A-WA take the bronze medal in TBO VIII

Persephonian News Bulletin has the exclusive, many days late, scoop as usual on the latest Persephonia BJSC results B-)

The Best of BJSC VIII has concluded and Persephonia succeeded in getting a song into the top 10 of the year-end contest for a third year in a row, and in the top 3 for a second in a row, as A-WA's 'Habib Galbi' came 3rd with 120 points (losing on a tiebreak for 2nd with Hushkanukia entry 'St. Patrick' by PVRIS). This matches our highest TBO finish (achieved last year with Kids Of The Apocalypse's 'EMPIRE') and also marks our first time over 100 points in either TBO or TBO Rejects.

Persephonia's other 2 finalists in the contest didn't do quite as well, instead settling for the 23rd and 24th place finishes that have haunted Persephonia's history. Audrey Napoleon's 'Dope A La Mode' was 23rd with 53 points, one position and one point ahead of DANCE WITH THE DEAD's 'Waves'. Nonetheless, thanks to everyone who gave points to any (or in a couple of cases all ;o) of our 3 finalists.

The winner of the contest, with 139 points, was Unovia with Grace's 'You Don't Own Me' (feat. G-Eazy), which in fact only came 5th in its original contest but was always very popular and has solidified that support even more by going on to become a real-world hit single. The 2nd and 3rd placed songs both won their original contests, as did 5th placed 'Sorry' by Meg Myers for Kylienips (which was subject to a 15 point deduction due to Kylienips failing to submit votes, and would otherwise have also tied for 2nd place). A less predictable top 5 finisher, Kishi Bashi's 'I Am The Antichrist To You' also came 5th in its original contest for Singerpurear but managed to go one place better in TBO with 117 points despite not becoming a hit outside the contest at all. The only other original contest winner to come top 10 in TBO was Mulgracia entry 'Fuel To The Fire' by Rationale which came 8th.

On the opposite end of the scoreboard, Danaelanda managed to take 2 songs to the final, but their support apparently hit a brick wall there as they made up both of the bottom 2 in the final results. Pep & Rash's 'Rumors' took the wooden spoon in 30th with just 27 points, while KSHMR's 'Jammu' was 29th with 40 points. What happened? </3

As part of a new policy Persephonian News Bulletin will no longer be publishing our ratings out of 10 for BJSC songs. However, we will still publish our full rankings. You'll just need to be a bit more imaginative :o (this may or may not be because our ratings just become increasingly hyperbolic over time and were slightly embarrassing for TBO).

Here are said rankings for the semi-finals and final, plus our original nominations, for TBO VIII :magic:

Best songs of the year - 20-19

http://i.imgur.com/4DKzrcY.pnghttp://i.imgur.com/Ds4PrnG.png

020 Florina 73 // George Maple - Vacant Space

019 Fljótavík 75 // Space Above - This Is It

Florina's finest moment of the year, apart from when I briefly preferred 'Indian Summer', was the gorgeous and spacey (no pun intended ~) London Grammar-alike 'Vacant Space' by George Maple which surprised me a little by coming top 10 back in BJSC 73, and comes 20th here. I came across this song independently of Florina a bit before this contest and originally wanted to send it myself before checking and discovering George Maple had already been sent in the past. That first entry of hers made no impact but thankfully it was a different story this time around <3 Can't wait to see if Florina deliver anything this good out of their 10 entries in 2016 :cheer: Continuing the space theme both in name and in sound, the highest placed Fljótavík track at #19 is Space Above's 'This Is It', actually described on SoundCloud as 'space tech'. The track builds very well and has some nice vocals in the first half but its placing here is pretty much entirely down to the intense instrumental parts in the second half which I remember instantly falling in love with when Dandy originally sent me the song. So much so that I actually keep forgetting the song even has vocals. Fljótavík can easily be one of the best BJSC countries when they want to be (and based on the bunch of songs they sent me to review for the coming contest, they definitely do want to be right now!!) and this is one of the finest examples of the best side of them, a very unique and gripping~ song which I applaud them for taking the risk in sending. If only it did as well in the final as it did in the semi-final where it surprised me by coming 3rd.

Well done on A-WA smashing so much in TBO  One of my absolute favourites of the year (the exact placing of which shall be revealed... at some point in my lifetime ;))

'This Is It' is amaze also <33 Didn't get it for a while and then suddenly it HIT *.*

'The Wandering Songstress' wanders into Kluminican Republic for BJSC LXXXI

Persephonia are kicking off the new year by further expanding our war on the English language. Prior to 2015 the French-language 'Vehl' by Kidnap Kid was our only entirely non-English entry. We expanded last year with entries in Persian (Sogand's 'The Lom'), Arabic (A-WA's 'Habib Galbi') and Japanese (WEDNESDAY CAMPANELLA's 'Shakushain') and now for the 81st edition of the contest - hosted by debut hosts Kluminican Republic after #00274E passed on their duties - we're going Chinese.

Our BJSC LXXXI entry comes from Chinese-American producer Dave Liang under his alias of The Shanghai Restoration Project. The track, 'The Wandering Songstress', is the closer from his mostly instrumental 2013 album 'Pictures In Motion' which consists of songs inspired by the pre-revolution Chinese film industry. Unlike the rest of the album however, it features vocals (and some rather angelic ones at that ~), from Shanghai native jazz singer Zhang Le. It's essentially an updated (trip-hop ??) version of the song of the same name which featured in the 1937 film 'Street Angel' and originally sung by Zhou Xuan, which I'm told is an extremely well-known song in China. But there aren't many Chinese people in BJSC so I think I can get away with that one.

The Persephonian BJSC Committee elected to take a risk in sending this without sending the track to any other nations to review it first as we usually do, a strategy we hope to keep up most of the year (but maybe not next month ), so if our contest results start getting really poor again, this will be why! We hope the gamble can pay off and at least a few people will like our song enough to vote for it this month anyway :o

The track's official video - featuring footage from 'Street Angel', which is now public domain so don't go taking the video down for copyright pls YouTube - is below. B-)

(2015 EOY will still be completed!!1)

Oh BTW this is our 60th main contest entry and 70th entry including spinoffs. Shall be posting a lil celebratory post for that when I get around to finishing wrangling with Audacity and SoundCloud :o

V heavenly song from the one listen on Dubtrack! A shame I can't help you out in the semi but hopefully there'll be enough fans in there anyway!

Yay at it being your 60th entry (/70th including spinoffs)! Looking forward to hearing the Soundcloud surprise.

The songs, the vocals and the harmony is cheap is fuk but I love it.

Persephonia kick off 2016 with a return to the final

It's a good start to 2016 for Persephonia as we find ourselves back in the BJSC final after missing out in the last contest of 2015. Our ~risk~ paid off and The Shanghai Restoration Project's 'The Wandering Songstress' (feat. Zhang Le) successfully made it through semi-final 1 as announced last night, becoming our 43rd finalist. We now hope it may become our most successful east Asian entry. It doesn't have a high mark to beat, as our only previous east Asian entry came 36th.

Sadly our favourites in semi-final 1 weren't quite as fortunate, as we managed to lose both our 12 pointer (Fljótavík's Arthur Beatrice with 'Who Returned') and our 10 pointer (poor brave Crywolf DNQing again with 'Akureyri', this time representing Quintessa), both missing out by a fairly narrow margin. On a more positive note, the rest of our votes all made it through apart from our 3 pointer, Bignia-Zaragovina entry 'For My Help' by Hayden Calnin which unfortunately but not totally unsurprisingly came last.

Persephonia are back on the bottom of the list for the longest qualification streaks but Hushkanukia maintain their #1 spot with a 10th straight qualifier (although #00274E, aided by their autoqualifier for this contest, have had 13 consecutive entries in the final, just not all in consecutive contests).

Persephonian News Bulletin will be posting their usual summary of the last contest soonish (and maybe more EOY posts might be posted ) but Adam's bumpage of the Sandebörg thread has just reminded me I didn't get around to posting this yet.

PER70A

In celebration of 70 entries to the BuzzJack Song Contest - 60 to the main contest plus 10 exclusive to spinoffs - the Persephonian BJSC Committee has commissioned the creation of 7 mini medleys of Persephonian BJSC entries, so you can all remind yourself of not only how great all of our entries are, but also how super diverse they are, because they have been split into groups roughly based on their genre / overall sound. Okay it's a little vague at times. But I thought it's best to split it up a bit rather than have a SoundCloud recap of 70 different songs.

On offer below:

~ some hip hop and R&B jams to bump in the whip

~ some kool and kredible indie, le reel muzak

~ some of the alternative electronic stuff that people insisted on also calling 'indie' a while back

~ some songs that we hope even the most hoeish of nations might agree with us are POP, though really all our entries are xx

~ some ~sick beats~ and ~sumptuous bopage~ :music:

~ some more chilled out stuff... if your dreams being haunted by mildly disturbing Icelandic jazz women is your idea of being chilled out I guess

~ the other 10 songs which I didn't pick to go into any of the above categories, mostly more electronic stuff because that's mostly what I do lol

Enjoy B-)

(Note: I had to sliiightly speed up the first song in a few of these to get SoundCloud to stop flagging them for copyright, I don't think it's noticeable except for a very small bit of distortion in the last one)

Well if that isn't going to steal mah thunder, MEDLEYS!

I shall get round to listening soon x

THAT ONE SONG FROM PITCH PERFECT THAT PLAYS WHEN BECA ENTERS THE RADIO STATION THE FIRST TIME.

I think I like the Bangerz the most.

THAT ONE SONG FROM PITCH PERFECT THAT PLAYS WHEN BECA ENTERS THE RADIO STATION THE FIRST TIME.

Was gonna ask what this was but it was pretty easy to find on Google from other people wondering what that song was :') Who knew Wild Belle had such impact x

These were so lovely to listen to, definitely a reason why your my top pointed country  Bangerz and Pop (commercial hoe I am) are probably my faves, but definitely Chillout too, some of your most underrated entries in there </3 (and Orphic ofc. ;o)

Looking forward to the rest of your EOY ^_^ (not gonna give up with the nagging yet)
