The instrumental would be a subpar album track, I can't decide whether the drunk ramblings on top make it better or awful.

I don't get why it's got such a negative reception, it's not a hit single by any means and they did right switching it but it's SO much better than 'Applause'.

It is in no way better than Applause.

Let's not run around deluding ouselves. It's cheesy, 80s-rip off, nonsensical noise.

It's miles better than 'Applause' (IMHO of course, of course)

Also if you are slagging it off at least get your facts right. It's more 70s than anything; channeling Bowie, Abba and Boney M...

Well the public took to Applause in a small way, let's see if they do the same with this!

Currently no. 171 after an X Factor performance.

You know everyone has different opinions? You don't need to sledgehammer your views onto people.

The iTunes chart is no barometer of what is or is not quality music. Everyone is different and opinions are subjective.

Enforcing your view so laboriously and repetitively isn't going to make you right...because there is no right or wrong.

I didn't know what the lesser of two evils was; calling him a dick or throwing a lot of cliches out there. I'm still unsure.

This song is absolutely terminal. And I can't think of any other Gaga songs (outside of the early I Like It Rough type songs that all sounded like demos even on the final album) I'd say that about. It has character in bags but it's just an awful, awful pop song. The verses and middle eight are enjoyable in a trashy camp way but laughable by the stellar pop standards Gaga normally meets, the chorus is underwhelming as hell, the 'take me to your planet' bridge is just lazy, and the only bit which redeems the rest and sounds like it's actually from a Gaga song I'd enjoy is the 'goddess of love' bit of the bridge.

Is it too much to ask for a song which pushes pop boundaries and brings a decent hook along for the ride without sounding like a freak show? Heaven knows she's managed it enough times before, and it's what she really needs right now if she isn't going to alienate everyone outside of the core fanbase which will buy anything she puts out.

Exactly this!

The song is so laughably bad that it will have damaged her credibility. I can't express jst how shockingly awful it is, especially for a star of her calibre. This is like first demo from the bedroom of a teenager bad.

I'm just being agood fan. God knows she doesn't need any more yes men.

I feel like just about EVERYTHING I wanted to say is in Tirren's post there, spot on imo. I don't ENTIRELY hate it, because it's so absolutely bizarre and that first verse is just so bad that it's good. But it all just feels so cheap and tinny in production to me, certainly not what I expect from a mega star.

I understand that last sentence is kinda what she's going for, while my favourite Katy Perry is churning out the 'expected', Gaga is the opposite. But I still think there's a way of doing something out of the box whilst still maintaining a strong sound with it. 'Bad Romance', whilst still being a pop song, definitely has a Gaga sound stamped. 'Judas' does too, in my opinion and gets way too much hate. This... it's different, it's Gaga but fundamentally, it's not good. Having said that... it's more interesting than 'Do What U Want' for me, kinda for the reason that Jake said, 'Do What U Want' is pretty faceless for such a stand out artist.

Sharon v. GaGa? :S

And YES! Thank god for that.

Keep Venus out of public knowledge.

2 sensible decisions in a row for the Gagz! Guess she wants to remain a big star after all.

My God. Talk about being a drama queen.

I'm still absolutely LOVING the song. Miles better than Applause indeed. (Do What U Want being even worse than Applause too yep)

I think everyone GOT that you absolutely HATE it. There's nothing more you can do here. Please move on.

And OH LOOK it's #2 in the iTunes chart. What a f***ing flop. I guess the general public REALLY DO HATE THE SONG

Fully agreed with Tirren. Nothing to add really. I think she needs some guidance at the songwriting stage because her uptempos are becoming ever more ugly on the ear. I'm now starting to make peace with the fact that this record won't even come close to Born This Way.

And Applause is an absolutely stellar pop song which sounds as though it was written by somebody who actually gets how a song shod hang together. Venus is an icy cold mess.

Whatever you think about Gaga, you can't deny that she is one of the most noticeable and essential popstars of our generation. Other artists such as Katy Perry cannot create anywhere near as much discussion as she can.

I still think the chorus is a total anti-climax, weak as piss.

HELP! This is vastly growing on me!

THANK YOU.

Depends what you want from a pop star. Katy is probably the best current example of the "old style" of putting out reliably good singles and average albums, doing good promo, not alienating her audience etc etc. GaGa (has capitalising the second G stopped being a thing now?) wants things done her way and still has the fanbase to pull it off but if she carries on down the same road she might not be a "pop star" for much longer.

Rihanna could soon be a brilliant example of trying to go between the two approaches and it going spectacularly wrong. I hope.
