Posted January 3, 201411 yr This thread is to look at the first week on the chart of each years best selling song. First the year then the song with its first weeks sales (if available, will be difficult as we do the early noughties and earlier, when we do these look at the first weeks chart position and any other information) Then the Full Top 40 of the week in question and look at all the information and determine at week 1 is the song showing indications that it will become the years best seller. It will all become clear as we go on, and also look at some of the other songs in that chart that week as a retro. Start at 2013 and count backwards. 2013, BLURRED LINES (Robin Thicke feat T.I. & Pharrell). 190,572 First Week Sales. Looking good to start with a straight in at #1 and a big sale in the first week, so indications are from the first week that this is looking to become one of the years biggest sellers. January 3, 201411 yr Author 2011, SOMEONE LIKE YOU (Adele). 9168 First Week Sales. January 3, 201411 yr Author 2010, LOVE THE WAY YOU LIE (Eminem feat Rihanna). 39,009 First Week Sales. Looking a bit better this one 40k sales some songs have hit #1 with that and a #7 entry in the first week, as looking to become the best seller of the year, maybe as this chart happened in the start of the second half of the year, it has a good 6 months to sell well enough to be one on the biggest sellers, at the time the current biggest seller of the year so far was Helping Haiti - Everybody Hurts already on 619,300 so Eminem had quite a distance to go to over take this. January 3, 201411 yr Someone Like You may have charted "low" on its first week, but its first week sales were actually impressive, since it was from album cherrypicks (also the case with Love the Way You Lie and Poker Face), and it's not like the song was a big collaboration. Its only promotion prior to that was a live performance she did of it on TV late 2010, so it was impressive that some people waited so many weeks to download the song, based off that one performance (and of course the next performance shot it to #1). I thought that was a promising start for the song, personally. Somebody That I Used to Know I think was actually available quite a while before it started charting? If so, its first week sales would have really been a lot lower. However, by the time it started charting I knew the song would be big, since it had been in a lot of other countries by then (and it's insanely catchy). Love the Way You Lie was an interesting one. Again, it was cherrypicks like with Someone Like You, It was extremely impressive for it to debut in the top 10 as an album track. Other songs that could've posed major competition like Only Girl and Just the Way You Are came too late in the year. Matt Cardle ALMOST managed to get the year-end #1 actually. One week the OCC reported incorrect sales figures, had those sales figures been correct, Matt Cardle would've got the #1, so I was very relieved when I found out they were wrong! OMG by Usher was another huge seller, it was actually the YTD #2 late in the year (which I found strange, since the song didn't seem THAT big). Poker Face debuted quite "low" as well, but the song had done really well in the charts in some other places back in 2008 (Canada, Australia I think?), and Just Dance was doing very well at the time. Also Lady Gaga had a massive promotional campaign behind her, and the song was very safe and used the exact identical formula to Just Dance (and multiple other hits from 2007/2008), so it was an obvious chart hit. I Gotta Feeling made much more of an impact a few months later, but it was too late in the year unfortunately. Edited January 3, 201411 yr by Eric_Blob
January 3, 201411 yr La Roux In for the Kill is a good example even though it didn't become the years biggest seller!
January 3, 201411 yr Sorry to nitpick, would it best to highlight or bold the track in the chart. You could identify the track a lot quicker.

January 3, 201411 yr Great idea for a thread. I remember that Adele song entering the chart at the time and hoping that it would be a hit one day.
January 4, 201411 yr Author Back on to it now, here is 2009 to 2000 2009 POKER FACE (Lady Gaga) 8,577 First Week Sales. This is another one that started off very slowly, an enter at #30 & less than 9k sales. Although in this chart she was #1 with her debut, this was the second hit, at this stage she has crashed the one Top 40 hit wonder hurdle. Time was on the side as this chart was January and the rest of the year was there to improve sales more, but this could be said as half & half in predicting this as being one of the best sellers of the year. This ended up narrowly beating The Black Eyed Peas for the #1 of the year.
