The haunting atmosphere, the build, the climax, slight gothic overtones. Never quite trendy enough for the music press, she was onto a commercial winner with this, which I assume is her best selling solo single - it's either this or No More I Love Yous. The fact that it wasn't on Diva helped it sell too. A note about REM - while they continued to release good singles off Automatic for the People, they'd never quite reach the heights of Losing My Religion or Near Wild Heaven. (maybe just once. Much later on) Top 3s 14/02/1993 1 - Love Song for a Vampire - Annie Lennox 2 - Sweet Harmony - The Beloved 3 - Ordinary World - Duran Duran 21/02/1993 1 - Love Song for a Vampire - Annie Lennox 2 - Constant Craving - kd Lang 3 - Sweet Harmony - The Beloved 28/02/1993 1 - Love Song for a Vampire - Annie Lennox 2 - Constant Craving - kd Lang 3 - Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight - REM

December 2, 201311 yr Author i7mEB2wnDLQ 07/03/1993 Suede - Animal Nitrate 6 Weeks I remember someone famous - I think it may have been Jo Wiley or someone like that - who said they remember the feeling they had when they placed this on the turn-table or into the cd player for the first time that they knew they were listening to history unfolding. It is a touch over-stated but imagine hearing this after the anticipation that had been created by The Drowners and Metal Mickey. It's intoxicating and almost too much to take in sometimes. The same words that have surrounded early Suede apply here - sleeze, rough gay sex and drugs references. The chorus grates a bit after all this time but everything else about it burns as miraculously as it did 20 years ago. The intro (Butler loved intros) is ominous, the guitar slashes in the verse lacerate the song like a freshly open wound. The solo unashamedly flanged to create the chemical-haze fueled atmosphere of the backdrop to all this seediness. When I think of indie music this is the song I think of - as inaccurate as that may sound. Therapy?'s outstanding Screamager would be overshadowed for three weeks and Bowie's Jump, They Say was no sloucher either. Creating possibly the best Top 3 of the year. December 2, 201311 yr Love "Animal Nitrate". Was that Annie Lennox a double A-side? I remember "Little Bird" getting loads of airplay and was the version Bruno Brookes played on the UK Top 40. It entered at #3 behind another new entry at #2 - Take That! Very rare at the time and a sign of things to come from 1995 onwards of course!

In usual circumstances it would have managed more than one week at number 1. I love it to bits - right from the unusually dark intro to the female backing vocals. I can't normally abide Duran Duran. Ooooh....that outro. Top 3 18/04/1993 1 - Come Undone - Duran Duran 2 - Animal Nitrate - Suede 3 - You Got Me Thinking - The Beloved

It's a lot less dancy than normal, but appropriately pessimistic for a single from their downbeat sixth album - Republic. It was my first New Order album and so it didn't have the burden of measuring up to Technique. I loved it. Spending five weeks in the Top 3 (one under Come Undone and four under Regret) but never making the top spot is You've Got Me Thinking from the Beloved. A quiet, summery song feeling almost effortless. A sleeper hit of the year over shaddowed by the big hitters. Strangely, they started to sound American on this album and a lot more funky. From Despair to Where is nicely muscular and concise - how I'd love to have been a fan when this came out. The lyrics - as usual - deal with the various demons that Richie had. Took me totally by surprise as I was expecting Yothu Yindi to play but they cancelled. I was sat there beer in hand chatting and didn't hear the soft intro but when the whole band (except Richey obviously) kicked in I recognised them straight away and charged down the front. Best first listen to a Manics track ever! I'll never forget that.
December 4, 201311 yr Author Has anyone noticed there's been far fewer dance number 1s in 1993 than any of the first three years?
December 7, 201311 yr I know people mock 1992's charts as having no clear sense of direction and 'only 12 number ones' all year - but it is one of my favourite years, especially for dance. You've got: Future Sound of London "Papua New Guinea" Gat Decor "Passion" Opus III "It's A Fine Day" Orbital "Halcyon" The Prodigy "Out Of Space" SL2 "On A Ragga Tip" Utah Saints "Something Good" and that's just the first half of '92. For me, 1992 is THE YEAR. I was 8, starting listening to the UK top 40 RELIGIOUSLY and would be devastated if I missed it!!! 1992 is considered a piss poor year for music but for me it;s one of the best, having no major theme meant the gates were wide open for virtually anything to be a hit. I mean, Jimmy Nail? That aside, dance music was of course massive and I believe it shaped my taste in music for good, I LOVE dance music so there you go. By the way I'm enjoying this run down, I like a lot of these and of course the dance tracks.
December 7, 201311 yr Author But it did have a major theme - Dance music was in the Top 5 most of the time.

Damon's vocals were possibly the wrong side of annoying but they're just passable for me. But the harmonies and guitar-work from Graham makes it refreshing. December 7, 201311 yr Author YdFmsURncFg 08/08/1993 The Waterboys - Glastonbury Song 2 Weeks This is a sprightly little song, arriving in late Summer 1993 and I just loved it. I bought it too and I didn't really buy much back then. It has a strange optimism and a weird Crowded House-like air about it. It was quite a guitar-filled Summer - nary a pop or dance song to be seen in the Top 3 for July, August and a few weeks in Sept. This reflects both a change in what was selling and a change in my tastes too. For the rest of the decade it would be mostly alternative music but dance still makes a regular return. December 7, 201311 yr Oh three stupendous tracks in a row! Cannonball is one of the all-time great singles, possibly outshining nearly every Pixies track. And that era of The Waterboys seems to have been completely forgotten. I loved the whole of the Dream Harder album. An absolute gem.
