Persephonian News Bulletin ~ 16/12/2015

Full house of Persephonian top 5 hits in the Best of BJSC VIII semi-finals!

It was a successful night for Persephonia as Ramrynia revealed the results of the nominations round of The Best of BJSC VIII and 4 additional places in the semi-finals were confirmed for Persephonia, as well as the already-confirmed spot for A-WA's 'Habib Galbi'. It's by far the most songs we've ever sent to the semi-finals, having managed 2 of them in each of the last two years, none in 2012 and 1 in each of the two years before that. To date all of our top 10 hits have got to the semi-finals at least (as well as 13th placer 'I Wrote The Book' by Beth Ditto) and so far none of our songs that got past nominations failed to reach the final - a big ask to keep up that streak with 5 songs to get through this time but we remain optimistic.

Obviously the 4 extra qualifiers were the other 4 Persephonia entries that came top 5 this year - bronze medallists tiny deaths with 'Ocean' and DANCE WITH THE DEAD with 'Waves', plus 4th placer Dawn Richard with 'Tide: The Paradox Effect' and 5th placer Audrey Napoleon with 'Dope A La Mode'. Of the other 3, San Holo's 'Hiding' (feat. The Nicholas) came the closest to providing a 6th semi-finalist for us, as it received 13 nomination points to come 18th out of the 31 LXXI entries. Audialist's 'Burning' got 8 points to come 21st of 40 LXXV entries and WEDNESDAY CAMPANELLA's 'Shakushain' received only 4 points, coming 31st of 41 LXXVII entries. Our least successful eligible song last year (Eagles For Hands' 'Glass Heart' (feat. Holly Partridge)) also got 4 points.

There was some good news for songs that fell short of the top end of the scoreboards in their original contests though - 4 of the 70 qualifiers announced tonight originally didn't even go top 20, with the lowest original position being just 32nd, for Federal Republic of Ashton with Gabrielle's '5 Fine Frøkner'.

~~

In other news I've done a bit of spring cleaning with the song links in the 2nd and 3rd posts of this thread (after finding the link for 'Kassidat El Hakka' no longer works in this country). Grr at Spark letting the team down as the only one of my main contest entries that doesn't have an official upload on either YouTube or SoundCloud <_<

More EOY posts possibly coming tonight! x

Best songs of the year - 30-26

030 Quintessa 75 // Priest - Strong Hearts

029 Jadakissnia 80 // Stranger Cat - Unzip Your Skin

028 Hushkanukia 72 // PVRIS - St. Patrick

027 Danaelanda 77 // KSHMR - Jammu

026 N DNTN 72 // 18+ - Dry

We're really into 11/10 territory by this stage (which says more about how devaled an 11/10 rating from me is than anything else, but hey, is there really anything wrong with loving a lot of songs??), but at #30 is a song that barely cleared 11 POINTS in its semi-final. Quintessa's 2nd highest entry - there were never any prizes for guessing what my top Quintessa pick would be - is Priest's 'Strong Hearts', which came second to last in the contest I hosted with just 15 points. And only 3 of those were from me, with even that being an improvement on ranking it ~14th in the semi on my first listen through. Since then though, it's somehow wormed its way into my head (especially its lovely wistful chorus) and is now one of the songs I remember most fondly from that hosting experience. I somehow feel like even Leonardo has disowned this one a bit by now but dammit it's a good song. Sounds almost like something CHVRCHES could have released and we all love CHVRCHES right? Until BJSC80, Jadakissnia's entries' performances in the contest were exactly in the same order as my preferences of them (spoilers for the order of the 2 remaining ones lol), with their first DNQ in particular being by far their worst entry to date, and actually one of the more forgettable entries by anyone this year (is this bit of shade enough to dispel the bloc voting allegations?)... but other than that all of their entries have been proper moments, and that particular cool factoid was unfortunately broken when they inexplicably DNQed again with their most recent entry, Stranger Cat's 'Unzip Your Skin' which lands here at #29. This was another one of those songs where I could already tell I was going to love it within the first couple of seconds, because it's difficult to go wrong with that kind of glorious synthiness. I only liked it more when the gorge vocals kicked in. I can only assume it was a little too subtle to appeal to the dance-bloc-heavy semi-final it was drawn into. Thankfully it's getting some justice now having made the TBO Rejects final. Eagle-eyed readers may notice this is only the 4th highest ranked song that's in said final - too many unjust DNQs this year, but at least most of the best ones are getting the support on their second chance! The third highest Rejects finalist - and also the third highest entry from N DNTN - is also found here at #26, 'Dry' by 18+. I was a little shocked this of all their DNQs was the one to make it so far in Rejects as it seems like the most niche and experimental of all of them, being a very ~intense~ and twisted listening experience, sounding like someone took a trap song and ran it through a 'hipster' filter about 100 times and this was the outcome. It could pretty much only be an N DNTN entry (during one of their 'not caring about qualifying' phases anyway) but YAY at it becoming one even if it didn't really do any better than expected. As with a lot of my favourite BJSC entries it's all about the production on this one, it'd probably be just as high on the list if it was an instrumental, as much as the guy's slightly creepy sinister sounding vocals and the girl's curious shivering noises contribute to the overall weird and wonderful experience. Enough chatting about DNQs, and onto a song I don't have to write as much about to justify my support for it, this post is already long enough - 28th place is my favourite winner of the year other than my own, narrowly edging out Meg Myers, Hushkanukia's breakout smash 'St. Patrick' by PVRIS. All I'm gonna say here is: Iz, what the fuck were you thinking passing on sending this?! Not only is it quintessentially Séyetana, it was just such a perfect entry choice, the absolute epitome of a brilliant female-fronted rock song. And a relatively rare example of a swear word in the chorus managing to sound IMPACTFUL rather than just gratuitous. Finally at #27 it's the crown jewel of Danaelanda's successful year, KSHMR's 'Jammu'. I always slightly despair when I see Dan talking about this song as if it's just another big dance track and no different to his other entries. Yes, it is sick :music: etc. and I can fully appreciate that. But what sets this apart from pretty much everything else Dan has ever sent is the South Asian tinge which injects a bit of identity and EMOTION into it, leading to me comparing it to my own entry 'Cry For Freedom' at the time (which is really high praise as that's still by far my favourite thing I've ever sent). Was happy to see it giving you another top 10 hit but I really wish it could have gone even further and challenged for a first win for you as some predicted, especially as it would go on to be overshadowed by the far, far, far inferior KSHMR track Leww sent, which really was no different from a standard Danaelanda-ish entry :( I'm glad you sent it anyway even if it feels like I connected to it more than you did lmao.

(Also just realised 'Jammu' could count as a foreign language song as well - does anyone know what the 'lyrics' on it even are? Must find out what language it is :magic: I assume it'd be Urdu based on the song title and Wikipedia but it could be any one of the seemingly hundreds of languages spoken in India).

I... wish I could go back in time 12 months and slap my past self. I'd say it's focused me though, next year will be my year.

no. It's well inside my top 10 SONGS of the year (EOY spoilers) so I clearly love/connect to it more.

and can we not @ the Shaun Frank/KSHMR 'Heaven' shade -_-

yay for JAMMU in your top 30 though, higher than I expected.

Persephonian News Bulletin ~ 19/12/2015

Sogand comes 24th in Rejects

The Best of the Rejects VIII has come to a close and our one finalist, Sogand's 'The Lom', finished 24th out of the 32 tracks in the final. She received 38 points, consisting of a full 12 points from Aeroche, a medal-placing 8 points each from FSR Rontvia and Land of DW, 5 from Taahino, 4 from Tinnmark and 1 from Jadakissnia. A fairly lukewarm showing but we are satisfied enough to have made the final and now there are less things to squeeze into our national thread subtitle. The focus is now shifted to the main Best of BJSC contest where we still have 5 songs in contention (so everyone vote for us!! :magic:)

The top two in the contest were both taken from BJSC LXXV (the contest we hosted. Impact). Winning, as widely expected (under the condition they voted, which they did) considering it being a surprise DNQ at the time and since becoming a big hit in the USA and potentially still a future UK hit, with 102 points was Republic of Adonia's entry 'Here' by Alessia Cara. One of two Taahino entries to make the final, Set It Off's 'Forever Stuck In Our Youth' was the runner-up with 86 points, a much better showing than when it was entered earlier in the year to the 'Your Best of the Rejects' spinoff (where it came just 25th). The other major favourite for the crown (as it became a minor UK hit and was also apparently a surprise DNQ at the time - we weren't surprised but I guess this result indicates we should have been??) was Tartford's BJSC LXXII entry 'Baby Love' by Petite Meller, which ultimately took bronze with 85 points. Persephonia didn't vote for any of this top 3, but the top 5 was completed by two entries that were in our top 5 - 4th with 81 points was our 6 pointer, Séyetana's PinkiePieSwear with 'Flutterwonder', and our 12 pointer 'The Home We Made Pt II' (Skrux Remix) by Crywolf feat. Maigan Kennedy came 5th for Terra Avium on 77 points.

And now we present all of Persephonia's votings in this year's Rejects ~

I'm glad I got to discover 'The Lom' through this! 1 point doesn't sound that great, but considering it was up against so many firm favourites it's great that it snuck in there. Lush <3

Yay for the Jadaphonia point swap continuing again. *.* Many thanks for all the points in all the rounds of this. An 11/10 ranking is such a wonderful thing to see (bless your generosity <3 hehe) and it may not have done too great but it's always fab to see big fans.

Persephonia comin' to slay the main TBO BJSC x

Persephonian News Bulletin ~ 24/12/2015

A Christmas Fucking Miracle indeed for Run The Jewels!

JUSTICE for our veto last month has been achieved as Run The Jewels did us proud in the BJSC Xmas Special II in Ultraviolenceland, giving Persephonia a 4th straight top 10 spinoff finish. 'A Christmas Fucking Miracle' squeaked in 9th place with a total of 145 points. 16 countries voted for it including 3 who placed it in a medal position (it got a full 18 from Flynnonda, 15 from Quintessa and 13 from Jadakissnia). Much love to all those who helped us finish on a good result with our last new entry this year <3 Now just the TBO final to go for 2015... more on that later in this post ~~~

Winning the contest - their first victory in any BJSC event - was Cadelicia's entry, the 1983 classic '2000 Miles' by Pretenders (a replacement for a vetoed Glee entry, categorically debunking that thing that Cody Slayberry seems to post every month...) which had a fairly convincing 25 point lead over its nearest rival, and 241 points in total. Sadly that meant PersepBet did have to pay out some money. They had only offered odds for 6 songs in the contest and that was one of them, but the 2nd placed song was not.

The silver medal, with 216 points, went to Quintessa who have gone from strength to strength in recent contests, this being their first ever top 3 finish. They also opted for a festive classic but digging back as far as 1963 with Darlene Love's 'Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)'. Altyr Muunilinst came top out of songs that were released in the current century, finishing third with 208 points with Hurts' 'All I Want For Christmas Is New Year's Day' (which had been PersepBet's favourite to win). Just behind that with 206 points and also achieving their best result to date in any BJSC event, it was a happy end to the year for poor downtrodden Usfland, coming 4th with Saint Etienne's 'I Was Born On Christmas Day' from 1993. Jadakissnia completed the top 5 making it 4 out of 5 top 10 finishes in spinoffs they've entered to date. They got 197 points including our all-important 18 to finish 5th with Glasvegas' 'A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like A Kiss)'.

Lagging well behind the top 5 but still inside the top 10 were Hushkanukia with Christina Perri's cover of 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)' coming 6th, a bit higher than the Delta Goodrem version which was 13th for FSR Rontvia in the first Xmas Special. Terra Avium took another festive instrumental to a spinoff top 10 in 7th place with Sergei Prokofiev's classical piece 'Troika' - even older than the Darlene Love track, dating from 1934 - and the top 10 was completed by Aeroche in 8th with Maps' cover of 'Stay Another Day' and Avalonia in 10th with Faith Hill's 'Where Are You Christmas?' (another country achieving their best result to date). Also of note, Trifoski came 15th with Sufjan Steven's 12 and a half minute OPUS 'Christmas Unicorn', providing the moral winner of the contest. *.*

On the other end of the spectrum, Vülkyria nearly repeated the breadstick performance of the infamous 'Bob O'Lean', having stuck at one point for much of the results. Ultimately they were lifted 200% to 3 points with Anjos and Suzy's 'Nesta Noite Branca', nonetheless still a convincing wooden spoon. *wah wah wah wahhh*

Here is how Persephonia (temporarily renamed Persethlehem ~) ranked all the festive delights. And a few other entries:

18 Jadakissmistletoenia // Glasvegas - A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like A Kiss) 11/10

15 Snowskall // Burial - Come Down To Us 11/10

13 Toyshopski // Sufjan Stevens - Christmas Unicorn 10/10

12 Carolicia // Pretenders - 2000 Miles 10/10

11 Terra Adventium // Sergei Prokofiev - Troika 9.5/10

10 Tinselonia // The Wombats - Is This Christmas? 9.5/10

8 Trianglesanta // Froggy Fresh - Christmas 9/10

7 Quintinsel // Darlene Love - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) 9/10

D'yermang'er // Mr. Showbiz - Showbiz Christmas a number too low to be comprehended by humans/10

Three Persephonia tracks through to the TBO final

Persephonia will officially make up 30% of the final of The Best of BJSC VIII as despite the brutal decision to only let 15 out of 40 songs through in each semi-final, three of our five semi-finalists made it through.

From semi-final 1, A-WA's 'Habib Galbi' made it through - as we were already fairly confident it would - as did Audrey Napoleon's 'Dope A La Mode'. Dawn Richard fell short with 'Tide: The Paradox Effect', which came 28th with 72 points. Over in semi-final 2, DANCE WITH THE DEAD's 'Waves' was safely through, while tiny deaths' 'Ocean' came either 21st or 22nd depending on tiebreaks (but probably 22nd) with 87 points. Only 10 points short of the final... but we have enough songs through as it is (the joint most of any nation, alongside Daehun) so we won't moan about that one. :teresa:

The contest is now on - will Persephonia have a song in the top 10 of 'The Best of BJSC' for a third year in a row??? We can't do it without your support so VOTE. Unless you don't like our songs. :D

(a replacement for a vetoed Glee entry, categorically debunking that thing that Cody Slayberry seems to post every month...)

But your two best songs through in TBO :cheer:

Eventually ~ Will post more sections when I have the inspiration to write the commentary for them :o (Poor Chez Wombat still having 5 of his songs yet to be revealed).

:o it continues. This will be the last section of 5 in this countdown because even though that will mean there are more posts, I might get it done quicker. Cos I just keep thinking 'I don't want to comment on 5 songs right now'. 2 per post may be more manageable. Must get a move on anyway now the next decade of BJSC is beginning :magic:

025 Jadakissnia 75 // ONUKA - Time

024 Espen 75 // Etienne De Crécy and Madeline Follin - You

023 FARC 78 // Ji Nilsson - Encore (Boeoes Kaelstigen Remix)

022 N DNTN 77 // Theodora - One Foot In The Grave

021 Singerpurear 78 // Kishi Bashi - I Am The Antichrist To You

As in the last post (feels like I haven't posted one all year :basil:) and indeed the one before it a Jadakissnia entry appears here, their second highest track on this countdown. This time it's their second entry and first top 10 hit, ONUKA's silky-smooth synthpop track 'Time', finishing 25th here. One of those songs that you can just get totally immersed in and probably end up wasting hours listening to it ~ ONUKA have since gone on to perform on Ukrainian X Factor. Why does the UK never get such interesting performers? Or are ONUKA the Ukrainian Robbie Williams? Who knows x 'Time' didn't repeat the 18 I gave to Jadakissnia's previous entry but I've always preferred it nonetheless, it just had rather stronger competition in the contest I hosted - such as the next track at #24, the higher of the two appearances from Espen, Etienne De Crécy and Madeline Follin's 'You'. This was the subject of a clash with N DNTN which was AWKS as I knew it was a huge hit from the moment I heard it (a very addictive and kewl retro sound, kind of quintessentially Espen really) and N DNTN really needed one around that time. Instead their replacement entry DNQed. Lol. Well maybe they'd have not liked getting another 2nd place anyway ~ and it's not like Espen weren't in need of a hit too, and a hit it delivered as it matched their all-time best of 2nd place. And it would have won if it weren't for that meddling Meg Myers. N DNTN lost the battle but they WON THE WAR... in my EOY anyway as they have 2 songs higher on this list than Espen's highest. In 22nd and the third of my top pointers to be announced so far is their BJSC77 entry 'One Foot In The Grave' by Theodora. Originally that was also announced as a DNQ but some faith in humanity was restored when it turned out one of the ever controversial administrative errors was what kept it out and it was restored to final status (and thankfully did a little bit better in the final than it barely scraping through on the support of literally 5 people suggested). Basically everything I said about 'Dry' also applies to this, it's mostly all about the production but the ~intriguing~ vocals do contribute to its slightly unsettling brilliance. Kind of like a more alternative electronic version of DENA. Does that comment offend you Chris? Idk where you stand on her. It's a good thing anyway. Like Jadakissnia and N DNTN, FARC's second highest appearance is just outside the top 20, they're at #23 with the Boeoes Kaelstigen remix of Ji Nilsson's 'Encore'. The circumstances behind it "DNQing" are a little bit more touchy so I won't go into that here :') but nonetheless, an absolutely gorgeous spacey chillout track that I really thought would have caught on a bit more anyway. Sad. The "I'm not ready at all" part of the chorus particularly sticks with me because that describes me in life in general. Lol. This became my favourite FARC entry to date - excluding 'Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)' from the Kellyana Kingdom days as that's not really comparable - but they got even better after this with their even more incredible entries to the Halloween spinoff and BJSC80. Hope they can keep up this recent run of quality with any future entries because Jake has excellent taste for the most part but too many of the FARC entries from earlier in the year were just unremarkable blog pop. Finally at #21 and fresh off the back of their surprise #4 hit in TBO with this song, it's the top appearance for Singerpurear, Kishi Bashi's 'I Am The Antichrist To You'. For some reason I didn't take to this song at all on first listen, but aided a bit by watching the adorable but heartbreaking tearjerker of a music video, I fell in love with it on listen 2, and since then it's always one that demands my full attention. An absolutely gorgeous track, sounding very much in the vein of Sigur Rós who are one of my favourite bands. Hooray for its well-deserved success in both its contest and TBO, and now and most importantly, my EOY. :magic:

Top 20 shall commence SOON and yes it is 25% Terra Avium. Can I get it done this week? (Probably not).
