#9 this week ~ Swiss music producer Cyril Hahn makes his Top 10 debut with "Perfect Form".

 

"Hemiplegia" is knocked from the top by possibly the longest song to ever chart at #1 from one of the oldest artists to hit #1; "Love Is Lost" (Hello Steve Reich Mix by James Murphy for the DFA) clocks in at 10:25 and is the eighteenth song to go to #1 in 2013. "Love Is Lost" follows "No Love" (Hooray For Earth in 2012), "Not In Love" (Crystal Castles and Robert Smith in 2010), and "Cosmic Love" (Florence + The Machine also in 2010) to become the fourth single with love in the title to hit #1 this decade. Incidentally 2007 currently holds the record for least #1s in a calendar year with 19. On his 66th birthday, David Bowie shocked the world by releasing his first new material for more than 10 years - the album provided 2 Top 10 hits earlier this year ("Where Are We Now?" #9 in February, and "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)" #7 in April) and with "Love Is Lost" finding its way to #1 (thanks to a little help from former LCD Soundsystem front-man James Murphy) it makes his 3rd T10 of the year and rounds the year out nicely by providing him with his first, long overdue #1 on the chart.

 

Bowie's residency at the top spot may be short-lived however because already snapping at his heals are Glaswegians CHVRCHES (up two places to No. 2 with "Lies"); the group debuted late last year with the wonderful "The Mother We Share", which went to #9 in November, and was followed by further hits "Recover" (#14) and "Gun" (a 4 week chart-topper from July). "Lies", the obvious hit from the album The Bones of What You Believe was released on 12" vinyl today (Monday 2 December) and is likely to run "Love Is Lost" close for #1 in the coming weeks leading up to Christmas and the all-important Christmas Number One. Also hoping to achieve their 2nd #1 next week are Bombay Bicycle Club and the excellent first taste of their forthcoming fourth LP - "Carry Me" which is released physically on 23rd December and jumps from 6-4 this week. BBC previously hit #1 in August 2011 for 3 weeks with "Shuffle".

 

There are 7 new entries to the chart, but none of them are in any way festive. :( At 42 there is a new track from Health, who have licensed "High Pressure Dave" to GTA V where it sits on Radio Mirror Park (my favourite radio station on GTA V btw). Australian newcomer RY X is at 47 with "Berlin" which has the perfect atmosphere for December listening. Gesaffelstein get the highest entry at 30 with the bizarre but addictive "Hate Or Glory?" and there is a 2013 after-party starting at 38 with hitmakers Disclosure and Nile Rodgers teaming up with Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes - the short but sweet "Together" is also brand this week. There are also returns to the chart for The Flaming Lips ("Peace Sword (Open Your Heart)" at 41), and chart debuts for Boxed In ("All Your Love Is Gone" at 44) and IYES ("'Til Infinity" at 40).
