Technically Canberra overstepped the mark (The Australian Capital Territory bit) and legislated in a way that meant it was ridiculously easy to get shot down because of the 2004 Marriage act (Thanks LNP).

As it stands, in WA the Green party have introduced legislation that can get round the DOMA echoing LNP Marriage act thing and Brisbane's Courier Mail's coverage of this was fair, balanced and not against equality so all hope is not lost.

(The reason I mention The Courier Mail is because they have a reputation. They are so right wing they make Fox News and the Daily Mail look like socialists. Mainly for this:

The Courier Mail is often used by News Corp Australia to publish news that might be considered controversial in the limited Queensland market, where the Courier Mail holds a virtual monopoly on printed news, before running the same story in broadsheet media nationally against which it may be criticized by rival publications. It is common in government and political circles to discuss if any decision would pass the "Courier-Mail Test", meaning that if the results of the action were to go public, and all the positive aspects removed, how would any potential negative aspects be scandalised by the Courier Mail and thus what risks need to be mitigated early.

Yes that's from Wiki but having bought many editions of that paper I can confirm it to be wholly true).

Labor allowed a free vote on the matter but LNP refuse to, forcing everyone to stick with dickface's views. Hopefully in 3 years time when they are booted out of Canberra for a Labor majority a same sex marriage bill will actually pass Federal Parliament. Although it'd probably epic fail the Courier Mail test...
