With One Direction looking pretty certain to re-peak this week with Story of My Life, can anyone think of any other pre-album singles by a boyband to have done this? I can't think of any recent examples and would be intrigued to see the last time it happened.

I stress pre-album cause post-album singles are a different story and hardly *any* enter at their peak. :P

One Direction are RE-PEAKING this week? Wow.

I wonder if/how many more sales it'll sell compared to its first week.

Speaking of 1D, One Thing peaked after the single was released.

Same scenario with Eyes Wide Shut.

Neither are pre-album. :P

OH. Silly me.
Neither are pre-album. :P

The thing is post-album singles normally peak on their official release week due to having multiple formats and versions.

His point was that even with all those formats and versions, both 1D e JLS singles didn't peak on their release week, but in the following weeks (I'm not sure when they peaked, though).

One Thing most certainly did peak on its release weak, it only got to #9 due to physicals. Not sure about JLS so that could count I guess.

Take That's 'Patience' entered at #4 and climbed to #1 in its second week. This is the only example I can find in my chart database (but it's not an easily searchable request so that's just based on thinking of some boybands and checking if they have any appropriate songs :P)

Boyzone's 'Gave It All Away' came very close to doing this and in a similar style to 1D - that entered at #9 and dropped down before climbing back to #10 in its fourth week.

Patience doesn't really count though surely as that was released in the era where downloads weren't as popular but counted the week before physical release, pretty much every song entered and then climbed the week after.

In 2006, over 68% of Top 75 entries peaked on their first week on chart, higher than 2007, 08 & 09.

Both One Thing and Eyes Wide Shut peaked on their release week. I remember for Eyes Wide Shut since it had the Tinie Tempah remix out on release week.

JLS featuring Tinie Tempah - Eyes Wide Shut - (16 Weeks) 22/01/2011 -10-10-12-17-17-{8}-11-17-26-28-33-47-56-53-64-73

One Direction - One Thing - (12 Weeks) 28/01/2012 -28-36-38-26-{9}-24-42-55-65-69-x(1)-61-72

Yes, that week One Thing got to #9 was when the physical was out, and I assume it's the same for JLS too with Eyes Wide Shut. Still though, I doubt it would have climbed had it been a held-back pre-album release.

I know you're asking for recent examples, but before 1995 pretty much every boyband song :P Boyzone's 'Love Me For A Reason' took five weeks to climb to #2 and the album didn't come out until the following year.

I imagine that's because a lot of the smaller hits didn't sell enough on download to chart first week out. I bet most big hits peaked in second week.

McFly - Lies went from #23 to #4 in 2008.

That was post-album, going by what Wiki's saying. Any pre-album examples guys???

No McFly was pre-album: a version of the album had been given away with a newspaper, but 'Lies' wasn't on it; it was then released as a single to promote the paid-for re-release of the album.

Yep, that is how I remember it.

Although the reason it charted at #23 first was that it was download only until the following week. Of course physical sales were still strong for them back then. They were 7 copies behind the Pussycat Dolls at #3 too!!

Boyband singles are just the sort of thing that will always be super frontloaded due to the nature of the loyal fanbases having to have new product the moment it's available. Pre-album boyband singles have always been promoted with the idea of getting the best first week sale/peak possible because they know that in general a plummet the following week is inevitable, short of a song catching the public's attention beyond the stans and staying at #1 or wherever for longer (Patience, You Raise Me Up, Glad You Came etc...).

I can't think of any examples whatsoever of a lead/pre-album boyband single climbing to its peak from after 1994/1995 (excluding the ones in 2006/7 because of the weird chart rules) and the likes of Boyzone, All-4-One and Let Loose. So kudos to One Direction for getting one, Story Of My Life has achieved a very rare feat for a boyband single of winning over casual music buyers over time!
