABE's 'Treat Me Like Fire' (a little below predictions but that was largely our fault for driving excessive hype oops), and Utopia managed back-to-back top tenners for only the second time in their lengthy history, coming 10th with 'Yours Truly' by Mr FijiWiji feat. Danyka Nadeau. Another long-standing country with few top 10 hits to their name, PRoJ pulled a shocker to come as high as 7th with Everything Everything's 'Distant Past', we are surprised but delighted at their success after the band previously came fourth from bottom with 'My Kz, Ur BF', admittedly now a rather long time ago (BJSC XXIX, representing Palmyra). The last slot in the top 10 (9th) went to Florina - their second best finish and third top 10 - with the GORGEOUS 'Vacant Space' by George Maple, another bit of a dark horse to us. All of our top 4 made the top 10 overall which more than makes up for a fairly disappointing top 2.

New countries are flowing in rapidly, three made their debut in Hushkanukia and four more are expected to do so in Daehun next month. Beaverdonia sadly fell short of the final of BJSC LXXIII with their iconic entry from Mazoo And The Zoo but Thelonia and Taahino both got off to decent starts, the former came 14th with first entry 'Got It' by Marian Hill and the latter coming 19th with The Summer Set's 'Lightning In A Bottle'. Ojnoj returned to the contest after a brief hiatus and came 29th with comeback entry 'Ratchet Commandments' by Tink.

N-Lazone's 30th entry, 'America' by XYLØ, came oh so close to finally giving them a top 10 hit but it wasn't to be as it finished 12th, still a new peak for the nation. Tinnmark were 15th with 'Make Me A Bird' by Arcane Station feat. Marianne Hekkilæ, their first top 20 hit since Ghost Beach's 'Close Enough' (feat. Noosa) came 5th in BJSC LII.

Nearly all members of the Union of Jubirdia who entered this month managed to qualify, all bar ourselves and Séyetana in fact. Those we haven't already mentioned: Bellamia fell just short of consecutive top 10s, coming 11th with Niykee Heaton's 'Cold War'; Harmonica scored their second hit with HOLYCHILD's 'Running Behind' in 17th; Trifoski were 20th with 'Major Happy' by Fred V & Grafix; Hendinia came 25th with Stockholm Syndrome's 'Karma', the second entry of the year for that group; Ramrynia somehow qualified and came 26th with Erika Selin's 'Break Me Up'; Bignia-Zaragovina and New Lexico had the same points, votes and 12s but the 27th/28th tie was given to the former's 'If I Had A Boat' by Karen Elson over the latter's 'Frozen Silence' by Fahrenhaidt based on number of 10s; Sandebörg were 30th with Liza Fox's 'Dynamite'; autoqualifying Desbuanda managed 32nd with Amber-Simone's 'Throwing Arrows'.

The wooden spoon this month was for a song that came 34th - the first time a final has been this large aside from One Big Final contests. Commiserations then to Ultraviolenceland who came last with Clare Bowen's 'Black Roses' on 40 points, though on the upside that's still easily their best performance following an opening run of 5 straight DNQs.

Here's how the Persephonian public voted:

A-WA represent Persephonia across the border

Following our buzz Middle Eastern language entry last month, A-WA are providing our real Middle Eastern language debut in BJSC LXXIV in Hyosan, Daehun, with the super infectious 'Habib Galbi'.

These three sisters from the Haim family - no, not Alana, Danielle and Este, this is a different Haim trio consisting of Tair, Liron and Tagel - come from the Arava Valley in southern Israel and their music is a mixture of traditional Yemenite Arabic folk songs and modern dance and hip-hop music. It may sound like a hot mess from the description but believe us, it works.

The entry continues our (not consciously planned) recent improvements in national diversity by being our first Israeli entrant and also our second proper foreign language entry just a month after the first. It also continues our periodic commitment to bringing the visuals as well as the audio, with a rather incredible music video which you can view below.

Back in the final with A-WA

After a one-month interlude Persephonia are back to qualifying as A-WA's 'Habib Galbi' successfully made it through to the final of BJSC LXXIV. It's a long climb back to the top of the qualification streak table and we most certainly aren't going to get there again. But 1 is better than 0.

Sadly for the first time since BJSC LVIII a song we awarded 12 points to in the semi-final has failed to make it through (and it's the first time since BJSC LII that we've lost all of our 12 pointers, as we voted in both semi-finals in LVIII). A day of mourning has been announced in certain niche areas of the country following Quintessa's failure to qualify. The Persephonian public's favourite in semi-final 1, from Terra Avium, also didn't qualify. SCANDAL.

Election results: CAPECO win again, Azergla becomes first female president

Persephonians everywhere went to the polling booths yesterday to decide who would replace Salim Zosimus as the country's president. By a slim margin, Zosimus' party the Carellisienne People's Congress (CAPECO) won once again and so the party's new leader Izzy Azergla is to be sworn in as president today. She is the first female leader of Persephonia. She was quoted as saying "this is totes progressive yo". In his final address to the nation, Zosimus signed off with "lol bai".

Perennial candidate for the presidency Dan J. Kotek was defeated again as his Let's All Just Be Friends Srsly party (LAJBSF) came second in the election. He was quoted as saying "dafuk is this shet" in an exclusive interview with The Daily Egab.

Beat Connection resurrected to right the wrongs of the past in Your Best of BJSC

The latest BJSC spinoff, 'Your Best of...', has finally given the Persephonian BJSC Committee an opportunity to plumb the deep dark depths of undeserved flopatry in Persephonia's early days and give us a second chance to do well. And for the contest we've picked out a song that we deem to be BEFORE ITS TIME, dating years back before the tropical house boom.

Beat Connection's 'In The Water' failed to qualify in BJSC XXXIV, not helped by Persephonia's votes being lost in the system nonexistent, though it would have DNQed anyway even without a 33% deduction. As it were, it came second last in its semi-final with 23 points. We have high hopes that the changed tastes of the BJSC community will see us do a fair bit better than that this time, not least because it's a One Big Final so we can't DNQ with it again.

Listen and enjoy below ~
