December 4, 201311 yr Author I've always regarded it as one, both because of the time of year it was released, and because of the nativity-themed (if only ironically) video. Also, though others may disagree with me on this, I recall it being marketed as an Xmas song at the time.
December 4, 201311 yr I'd say yes - it gets airplay and iTunes boost at christmas so it's a xmas song even though the lyrics have nothing to do with it. Same with 'Stay Another Day' they both sound christmassy
December 4, 201311 yr Stay Another Day does have bells in it though - so I consider it more a Christmas song than The Power Of Love (I could never understand why this was on Christmas compilations)
December 4, 201311 yr No, the song itself isn't anything to do with Christmas, whether the video is or not. I'd say it just has an Xmas feel to it, and that doesn't make it an Xmas song.
December 4, 201311 yr http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/70/Power_of_love_single.jpg/220px-Power_of_love_single.jpg No. I think they wanted it to be perceived as one though as the video pictures a nativity scene and the cover of the sleeve screams "Christmas" to me.
December 4, 201311 yr I always classify it as a Xmas track its the only time of the year the track is actually released.
December 4, 201311 yr Despite the video, the original release date and the wintery feel, I don't think it's a Christmas song. I don't think a dance remix of a Christmas song could hit the top 10 in summertime, like TPOL did in 2000.
December 4, 201311 yr Its like the John Lewis ads now they are aimed at the xmas market and so for me they are xmas songs - why else would they sell so much each year and get so much radio plays in december whether they have xmas lyrics like Cliff Richard/Slade/mariah is irrelevant they are part of britains cultural fabric 30 years later!
They'd sell so much each year because they're shown on TV constantly as part of the John Lewis ads. I wouldn't say Somewhere Only We Know by Lily is an Xmas song at all so I don't see why The Power of Love would be?
December 4, 201311 yr But Gabrielle Aplins one from last year is selling this yr amongst all the other xmas songs & Lily's may be the same next yr even when the ad isnt being shown. Gab one is on the Now xmas album this year too! Edited December 4, 201311 yr by steve201
December 4, 201311 yr That inclusion on the Now! Xmas album is questionable anyway IMO. It's selling well again now cause it's being played as part of Christmas song shows on music channels, etc. and I don't agree because to me at least it's not an Xmas song seeing as it's not about Xmas...
December 4, 201311 yr Suppose its down to personal opinion - it goes back on my ipod each december anyway!
December 4, 201311 yr No it's not a Christmas song, but people inevitably associate it with Christmas.
December 5, 201311 yr It was a Christmas time hit yes but a Christmas song - no. Whilst the video may be based on the Christian story of the birth of Christ history knows, given the words of the Bible itself (among other texts), that Jesus' birth happened almost certainly in springtime. Meaning it is only about Christmas if you buy into Christianity's version of events. The 25th of December was chosen specifically to eradicate the Pagan festivals of Yule, Saturnalia et al which were widely celebrated at the time. Incidentally since Herod The Great is known to have died in 4 BC then whole nativity story is, at best, wildly inaccurate
December 5, 201311 yr I don't consider it to be a Christmas song but I now associate it with Christmas, if that makes sense. :P Just like ABBA's 'Chiquitita' and East 17's 'Stay Another Day' which are both Christmassy but aren't actually Christmas songs.
December 5, 201311 yr This subject has much to do with the UK charts. Surely songs can evolve into Christmas songs over time maybe whether they were intended to be or not? I don't know.
