Persephonia bring the Halloween spookyscariness to Mulgracia and Jadakissnia

It was only a matter of time after our stanning of the likes of Sidewalks And Skeletons and Power Glove earlier in the year - Persephonia has whipped out its very own spookyscary instrumental * for BJSC LXXIX, just in time for Halloween! Representing the much underappreciated in BJSC genre of synthwave, Californian duo DANCE WITH THE DEAD are the latest Persephonian entry with their epic track 'Waves' off their 2014 album 'Near Dark'. The song is in semi-final 2, hosted in Mulgracia following their win last month. Semi-final 1 however is being hosted by Jadakissnia. Have a listen below and if you like it and are in semi-final 2, send some points our way and they will be much appreciated. x

It is entirely coincidental that we've sent 2 artists with death-related names in a row, and 2 songs with ocean-related names in a row. However, as you all probably know, we just love vague patterns so we'll point it out anyway. And considering we had another ocean-related entry this year in 'Tide: The Paradox Effect', and both that and 'Ocean' came top 4, is that a good omen for 'Waves'?!! We shall soon find out.

*well I suppose we already did 3 months ago with 'Burning' but that was a bit different ~

First 'other' spinoff top 5 success and third MORAL SPINOFF VICTORY for The xx!

Persephonia have been crowned the moral winners of yet another spinoff. Following Beat Connection getting the highest entry in Your Best of BJSC that originally DNQed and then The Chemical Brothers getting the highest entry in Dance Anthems 2000-2009 that missed the UK top 40, The xx's 'Angels' is the highest entry in UK Chart Near Misses that didn't make the yearly finals in this year's Record of the Decade. Our fingers are starting to hurt from this straw-clutching.

In all seriousness though, 'Angels' has secured our highest finish in a spinoff (other than BJFestivalen and the year-end The Best of BJSC/The Rejects competitions) to date, finishing 5th in the contest (hosted in Danaelanda) with a mildly frustrating 99 points. We continue to move on up after getting our first top 10 in such a contest last time and hope that a spinoff medal cannot be far away. Even if we may have to sell our souls to the cheap devil if these results are anything to go by. Much love to those who contributed to our success, especially Jadakissnia and Thelonia providing the track with a full 12 points and Flynnonda giving it 8.

Ultraviolenceland achieved their first BJSC event win with Ellie Goulding's 'Lights' well ahead of all competition on 148 points. The fight for 2nd place was much more closely contested between three other slightly predictable but nonetheless GOOD entries. Ultimately the silver went to Vülkyria with Justice's 'D.A.N.C.E.' on 116 points. Aprogonia came 3rd with 115 points for M.I.A.'s 'Bad Girls' (the second top 3 finish in a row in the spinoff forum for M.I.A. of course) and Joedonia, hot off the back of their top 2 finish in the main contest, came 4th with 113 points with Jessie Ware's 'Wildest Moments'.

Persephonia's televote results for the contest are published below.

DANCE WITH THE DEAD dance into the final

Persephonia's qualification streak is up to 6 again as DANCE WITH THE DEAD's 'Waves' provides our 42nd finalist (Douglas Adams approves from beyond the grave :'(), progressing through semi-final 2 to the grand final of BJSC LXXIX in Sgarameet, Mulgracia.

With Aquafina's current ban from the contest bringing an end to their streak of 11 qualifiers and Hendinia missing out on a 9th in a row with Alaska Thunderfuck's 'This Is My Hair', Hushkanukia have now taken the record for consecutive finalists with 8 in a row. Persephonia are back up to joint 3rd on the list, behind Aeroche's 7 and tied with Altyr Muunilinst, Cor Lupus and current hosts Mulgracia.

This is quite possibly our best chance yet of securing back-to-back top 10 hits unless RontBet hype was entirely misplaced (which is possible). Let's make it happen!!1

Persephonia achieve the dream with back-to-back top 10 finishes in Mulgracia

It was revealed on Saturday night that Persephonia's entry to BJSC LXXIX, 'Waves' by DANCE WITH THE DEAD, achieved 3rd place with a total of 278 points. It marks our tenth top 10 finish in all (nine of which have come top 5 and seven of them top 3) and FINALLY, on our ninth opportunity, we've managed top 10 hits in consecutive main contests. (In fact, including spinoffs, our last 4 BJSC entries have all made the top 10, but that doesn't count). Moreover, we've followed the slightly contentious bronze medal we achieved last month after Aquafina's disqualification with a legitimate bronze medal, joining the relatively short list of countries to come top 3 twice in a row, albeit on a technicality. And it gives our 5th top 10 finish this year alone, matching the total we managed in every year prior to this one combined.

Like last entry 'Ocean' the song had received a fairly mild amount of hype, being generally quite far down the odds and with only a few low top 10 predictions so it's another surprisingly high finish for us. 'Waves' overall did pretty much the same as 'Ocean', with the same final position on only 5 more points, and only 4 fewer points in the semi-final - however, while 'Ocean' came 2nd in its semi-final, 'Waves' was confirmed as Persephonia's third semi-final winner, topping semi 2 with 111 points which actually made it the projected winner. We remain yet to win a semi and a final in the same contest though. That's next on the bucket list.

Major thanks as always to the 34 countries who voted for Persephonia this month, especially Jadakissnia, Summericia and Terra Avium for giving us a full 18 points, Danaelanda, Joedonia and Skall giving 15 and Quintessa and Tartford giving 13. The love was reciprocated for most of those countries. :magic:

Final results commentary + Persephonia's televote results

When Aeroche just missed out on a win with Ponibbi's 'HEARTSKIP' 2 contests back it started to look in doubt whether they'd manage a win at all this year, but any doubt has been proved wrong as the nation achieved their 6th win in the Mulgracia-hosted contest, taking home 300 points with 'Heaven' by Shaun Frank and KSHMR feat. Delaney Jane. Normality resumed! It was their 5th top 10 hit in a row and despite a slow start to the year, Aeroche are now looking in a pretty good position to claim year-end #1 once again. They became only the third country to win six times, matching the achievement of Mdiče and, with more 2nd placers than them, going up to #2 on the all-time medal table, only behind former and occasionally current BJSC titans FSR Rontvia who have won 8 times.

It wasn't an entirely unpredictable winner but the hot favourite from day 1 (or at least one of the two hot favourites, depending on how much you rate the IMPAKT of PersepBet's slightly flawed predictions) was 'Circles' by Truls who is of course most famous for providing Persephonia with their very first top 3 hit with 'Out Of Yourself' back in BJSC LIII. The newer Truls song was going for Kluminican Republic's first ever win but ultimately had to settle for their second silver medalist with 283 points. The country previously came 2nd 40 contests ago with Aura Dione's 'Geronimo'. Topping the PersepBet odds but generally considered 2nd favourite at best by others, Quintessa couldn't quite match the big hitters of the contest but nonetheless set a big new personal best of 4th place with Avec Sans' 'Resonate' on 251 points, their first ever top 10 hit. Completing the top 5 with 247 points was 'GIVE MY LOVE' by JOYRYDE, the second highest position ever achieved by Vülkyria (they came 3rd under their old name of Letland in BJSC XXXII with Anine Stang's 'Dominoes').

Continuing to rack up the top 10 hits, Ramrynia came 6th with XYconstant's 'Do It Well' (feat. Tom Aspaul) - recycling an artist from just one month prior, as only Ramrynia and Joedonia would be cheap enough to do - to claim a 4th top 10 finish in a row. We're slightly less jealous of such achievements now we've managed to do more than 1 in a row. Ramrynia are among the most successful and long-standing nations to never win, as are the two countries that came 7th (Espen) and 8th (Tinnmark). Espen's entry (Club cheval's 'Discipline') provided their 18th top 10, a record for a nation that has never won, while Tinnmark's (Hellberg's 'The Girl' (feat. Cozi Zuehlsdorff)) was only their 8th top 10, but their 71st entry in all which is also a record for a non-winning nation. The top 10 was rounded off by Hushkanukia in 9th with Sumera's 'Wolf', their third top 10 hit, and Cadelicia in 10th with XOV's 'DTTM (Don't Talk To Me)', also a third top 10 hit though they've yet to come higher than 9th.

Two countries - St. Burbia and What - made their debut main contest appearance in BJSC LXXIX, but neither made it to the final (and it'll be a bit of a wait for What to have another chance as they failed to vote in the final). Kluminican Republic were the most successful returning nation - having been banned from the last contest - but there were also comeback successes for Jayrusalem (again) in 13th with the Makeup And Vanity Set remix of MYZICA's 'Wait Just A Minute', Beaverdonia whose recalibrated sound delivered them 23rd place with Yall's 'Hundred Miles' (feat. Gabriela Richardson) and Cumulonimbia who entered the classic 'Get Up' by Young Fathers and came 27th.

Other countries to achieve new peaks were Tartford, who got their first top 20 hit in 17th place with Son Lux's 'You Don't Know Me' (a full 69 contests after their debut, though they sat a large chunk of the intervening contests out), and Dobago who lucked their way into the final over poor brave Kylienips despite only coming 21st in the semi-final thanks to a certain floppy host, but nonetheless finished 35th with Koo's 'Sail Away', one place higher than their debut entry last month.

It was a bit of déjà vu in a NOT SO FUN way for Syndare this month as they repeated their 'feat' from 2 months ago of being the only country in the final to fail to receive 100 points. They took the wooden spoon for 42nd place with Tanika's 'FUCKBOY', which had trailed all competition for the entire final results reveal and ended up on just 74 points, 37 fewer than the next floppiest song. Oop. At least they qualified eh?

Here is how Persephonia ranked all of your wonderful and not so wonderful songs this month:

SEXWITCH seek to spook and slay in BJSC's Halloween special

BJSC is heading to Terra Avium for the first time for the very fitting theme of Halloween for its latest spinoff. The Persephonian BJSC Committee (or should that be Percemeterian BJSC Committee, to tie in with our alias for the contest? :magic:) was lucky enough to stumble upon some GOLD for the contest very quickly and we present it to you now.

Representing us in the spinoff are SEXWITCH, a band whose vocalist is definitely not Natasha Khan aka Bat For Lashes and we resent the accusation we'd ever be that cheap. Also involved in the mini super-group are the psychedelic rock band TOY. The group released their self-titled debut album earlier this year, comprising 6 interpretations of 70s psychedelic tracks from around the world. Pretty much any track from the album could have been an entry for this spinoff but we selected the most ~INTENSE~ one (also the longest at 7 minutes 54 seconds, making it Persephonia's longest entry to any BJSC event), 'Kassidat El Hakka'.

The song (whose title means 'Poem of the Truth') is based off one of the same name by Moroccan musician Abdellah el Magana who seems suitably mysterious, returning few results on Google. Thankfully for y'all's xenophobic ears SEXWITCH took the liberty of replacing the original Arabic lyrics with entirely new (and rather unsettling~) ones in English, also adding in some blood-curdling screams at the end for extra spookyscariness. The original track is rather different. Both versions are linked below if it is of interest to anyone.

Happy Halloween :magic:

Congrats on your back-to-back top 10s! *.* 'Waves' was fully deserving of my top points, not tiring of it in the slightest despite many listens <3

Also, I had no doubt that you'd bring it to the spinoff given that spookyscary is one of your thangs but you've REALLY brought it *.* was so blown away by your entry!

Yassssssssss *.* x

Imogen Heap prevents disastrous Evanescence win in Re:LOADED VI

The sixth edition of BJSC Re:LOADED has concluded in Lautianna, Séyetana, with Mdiče's entry 'Hide And Seek' by Imogen Heap being crowned the winner. Since it was originally entered the song has become better known for being sampled in Jason Derulo's 'Whatcha Say' which perhaps aided it in doing far better than it did originally (coming 16th in BJSC VI).

It won the rerun with 98 points, 15 clear of second placed Xanaga who THANKFULLY didn't get the win we were anticipating with 'Bring Me To Life' by Evanescence. A more acceptable uninspired entry, 'They' by Jem came 3rd for Kylienips with 79 points. The original winner, a live performance of 'Black Butta' on Later... With Jools Holland by Beverley Knight which was Quotosibb's first ever entry, finished only 9th this time. Meanwhile at the other end of the scoreboard Camtoro repeated their 0-point 'achievement' from the last Re:LOADED with Tokio Hotel's '1000 Meere', which also came last in the original contest.

Persephonia voted as follows:

12 π // Adele - Hometown Glory 10/10

10 Utopia // Foals - Hummer 9.5/10

8 Botanikka // The Cardigans - My Favourite Game 9.5/10

7 Ashton // Lily Allen - The Fear 9/10

6 Tapatilandia // Kraak & Smaak feat. Ben Westbeech - Squeeze Me 9/10

5 Sangria // Nox - Ébredj Fel! 9/10

4 Kylienips // Jem - They 9/10

3 Bhangra // Fragma - Toca's Miracle 9/10

2 Faztickle // Ida Corr vs. Fedde Le Grand - Let Me Think About It 9/10

1 Simondly // N-Trance feat. Kelly Llorenna - Set You Free 8.5/10

Cascadia // Björk - Earth Intruders 8/10

Kingdom of Shadow // Chicane feat. Tom Jones - Stoned In Love 8/10

Mdiče // Imogen Heap - Hide And Seek 7.5/10

Angelicland // Katharine McPhee - Open Toes 7/10

Bokia // Elena Risteska - Million Dollar Player 7/10

Quotosibb // Beverley Knight - Black Butta 6.5/10

Qärenfanghoney // SEREBRO - Opium 6.5/10

Leonville // Westlife - Con Lo Bien Que Te Ves 6.5/10

Dulpaen // The Hoosiers - Killer 6.5/10

Land of Jack // A Fine Frenzy - Almost Lover 6.5/10

Rivandia // Rilo Kiley - The Angels Hung Around 6/10

Another new spinoff peak (and MORAL VICTORY) with SEXWITCH!

We successfully broke our own record position in BJSC spinoffs a fourth time in a row (excluding BJFestivalen), with SEXWITCH's 'Kassidat El Hakka' finishing 4th in the Halloween spinoff in Terra Avium, one position better than our showing in UK Chart Near Misses. The 178 points 'Kassidat El Hakka' received were also our highest to date in a spinoff, helped by the return of the 18 point system. It marked our third spinoff top 10 (all consecutive), and 5 consecutive top 10 finishes in BJSC events, a record which will definitely not be continuing in BJSC LXXX (but HYPE nonetheless for our recently changed entry! :magic: Previewing our more risky approach to the contest coming up to 2016, abandoning our policy of whoring our songs out to about 15 people before the contest starts). - well that's not happening anyway cos we got vetoed

On top of that it also marked our fourth MORAL VICTORY in a spinoff (see the report on our UK Chart Near Misses further up the page for details of the previous three ~), being the highest ranked song that wasn't a UK top 40 hit!!1 SEXWITCH received a full 18 from Deandria, D'yermak'er and Kluminican Republic, for which we are eternally grateful. Emphasis on the 'eternal'. Cos zombies. Much love also to Séyetana for giving us 13 points and all the other nations who also included us in their votes. As for the rest of you... we know what you did last spinoff.

Richly rewarded for their choice of 18 pointers, D'yermak'er and Deandria made up the top 2 of the hard-fought and nailbitingly close contest, with the former's entry 'Tubular Bells' by Mike Oldfield (which also received our 18 points in return, yay for 18 swapping) ultimately coming out on top with 223 points, becoming only the second instrumental track to win a BJSC event following our BJSC LXVII winner 'Cry For Freedom' by Jay Dabhi and Moises Modesto. It was also D'yermak'er's second win of a BJSC event, having previously won The Best of the Rejects VI with Miguel's 'Adorn'.

Close behind was Deandria's entry, The Cranberries' 'Zombie' which had been heavily tipped to win but couldn't quite do it, receiving 215 points, nonetheless still easily Deandria's best performance to date in any BJSC event. 3rd place went to Hushkanukia with James Newton Howard's 'The Hanging Tree' (feat. Jennifer Lawrence) which had lead for a lot of the final results reveal, ending up well ahead of all but the top 2 with 205 points. Another of Persephonian voters' absolute favourites, 'King Night' by SALEM completed the top 5 in 5th place with 174 points representing FARC. The top 10 also included the hosts Terra Avium, their first top 10 showing of 2015 in 9th with John Carpenter's 'Halloween Theme', and a somewhat surprise 7th place finish for our bloc voting partner alias nation top ally Jadakissnia with Unison's 'Blood Blood Blood !!', returning them to spinoff success following their poor showing in UK Chart Near Misses. Persephonia gave points to all of the top 12 bar ourselves and Cor Lupus' 8th-placed entry, which only just missed out on points from us itself. Happy voters :3

Speaking of Persephonia's points, here is our full televote result for the contest (featuring the incredible country pun names we helped to create B-)):

10 N PHNTM // AGLORY - UTUG 9.5/10
