Is it not possible to merge this thread with the other two threads instead of closing them, so that this thread covers all the discussion? Just an idea ^_^

Done!

It's not a bad idea smiffj, it's just not necessary to open a million threads about it.

This is much better by clumping everything together or else the chart forum is going to get rather messy.

Going back to 2006, Meck's 'Thunder In My Heart' seemed like just yet another looped-house hit to go top 10 like all the others. To get #1 and stay there for two weeks seemed very bizarre, what did it have that, say, Hi-Tack's 'Say Say Say' or Beatfreakz 'Somebody's Watching Me' didn't?

At the time I'd always listen to Dave Pearce's Dance Anthems on Radio 1 on Sunday nights, all that summer they were playing some weird minimal techno tune that seemed like some obscure club track that would never get an official release in a million years. It did, it was Fedde Le Grande's 'Put Your Hands Up 4 Detroit' and amazingly hit the top spot. Same went for Bodyrox's 'Yeah Yeah' and Mason's 'Exceeder' which capitalised on the brief electro craze of 2006-7 by going top 3.

Promises and Swagger Jagger were both quite surprising! I can't believe I actually liked the latter when it came out!
Arctic Monkeys was a pleasent surprise at No.1 with "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" back in 2005. I also remember Nizlopi's "JCB Song" from that year.
'Swagger Jagger' wasn't surprising, I remember at the time it was seen as an obvious #1 - what was surprising was how badly it did afterwards as people were predicting it to be massive, when in reality it only sold about 200k in total.

I guess it was surprising because it was such a marmite song!

I've not seen a number 1 more surprising than Welcome To The Black Parade during the time I've listened to charts, I'm sure there was some before then, but that instantly comes to mind when I think of this. Amazing song though.
